Um Candyman, you are offered free travel jobs because YOU’RE EXTREMELY HANDSOME & talented. A true clone of the Aussie actor Eric Bana and I really think we could all hear you better if you filmed without a shirt on. Just saying.

7 years ago when I bought my house in AZ, all I had was a Milwaukee M18 drill. Most of my tools had been stolen. I went to a couple liquidators for some basics. One of my first priorities was my front yard. As it progressed, neighbors asked if I could do some work on their property. I didn't have a car at the time, so I actually packed up a backpack, rode my bike, and started doing irrigation repair. Eventually I got a big enough job and bought a '96 F150...which lasted me about 4 months. But that was enough time to save and I found a '05 Ram 1500 which runs like a beast.
Now I have countless regular clients, mostly acquired off of NextDoor and referrals. More work than I know what to do with and more tools than I need now lol. I used to play a game called "I need one of those." Example: my sissoo tree decided to run a main root under my center concrete pathway tilting 80% up. I wanted to create those trendy large concrete paver walkways. Huh...if I had a concrete saw, I could just make them out of that sidewalk. For the next week I responded to every post by someone looking to have a patio cut for plumbing, or someone needing a doorway cut in their block wall. I got three jobs, collected deposits, ordered a concrete saw on Amazon which came in two days, and earned over $1500 in 4 days. I then proceeded to cut up my sidewalk and make a trendy modern pathway. It's also the method I used to get my auger, paint sprayer, welder, trailer, sds, and one of my favorites, my jackhammer haha.
Thanks for your videos man. We're not all drunken misfits. Maybe just ADHD handyman freaks who can't sit still.

Thank you so much. I went from working on cars for a living and hated it(great hobby sucky job) and wanted a change. I switched over to construction and it was okay but I don't like working for someone else that doesn't know the things I know. I took the dive into becoming a handyman and now I'm starting my own legitimate business off of it. I went from 1000$ a week paychecks to now I have 50000$ in work that's waiting on me to complete and I couldn't be happier with this new found income and freedom. Your channel inspired me to take the plunge.

Love your videos. I was married to a Handyman for ten years and even worked on jobs with him building decks, hanging siding, installing flooring, doing all kinds of things and loving every minute. He was a lot like you, very good at almost everything. He got into some really high end jobs and was even building a large house on a lake close by. I don't think he charged enough for his work and he got in over his head because he bought new trucks, expensive equipment and tools and ended up declaring bankruptcy. He would have been much better off and happier doing handyman work. He is currently a construction superintendent but he isn't very happy.
We used to go to all the tool shows and I accumulated quite a few of my own tools, plus I have a great collection of antique tools I inherited from my grandfather and great uncle. I also do a lot of woodworking and decorative painting and cut out my own pieces on my DeWalt scroll saw.
I really have enjoyed watching your videos. I'm learning things just watching you!

I am not who you make these videos for, a 65 yr old female. I really enjoy watching what you do. I just had my house remodeled. My contractor was very good but I don’t think all of his workers were so skilled as he was. But I was thrilled to get someone as trustworthy and knowledgeable as he was. You are right, a good handyman is very difficult to find. I live in southern Indiana. Thank you for these videos!

Semi retired and will be looking for something trade related "ish" in the spring of 2019. Going to decompress from cube life then get into habitat for humanity and start serious looking at handyman in MN. Would LOVE to work with another handyman for a while just to get thcee overhead part down before striking out and your videos really are filling the gap!

It was evident I was mechanically inclined at the age of almost 3, and it grew from there; but my family was broken, so I didn't get a lot of good opportunities to develop my talents. I'm a good 10 years behind my peers in life, in general, but after losing a job of 16 years due to the pandemic, I'm finding freedom, meaning, and personal growth in a budding handyman business. I seem to find polarized views on handymen that pretty much align with what you're saying: I feel either politely patronized or quietly dismissed as a less-than person, or I'm genuinely and thoroughly appreciated for my knowledge, honesty, and trustworthiness, and get a lot of repeat business. I started watching your videos in my late 30's as part of research into certain repairs for my own curiosity, and now that I'm 41 and trying to make it as a handyman, they've become more relevant than ever. Thanks for doing what you do!

As a fellow handyman, i really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work. Speaking of working out of cars... The transmission went out in my van, so i'm currently working out of a Lincoln Town Car. Fortunately, i don't drink or do drugs and have a very loyal customer base, so although a bit of a pain when i need to haul my table saw or tile saw, it's working for me.

I consider myself a tradesman, I’m a certified machinist, & welder but do paint and bodywork for a living, and my own home remodeling. Just building or fixing things comes natural from my upbringing. We just always fixed our own stuff. I do my own plumbing, electrical, drywall, design and building. I just like to pick up tips and tricks from guys like you to make it easier for me.

I started out with a 2004 Saturn Vue with a 5x10 flatbed trailer as my "pickup truck". I did/do fix and rents. We bought our 24th property two weeks ago. Still have 21 of them, sold the others for capital. Last year upgraded to a full size pick up with a short bed and a 6 x 12 enclosed trailer. Got the short bed for just the reason you mentioned, maneuverability. I don't work for other folks just maintenance on our properties and remodel/rehabs. Enjoy your videos, always looking to learn something new.

Great channel, always look forward to your videos. I pulled the plug 10 years ago after 38 years in corporate world as a Facilities Manager. At 64 my only regret is that i didn't do it sooner. General contractor license is required to be a handyman in California. Without license, all you can do is max $500 (incl material) jobs. On the other hand, it's great to be an owner-builder in California - you can pull all the permits and do virtually anything as long as it's your own property and you know the code.

Sorry for the comment two years later but, there’s a middle age women that lives across from my family and she lives alone. This young lady is more competent than just about any handyman in our state probably. About a year ago she asked me to come check her bathroom out because she knew I was I handyman, I was blown away. I walked into the bathroom and it was immaculate so I asked “what am I looking at?” She replied “the whole thing, it’s been about a month but I’m almost done”
I couldn’t find anything wrong in the bathroom, I checked the plumbing, electrical, the finish work, paint, you name it. Perfection. She showed me the before pictures and we talked for about an hour about the renovation. Before I left I told her I would have charged about $8,000 to do that job, plus material.
If you own a house, these skills can save you BIG time, plus the pride of a self maintained and improved house.

I have almost the same laptop; just about two years older. I bought a gaming one too because it was powerful and the price was right; I don't game either.
For safety glasses you should check out Native Eyewear. They're not advertised as safety glasses, but they're made out of the same polycarbonate material. They're kinda pricey, but they come with a lifetime warranty. If anything happens to them and they break, you send them in and for $30 they'll send you a new pair. I've got the Dash SS. They look cool, the lenses are polarized, and they have vent holes in the top to keep them from fogging up. I've had them for about ten years now and only ever broke a pair once when a drill got away from me, kicked up and hit me in the face. The frames broke, not the lenses. Oh, and the lenses are replaceable; every other year or so I buy some new lenses because the other ones eventually get scratched up.

Here's an argument for doing a fix and rent: you'd have months and months of channel content. Just set up the camera(s) and narrate. You'd cover most (all?) major systems, carpentry, finishes, the works. Include the follow-on interaction with realtors (if used to get tennents). Explore the whole industry from the standpoint of one renovation.

After Katrina flooded out the first floor of our home I had to try and find contractors to make the repairs. Of course 75,000 other people in New Orleans were doing the same thing. I guess word got out there was easy money to me made in the Big Easy. I met with dozens of alleged contractors and hired several and also had to fire a few.
Your comments reminded be of one guy who showed up at the house one day who billed himself as a finish carpenter. I would always look closely at the work truck and any tools. Many showed up with mostly brand new tools. But I digress, this alleged finish carpenter's pickup bed was filled up mostly with very old and worn tools. Amongst the tools was a smattering of maybe 100 empty beer cans. I had to chuckle when you mentioned a pickup bed full of beer cans.
BTW I didn't hire the can guy and I didn't hire the guys with brand new tools.

Great video . How are you able to do electrical, plumbing and door installation being a handyman. I just started my business in FL but there are a lot of limitations to the handyman business because I am not a contractor. Any advice will be appreciated.

I went to college, I'm not a drunk nor anything else people categorize a handyman. I love the career of handyman due to the challenge of the work, I am not cut out to just sit in a cubicle. I'm also in Southern California and one of the challenge of a handyman here in my perspective is pricing. People always want exceptional work for very little pay.

I read up on salesmanship and selling. I watching a ton of seminars and read a lot of books. I was able to double my income just by selling my work at a higher price. I was only making around $6k a month and I couldn't do anymore work. The only way to make more money was to get more money for the same amount of work. I almost gave up and went back to the office. I'm glade I didn't.

I'm in Northern California and I'm a Handyman -- not because I can't get a job, but by choice. Out of high school, I went to cosmetology school and worked as a hairdresser for 6 years before joining the Air Force. There I studied Aerospace Ground Equipment Mechanics. When I left the Air Force I worked for the U.S. Government as an online learning programmer. After 20 years of sitting at desk, I started hating being trapped inside being under-appreciated, having a manager critique my performance while knowing nothing about what I did, I wanted to return to using my hands and being more active.

Do a live stream! You can't use the GoPro. Will need to use a webcam or your phone. You can use TH-cam live or Twitch. TH-cam live is the easiest.

I think I've got it narrowed. You're somewhere in at least a Northern state given how cold it gets. You're in a metro area or very close. You also have relaxed laws concerning the handyman. We don't have that here. Everything is VERY restrictive. So there's multiple answers, but it has been narrowed down.

I really like and appreciate your videos. Thank you. I'd like to eventually start a handyman business. I have no construction knowledge/experience. What route would you suggest taking with the end goal being a handyman/remodeling business? Jump right in and learn as I go? Pick up experience in a trade first? If so, what trade would you suggest and why?

    • @TheHandyman1
      @TheHandyman1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I would work for a few different remodeling companies After about 6 years you should be able to go out on your own. I think the HVAC trade its good. Its the easiest to get into. Electrical and plumping are easy to learn on your own.

Is fix and flip bad everywhere or just in your geographic region?

  • @the-chillian
    @the-chillian 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, that's a mid-range gaming rig. Should serve you very well for video editing.
I've had some good luck with handymen. Last one I hired was through a local referral service, and he got the job done in a more or less satisfactory way. I'm looking for someone else at the moment because I thought he was kind of high-priced (that is, I didn't feel I was getting the best value for the money) and while he didn't do bad work I thought he didn't pace himself properly. He was obviously rushing to get it done by the end of the day, and I'd rather he had worked a bit more deliberately.
I did get a referral from an acquaintance who flips houses, but his handyman is waiting for a knee replacement and might not be able to do the one "weird" job I have for him. (The acquaintance doesn't really fix-n-flip because he generally lives in the houses himself for a couple of years before selling them.)

It’s because you are not an average example. You have a strong and high skill set you literally build up a house from zero if you need to without any problem. May there are some good plumber or electrician but just a very few people can do what you can. That’s why people keep trying to hiring you from different states.
