Well to put it simple persona series is a spin off from another another game series called shin megami tensei
Both series has some supernatural backgrounds and apocalyptic proportion threats
The called personas are supernatural beings that represent part of one true self in the game lore.
Persona 1 and 2 are kinda different from the rest of the series they are more mature happening in the college and stuff. (Don't know much about these, haven't played)
Persona 3 onwards they reinvented the series they gave it a new style focusing in creating social interactions with other characters along the turn battles and rpg elements, the apocalyptic themes still are presents but happen alongside your student life, you have to make friends to get stronger in order to save these friends from impending doom.
Persona 3 main theme is death, and the game is full of symbology and other religious themes, the characters uses evokers to summon their "personas" that they use to fight, but these evokers reassemble guns and have some psychological meaning behind it, you have to kill the illusion the fake self to release the true self.
Persona 3 fes and persona 3 portable are special versions that added new elements to the base game.
Persona 4 is about a policial investigation with mysterious elements, just like the third one have social and high school life elements mixed with the supernatural stuff. But now they don't use those gun shaped evokers, they have to face their inner selfs, The persona 4 Golden is a special version that had one extra episode in the main story, the persona 4 arena is a 2D fighting game, dance all night is a dancing game.
Persona 5 is about fake heros, fake villains and criminals , once again it presents the students life with rpg and supernatural elements together, but now they take masks off as evokers, persona 5 royal is a special version with extra stuff just like persona 4 Golden.
Persona 5 strikers is an action game and works like a direct sequel and spin off from the original persona 5
All the games happen in the same time line and are sequencial, but independent from one another. Persona 5 happens after persona 4 and both happens after persona 3 and so goes on, but they are not direct sequels you can start from anywhere you decide and won't have problems with the story, they only have some references and easter eggs pointing to previous facts from the universe.
Sorry about any misleading information, I am new to the series as a whole, and English is not my mother language, sorry about any mistakes I made. I hope I helped explaining things somehow

The Persona series is based off Carl-Jngian psychology. The various groups travel to a world based on the collective unconscience of people's minds to fight monsters with their Persona (soul self). The plots differ, but the basis of attending school, forging relationships, and fighting monsters is reatined as the series holds a good balance of story and rog gameplay.

Also to give a spoiler free explanation of why they're shooting themselves in the head 💀. Essentially each game has a different story theme going on, and the way the Persona's are summoned reflect that *MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD*
The theme of P3 is moreso Death/Loss and overcoming it. Which is why they use the "guns" (evokers) as a way to overcome the _fear_ of death and become stronger.
In P4, for me at least its a bit difficult to explain but they crush Tarot cards, sorta as a way to show you can shape your own destiny.
And in P5, they rip a mask off their face , which signifies removing the mask you wear in society to fit in, and embracing your inner rebellious spirit.

So just a quick summary of the timeline staying as spoiler free as possible
Persona 1- A group of teenagers play the Persona Game and are given the power of Persona by a God. They then use this power to stop an event called the Eternal Night that would end the world and travel between dimensions to stop Takahisa Kandori from becoming God and eradicating humanity. In game you can only do one of these two routes but canonically they both happen
Persona 2 Innocent Sin- Set a few years after Persona 1, the game follow Tatsuya Suou and his friends after they are attacked by a being known as Joker who grants the wishes or whoever summons him. When they attempt it though, he tries to kill them declaring it punishment for the sin they committed ten years ago. It's up to them remember what they did and stop Joker along with his cult, The Masked Circle
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment- This one's hard to dodge spoilers but basically just know this game and all Persona games after it is set in an alternate timeline where Innocent Sin didn't happen. The game follows Maya Amano, a party member in Innocent Sin, as she tries to uncover the truth about the Joker killings, leading her to team up with some new faces and even some of the Persona 1 characters to stop a grand conspiracy to end the world outside of Sumaru City
Persona 3- From this point on, the games only have a loose connection outside of spinoffs. On Tatsumi Port Island, a hidden hour exists where monsters known as Shadows thrive, devouring the brains of any human being unfortunate enough to be caught in it. However, a group of Persona users funded by the Kirijo Group are immune to the effects of the Dark Hour and use their power to find a means of destroying it
Persona 4- In the small town of Inaba, a series of untraceable serial killings have begun as the killer is pushing their victims into a world inside the TVs. The TV world, like the Dark Hour of P3, is filled with Shadows and covered by a fog that is dangerous to humans, leading to the death of the victim. A group of high schoolers, with the help of a weird thing named Teddie, unlock the power of Persona and resolve to end the killings, rescuing anyone thrown into the TV along the way
Persona 4 Arena/Ultimax- One of the few direct sequels, the Arena games take place during Golden Week. The protagonist goes to visit his friends only to find half of them have been kidnapped. He and his remaining friends return to the TV World to save them, running into the grown up members of the Persona 3 cast and a strang girl named Labrys who claims to be the student council president of their high school despite none of them ever meeting her before
Persona 5- A group of teenagers discover the Metaverse, a word made up of the cognition of those in the real world. With the power of their Personas, and the advice of a cat-like being named Morgana, they form the Phantom Thieves of Hearts and use the Metaverse to force the corrupt members of society to confess to their crimes
Persona 5 Strikers- During summer vacation, The Phantom Thieves decide to go on a road trip but upon returning to the Metaverse, they learn of these new places called Jails, city-wide domains in which anyone who enters has their desires stolen, making them subservient to the Monarch. With intel from Inspector Zenkichi Hasegawa, the Thieves go from city to city, changing the hearts of the monarchs and giving the stolen desires back to the people
And that's everything without getting even more into alternate timeline junk which is pretty much begging for spoilers and I won't do that. One last thing, Persona 3 FES, Portable, Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal are re-releases of the original game with more content

I feel personas 3-5 are definitely solidly connected. In persona 4 they explicitly go to tatsumi port and meet a social link to 3, and in P3P the female mc meets a main cast member of 4, and ofc there are multiple direct references to persona 4 in persona 5 most common being the constant connections made between Goro Akechi and Naoto Shirogane. P3R takes the place of regular P3 and P3FES in timeline, even if it has minor changes. Strikers is canon, as is Tactica, even if it is difficult to place correctly, as they both comply with both P5 and P5R, at least time wise.
Edit: In conclusion, what you were discussing is not canonicity for most of the games you mention. P3D and P5D happened, they don’t remember it. Same for Q games. P4A and P4AU are at least canon to each other, and most likely in general, as P5 does mention Yukari Takeba as a famous actress from a superhero show, and if I can take a guess it’s likely that in Jp line it says tokusatsu, implying featherman, so that happened. FeMC is in her own world and is only canon thanks to Q2, if not, then she wouldn’t be.

Mainline persona games are tun-based JRPG.
Persona 2 is a duology of games.
Persona 1 and 2 are *REALLY* different from persona 3-5
Persona 3 have several different versions and all of them are different:
P3 FES is a better version of original with an epilogue story campaign(for ps2)
P3 Portable is a port for psp with really downgraded graphics, P4 combat changes(but it was not rebalanced with them in mind, but its not like P4 was hard or something) and female main character (often referred as FemC). FemC route has A LOT of differences from original story, but still have the same ending.
P3 Reload is a remake of original P3 with some little additions from FES, Battle system from P3 Portable, some mechanics from P4 and P5 and few brand new mechanics. New dlc for it is a remarke of epilogue from P3 FES.
P4 has a rerelease called P4 Golden, it is just P4 but better.
P4 Arena games *are* fighting games, they also continuing story from P3 FES but leaves it on a cliffhanger for no reason.
Dancing games are rhythm games, P4 Dancing only really deserves attention because it has actual story and Specialist dance.
PQ games are supposed to be crossover with Etrian Odyssey but only have gameplay from it.
P5 Royal is expanded version of P5.
P5 Strikers is an action-based spin-off of p5, also it is technically a sequel for it, i quess...
P5 Tactica is turn-based strategy spin-off, really similar to XCOM
There is also P5 Chinese gacha game in beta testing stage of development

P1 & P2 are more similar to it's sister franchise Shin Megami Tensei. SMT has generally darker tones & tends to always deal with an apocalypse & makes the player chose the route of order or chaos. Persona 1 is actually inspired by a 1 off game called SMT "IF" which is kinda like... what "if" SMT involved teenagers in a school setting. So, (especially in 1) the undertones are supposed to be mysterious & spooky. P2 follows suit BUT it's second part is meant to hype you up for the conclusion of the first part so it's opening is more peppy.
All the games have their fans & it's a fact that with tech changing & evolving & them testing the waters (and getting a new director) lots of things were swapped & dropped. People more into SMT tend to like the early game's concepts & tones more. However, in the west, most people were introduced to Persona 3 & 4 first, since P1 & P2 has a lot of issues when being brought to overseas. So the moral inducing drama was re-directed back to the SMT franchise & left the youthful vibe of school years to color the Persona franchise from 3 onward. P3 still being a bit darker a subject matter than the rest, is still tonally different in its music & aesthetic than P1 & P2.
Also, I hate to say it like this but... kids had more patience back in the day to sit through something quiet & non flashy. 😅 Sorry for being a boomer but I re-watched older movies & play older games recently & it really becomes noticeable how everything now needs to be more fast pace & over stimulating. Back then, just the pauses & moments of quiet conveyed so much mood to media. Kinda sad we're loosing that.

I'm sure other has said it below somewhere but:
Persona is like Final Fantasy where each game is its own story.
So P1 is its own story.
      P2 has 2 games.
      P3-P4 (their own games)
P5 has it's main game & P5 Strikers is it's direct sequel with a different, more action based, play style.
They have all had re-mastered/re-releases versions with add on stories & quality of life improvements over the years.
They've also had an unimaginable amount of spin offs from fighting games to rhythm games & A SLEW of Crossovers. Also, you might know Joker because he's in Smash Bros!
Persona 3 had a head-to-toe remake this February as well since it's a fandom favorite. So yes... the Persona series is VAST.

I recommend Persona 3 Reload as a great first game in the franchise. It's easily the most accessible in terms of content and gameplay.
Starting with 3, they changed directors, and they decided to make the games way more stylized and character-driven to make the franchise more distinguished from Shin Megami Tensei, the series Persona is a spin-off of. The games are essentially a life simulator with turn based combat (sorta like an adult/ more complicated version of Pokemon if you haven't played other JRPGs). Each of the games tends to have a major underlying theme that persists through the stories of all the characters you meet and through the main story. Even the way characters use their Personas is symbolic to each respective games' theme. If you're a person who likes a lot of dialogue and character development, these are the games for you.

Persona 3 reload just came out and it was a much awaited remake of the original persona 3 from 2006, and honestly it’s probably the best place to start in terms of quality of life features. Persona games follow a story of a main character throughout a year where you balance their real life relationships with going into dungeons and fighting enemies called shadows. The persona is basically a character from culture or mythology that acts as your mask, and the characters summon them to fight shadows. Strengthening bonds with characters in the real world strengthens your personas in the alternate world basically. The mainline persona games of 3, 4, and 5 focus on characters progressing through a story and finding their true self through different means. In persona 3 they face death (the pistols that they call evokers simulate this), in persona 4 they turn to fate (hence crushing the tarot cards), and persona 5 they rip off their mask and rebel against unjust authority. These themes are the focuses of the main story also.

Basically they love making “directors cut” versions of the main titles a few years later that have usually ~1.5x the content with some things streamlined/new features etc. That’s what P3 FES, P4 Golden, P5 Royal were.
The rest are mostly spin-off games which aren’t canon, or remasters/new versions for PSP, the exceptions to that are P4 Dancing (they decided the story was canon I guess), P5 Strikers, and P3 Reload.
The Q games are spin-off crossover games for the 3DS between the most popular entries that have the same turn based battles but are otherwise play like the Etrian Oddysey series.
The dancing games are just rhythm games. The Persona 4 Arena games are 2D fighting games made by Arc System Works (who made blaz-blue and Guilty Gear).
Persona 5 Strikers is a realtime action rpg codeveloped with Koei Tecmo (who make the Dynasty Warriors games) but it is a full fledged sequel to Persona 5 and much more than other warriors spin-off games you’ll see.
P3 Reload is a remake from the ground up of the original P3 (2006) which was released on the PS2. The gameplay is modernized to be up to date with Persona 5 and they are adding additional content from the FES version as DLC.

The first two person openings are a little less boring when the quotes are translated - The quote in the Persona 1 opening is a Buddhist koan (that is, philosphy poem kinda thing) about the nature of reality vs dreams ("I dreamt I was a Butterfly"), while Persona 2's quote I think was from some sort of tragic romance media which I'm not familiar with but generally there's a lot of emphasis on mirrors and the speaker being horrified at seeing someone else with their face reflecting their own heartbreak towards some woman who is implied to be dead.
The series in general uses a LOT of Juangian psychology terms and symbolism, some of it outright (Persona, Shadow, the sea of collective human consciousness/Sea of Souls are all concepts used or referenced multiple times) while some other stuff IS in there but a bit more subtle (I'm near 90% certain the Velvet Room Attendants are meant to be the protagonist's anima/animus but like, that's very much 'not needed to be known or ever stated in game' stuff XD)
And yeah, much as I love the Persona openings they're not exactly a great introduction to the series for newbies outside of hooking them on the vibes.
More 'fun symbolism you can come back to and overanalyse' after you've played the game and are able to go 'Oh. Ooohhhh so that's what that meant..!' next to bopping music and showing off the main cast and general aesthetic~ XD
(Side note: a LOT of things in the game are symbolism, like the P3 shooting yourself? Yeah the characters have to do that for explained in game reasons but like, the implications of what it means that in order to fight they have to willingly hold a gun to their own head... I'll just say the P3 cast be having a hard time of things and just leave it at that XDDD)
As for which is best out of 3, 4 and 5... That's honestly going to depend on what kind of tone and story you like most as they've all got fantastic plots, music and characters.
Personally P5 -Royal- is my fav because of its aesthetic (love all that red and jazzy music) and it's kind of a mix between phantom thievery plots and noir, but like P3's hip hop/rap minimalism and death/life themes, and P4's J Pop, realism/70s colour bombing and mix of murder mystery and self discovery are all pretty great

And if you're a fan of JRPGs I'd highly recommend them, though once played it can be kinda hard going back to other series since the quality jump can be a lot~ XD
As for which to start with... I'd recommend either Persona 5 Royal, Persona 3 FES or Reload (the choice between FES and Reload is almost entirely between 'do you want better animated cutscenes and some plot stuff as automatically with the game and not DLC (FES) or do you want the newest version with a LOT of upgraded stuff but perhaps weaker aesthetics?' (Reload)), or Persona 4 Golden (P4G is more than little dated UI and graphics wise compared to P5R and P3R but comparable to most regular JRPGs so like, it's definitely playable but might be hard to go back to after playing the other two).
As for which of those three, I'd say go for whatever most fits your preference in aesthetics and story blurb - they're all good, all set in the same world, and aside from some really minor stuff in P5 (mostly hidden easter eggs and one 'should be major but kinda isn't' plotpoint) you don't lose anything by playing them out of number order, though slight warning, P3 and *especially* P4 take a while to get you to the active gameplay as they've got loads and loads of plot setup happening. It's good stuff but felt I should give a heads up just in case you're the energetic 'need to do things now' sort of player~ XD

Ok i know i commented about but to summarise it: persona is a series of jrpgs that mix life sim aspects, each game explores a different plot and group of characters but have mostly similar gameplay, in persona you play as a protagonist and go through your daily life and get to live through each day in a calendar system, you can also date and get to know different characters, alongside that you can go to plot related dungeons alongside your teammates and fight shadows with your persona. Persona is based on a theory from karl jung a psychologist who hypothesised that humans have multiple versions of themselves that they want others to see, a persona, the opposite of that is a shadow the worst part of you that you can’t accept, persona plays on this by having characters literally summon their “other self” as a persona, usually these personas manifest as different mythological characters such as greek mythology etc, shadows in the persona games are evil versions of oneself that display the worst parts of someone, in reality shadows are good and must be accepted in order to be tamed, when a shadow is tamed it becomes a persona. Persona games mix the life sim and rpg mechanics like for example befriending certain characters might yield strong benefits in battle and vice versa. Persona 4 golden, persona 5 royal, persona 3 fes and portable are not sequels but enhanced versions of the same game with extra content and a postgame.

I only played 3, 4, and 5, so I can't really talk about 1 and 2, but bassically, to make some sense
Persona 3 is darker, as shown by the characters shooting themselves in the head. Pressuring themselves to "near death" makes your persona trigger. In other words, by using the gun and putting it to their heads, the characters are putting themselves under pressure, and their soul reacts by releasing the persona.
Persona 4: Persona 4 has a happier vibe, for sure. The main point in that game is that the TV's are a dimension to another world where somehow people are getting pushed into the TVs by some unknown character. Persona 4 is like a murder mystery, and honestly, it's the best game in many peoples eyes.
Persona 5: Persona 5 takes a very different approach by using the metaverse, which is an app that lets you enter anybody's heart. That's why "Steal Your Heart" was in both intros. They (the team in Person 5) go into corrupt people's "hearts" and steal their desires, which change the person in the real world.
Sorry for the delay, I just wanted to somewhat explain.

no don't be sorry! It's just slightly less boring when you can read what the intro is since the intro is just words XD It's an interesting and long ride. I know other people have mentioned but the core games would be Persona 3 Reload (the one that just came out) Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal for the definitive versions. They do all have very different vibes to them and the 'best' is pretty subjective to which ones click the most with the person playing but they all are an interesting ride. And yes so many dancing games because the music is so good across the board. Even all of the background themes get stuck in your head years after. @@zero38xt

Not sure if it was explained in stream but Persona 4 golden was a remake that added some new stuff, and Persona 5 Royal is the same thing, adds some extra stuff, specifically both add a new dungeon, and some new story beats. But imo, the best thing is none of these are connected. Sure, some of the spinoffs are connecting to other games, but thats balanced by the trope of "don't worry, you won't remember this once you fix what's wrong so we don't have continuity errors", which is the case in Q and Q2, while Persona 4 Arena and Ultimax are soft sequels to 4 in a standard fighting game setting, since these games don't typically get sequels (Same with the Dancing games). You do get references to previous games bc the numbered entries take place a couple years after each other (with the exception of 5, which has no set date, though people have made connections to get a proper year). Like you can start with Persona 5 and be perfectly fine, have a good time, then work backwards because while Persona 3 Reload isn't really that hard, Persona 4 can be rough for someone who isn't wellversed in all the mechanics of Persona beforehand (also really fucking grindy if you aren't careful). Now that I think about it, I think Strikers is the closest thing to an actual, full blown story sequel.

Persona 2 has Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment as direct sequel. Each numbered persona entry is it's own cast of characters and stories. So they wanted to make a sequel to persona 2 to continue the story which is eternal punishment.
Also, other than persona 1&2, each entry gets a definitive edition. With 3's being FES (Before most recently Reload) and also Portable (But having some drawbacks of FES whilst Portable adds FeMC, basically a female protagonist with a different route through the story). Persona 4 getting it's definitive being Golden. And 5 getting Royal. Every other is a spinoff of that numbered entry

The reason personas 3-5 have such a distinct difference from 1 and 2 is that there is a different director behind the series. Shoji Meguro is the director for the original series and those games are considered more "serious" and "challenging" both gameplay wise and story wise as it follows more with the smt franchise. While Katsura Hashino is the current director that has made the franchise more stylized and mainstream. So 3-5 gets all the spinoffs while 1 and 2 are forgotten but are loved by super fans of the franchise.

I don’t know if anyone has said, but I’ll give a rundown on 3-5 and their spin-offs
3, 3FES (Featival), and 3Portable follow SEES (Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad), and their journey in the Dark Hour, using Evokers (the gun objects) to summon their Personas. FES added the Answer, an epilogue to expand the story
4 and 4 Golden follow the Investigation Team as they crush cards to summon Personas to save people from being murdered in a TV
4 Arena and Ultimax are fighting games, expanding on both 3 and 4’s stories
5 follows the Phantom Theives to reform society by ripping off masks to summon Personas. Strikers takes place after that story and is a shorter hack-n-slash title. Tactica is in another world, freeing people from slavery.
All Dancing games except 4’s are non-canon, and neither is Tactica. Strikers is canon, and so is the extra content in FES, but not the extra content in Golden or Royal. I recommend playing these games, but be prepared to sink upwards of 100 hours each

I definitely recommend playing! The games have some of the best BGMs I've ever heard (def top 5), and stunning visuals. Persona 3 was recently remade (P3 Reload), and Persona 5 (+ P5 Royal) aren't that old too. If you mention visuals in a video game, I immediately think of Persona 5 (P3R copied the heavy visual style that P5 had). Persona 4 looks a bit janky, but I assume it'll be remade soon enough too. Also Persona 5 Royal, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 3 FES are all ''upgraded'' versions of the vanilla game, with extra characters, more content, and in P5R's case, a whole new antagonist. Also, P1 and P2 were a lot different than P3, P4 & P5. They were almost entirely different games.
And the reason P3 got remade a lot was because:
P3F - Upgraded version (mentioned above)
P3P - Watered-down for the PSP, also gave a female protag option (hence why the opening was two-sided or whatever)
P3R - Remade with modern graphics and style, after more than a decade

Persona is mainly a JRPG series where you're a high school student that gets involved in supernatural happenings mainly revolving around human psychology and that kind of stuff, usually having to go into another world made out of the collective unconcious, the main characters fight the enemy "Shadows" with their inner selves made manifest in that world, their "Personas", made stronger by their bonds with their friends and each other. It is kind of a monster collector where you can recruit or create other Personas for your party or protagonist to give them different moves and resistances.
While being a student that goes to school is the characters' background in 1 and 2, it was until 3 where it became a central part of gameplay where you have to balance out going to school and supernatural dungeon crawling, where you also get items and improve your main character in the real world in preparation for the cognitive world. Streghtening your relationships with friends too in turn powers up the Personas you create further, and if it's a Party Member they could also get new moves or abilities.
Each numbered game is its own story that don't really require the previous game to be played but do cannonically take place after each previous one, giving room to references and continuity connections. Tho spinnoffs tend to actually follow up on the game they're based on or directly conect the games with each other, and then there's also P2 Eternal Punishment, which is a direct sequel to P2 Innocent Sin, since it's the same story it's still P2 while 1 and 3 are not.
Actually P4 Arena and P5 Strikers are direct sequels to P4 and P5 respectively just with a different gameplay style each instead of staying a Turn Based RPG.
Atlus is also known to rerelease enchanced versions of games after some time and Persona did this a lot.
And now, in extremely oversimplified summaries, the games go a bit like this:
-In P1 you and your friends play the "persona game" which is rumored to give you a mysterious power but shortly after strange happenings start occurring in town, including you actually getting the Power of Persona and the ill friend you just visited being mysteriously fully recovered.
-In P2 Innocent Sin every rumor now starts to become reality, let's just say this eventually and infamously goes places and leave it at that. This time the "Joker game" is said to summon an entity known as The Joker, who will grant your wishes, but in reality he kind of literally takes away your will to live and also erases you from everyone else's lives, he seems to have a personal grudge with the protagonist but you don't know why, he also goes around spreading more rumors that will become reality to spread more chaos. So the party decides to investigate Joker.
-P2 EP preety much requires you to beat IS as the events of the game are kindof the consequences of the previous game's ending, which would of course mean humongous spoilers.
-In P3, every time it turns midnight, everything stops for an extra hour, the hidden "Dark Hour", Shadows appear and the school you just transfered to also turns into a huge tower known as Tartarus. Those who remain concious during the Dark Hour are either at risk of falling victim to the Shadows or have the potential to become Persona Users, but unlike other Persona Users, most of this game's main party can't normally summon their Persona without shooting the Evoker, a gun shaped device, to their head. Every full moon an exceptinally powerful Shadow appears.
This game had an enchanced version (P3 FES) and a PSP version (P3 Portable) and now also has a remake (P3 Reload)
-P3 FES had an epilogue episode(which will also be DLC for Reload) but it very heavily revolves around the game's ending so yeah, don't play that first.
-In P4 you move with your uncle for a year and hear rumors of a "Midnight Channel" which you discover shows people who eventually die. Turns out there's a world inside the TV, which form is dependant on the person who entered it and is inhabited by Shadows. Someone is throwing people in there to die when the Shadows go berserk on a foggy day. Your job is to rescue the people thrown in the TV and find the culprit.
It had an enchanced rerelease on PS Vita (Persona 4 Golden)
-PQ is a 3DS Spinoff that crosses over Persona 3 and 4, its gameplay takes after Eithrian Oddisey I think it's called? (Idk how to spell it or if it's even the right game, someone correct me plz) it's technically cannon but the reason I'm saying "technically" is sort of a spoiler
-PQ2 is similar now also adding Persona 5
-P4 Arena is a direct sequel to P4 in the form of a Fighting Game spinoff, which also follows up on P3 by having its cast meet up with the P4 one.
It eventually had an enchanced version in Arena Ultimax.
-In P5 you're framed for a crime and put on probation, you discover a strange app on your phone that lets you enter the mind of distorted people, which take the form of "Palaces" according to how they see the world, you and your friends become "Phantom Thieves" that infiltrate these Palaces to steal their "Treasure", the distorted desires that make them the way they are, enacting a Change of Heart and completely stopping their current dangerous behavior.
(Also the main character uses the codename Joker but has no relation to P2's Joker)
It recieved an encganced version in the form of P5 Royal
-P5 Strikers is a direct sequel to P5 in the style of a "Warriors" game, tho it's also kindof like an Action RPG.
-P5 Tactica is a Tactical RPG that takes place between P5 and Strikers
Then they also made "Dancing" Rythm Game spinoffs for games 3 to 5 because why not I guess?

In terms of gameplay, the mainline games are mostly turn-based RPGs, and P3-5 added in a time management/life sim element. Persona 1 and both Persona 2's (Innocent Sin and its sequel, Eternal Punishment) are more dungeon-crawling focused games.
Persona 3 originally came out on the PS2, and had a "complete edition" called Fes (mostly added stuff like The Answer and Aigis' social link). Then P3 Portable was a port to the Playstation Portable that added a female MC (whose life-sim elements are slightly different). The recent Reload is mostly a remake of Fes (they're still working on the Answer, apparently, and it's DLC out later this year)
Persona 4 had the two Arena games (Ultimax crosses over with P3), which as you guessed, are fighting games by Arcsys. Ultimax is actually pretty good, or so I've heard from friends of mine who enjoy fighting games. Then there was Golden, its enhanced rerelease (added some extra chunks of content, new life sim aspects, a new dungeon, some new mechanics, extra story stuff interwoven throughout the narrative). Dancing was them just... making a rhythm game. It's pretty good for a rhythm game. Eventually they did the rhythm games for 3 and 5 which are not as good.
Persona 5 (and its enhanced re-release, Royal, which adds, once again, a few new characters, extra story beats, new mechanics, rebalances some bosses, etc.) is the most recent mainline game, and it came out 8 years ago. While dancing wasn't that great, they did release Strikers, which is a Warriors-style action RPG that is fun as hell. Probably the best spinoff the series has managed. Tactica came out recently and is a tactical RPG (grid-based; very similar to Xcom in a lot of ways, if you've played that).
The two Persona Q games are dungeon-crawlers. If you've seen Etrian Odyssey (also made by Atlus) it's basically those with a Persona skin. They're... fine. If you like dungeon crawling RPGs, they're good enough.

    To explain the guns:
Each Persona game has the characters use different methods to summon their Personas. A Persona is born when one accepts their "Shadow", or the part of themselves they don't want to face. In Persona 3, a Persona can only be summoned by one steeling themselves and facing the inevitability of death. To do this on command, they use Evokers. An Evoker looks like a gun, and they shoot themselves with it to simulate suicide, forcing them to confront the idea of themselves dying.

in persona 3 the "guns" are actually gun-shaped devices that overload the fear center of the brain(I'm fairly certain that would kill a normal person) forcing the persona(basically a stand) to come out the reason it's gun-shaped is because it fits with the games theme of accepting fate and not being afraid to face it(it's basically "oh you're not afraid of death? PROVE IT")

It's so difficult to understand the intros without knowledge of what the games are about. So its understandablethat you would have more questions than answers. I'm sure it's been explained by now. But each game has its own theme and quirks. For example the guns in 3 were called Evokers. They were thr "tools" that were used by the characters to "evoke" their persona's. Which are their fighting powers. Or "inner personalities" As someone stated. 3s theme was about mortality and the concepts and presence of life and death. Persona 4s theme was Perception. Hence the TVs and the "tool" of the glasses were used to gain clairity after each person saw their inner selves or personalities. I never got into 5 but the theme from what I understood was about Greed. Where each individual created an inner space based on special clues or hint words that was a reflection of their personalities and the objects of their desires. and the tools in relation were the costumes and code names the characters used, and so on. I may be off base with 5 but like I said I never took time to get into that one.

Persona 3 FES, Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal are rereleases of the original games with more content, Persona 3 Portable is another release of Persona 3, but without the FES content, with some mechanic differences, and with the option to choose female main character, that changes the story slightly. Persona 3 Reload is a full remake of Persona 3, and the latest DLC that was announce is for new content from FES. The rest of the games that have extra to the title (like Persona 4 Arena of Persona 5 Strikers) are spin-offs/sequels with different game mechanics.
    The spin-off are:
Persona 4 Arena - fighting game with P4 gang and 3 P3 characters.
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax - sequel to P4 Arena, this time with all the P3 characters accept the main character.
    Persona Q - crossover between P3 and P4
    Persona Q2 - crossover between P3 P4 and P5
Dancing games - exactly what it sounds like.
Persona 5 Strikers - a hack and slash warrior like game, set around 6 months after P5.
Persona 5 Tactica - Tactics game.
All the P5 spinoffs are not including characters that were added in The Royal, accept for Tactica, that have them as DLC. All the P4 spinoffs that came after the golden do include them.

Long story short: While Persona 1 and 2 (which was split into 2 games) are tied to each other, the other 3 (which are more mainstream) are all separate entities. It is indeed a JRPG alongside a High school dating sim essentially. There are also some fighting games, dancing games and a few fanservice-type games in the Persona Q series.
In all games, the characters have a contract with a certain "demon" or often historical or mythological figure that aids them in their fighting against ... well a lot. The main thing that ties them together is these demons (or Persona's, hence the name) and the character Igor, the man with the long nose.
Persona started out as a subseries to the Megami Tensei series (more often referred to by Shin Megami Tensei, don't know if you've ever played that?) but has since gotten so big that the mainline series has taken a back seat.
It is a REALLY fun series, however 1 and 2 didn't age particularly well and haven't seen a release on any console since around 2009 or so on the PSP? You can play them on the VITA if you want. Overall 5 is the easiest to get into due to the most QoL updates over the others, although that might have changed with 3 (the one where they all shoot themselves in the head so much) recently seeing a rerelease. I haven't played that one yet so I can't offer too much insight on that.
Before I forget, the Third entry is the only one where they shoot themselves in the head, so if that's a dealbreaker for you then there's still the others to try.
As for the Dancing games (I posted this comment before watching, my bad), they're rhythm games. You have 6 buttons you have to press in time with them passing over the notes. Meanwhile the characters dance in the background. There's more VN stuff to do so it expands on the characters a bit more. As to why they did it, Persona's Soundtracks have long garnered praise so this was a way to show it off.
On the Strikers game, that one's a Musou (or beat-em-up? I'm not familiar with Musou's so I may be wrong on that) After 4's success they really started making spin-off after spin-off after spin-off. At least it keeps us busy?

games like persona 3 FES/Portable/reload, persona 4 golden, and persona 5 royal are remakes/updates on their original games
persona 4 arena(P4A), persona 4 arena ultimax and persona 4 dancing all night are not just spin offs but actual sequels to the series as they actually do add something within their stories. even persona Q has been called out as part of the official timeline
though Pq is officially cannon PQ2 is not as it features a non-cannon player character, the female protagonist from persona 3 portable
the shooting yourself thing was only in persona 3 as the way they summoned their personas. persona 4 had cards that served the same purpose, and persona 5 has masks for it
in P4AU they used teddy's japanese name instead of his english name
the dancing games(p3 dancing moonlight/p4 dancing all night/ p5 dancing starlight) are literally rhythm games
like with the dancing games, the arena games also change genre but instead go from JRPG to arcade fighter
hopefully i covered everything you may have questions about. i purposely left out any answers that may spoil the story

Haven’t seen any one say this yet, so basically all of the Arena, dancing, and Q games are spinoffs. And just like how persona 3 got many remakes, persona 4 golden and persona 5 Royale are remakes of said games with more content ⭐️

  • @animeguy364
    @animeguy364 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

So persona 3, 4, and 5 are like the core titles but atlas likes to remake them or add new features into it so Fes and Reload are remakes of 3. Golden is a remake of 4 and Royal is a remake of 5.
The Q games were released on 3DS and were a dungeon crawler sort of thing.
The 3 games with Dancing in the title are Rhythm games and are honestly my favorites but I’m kinda a huge rhythm game nerd.
The arena games are indeed fighting games

Here's is an explanation of all the game's versions:
Persona 1 Revelations was on Turbo Graphics, (very old) then it got a PlayStation remake THEN it got a PlayStation Portable remake.
Persona 2 Innocent Sin is Persona 2 and Eternal Punishment is a sequel. (I haven't even come close finishing either of these).
Persona 3 FES is just a better version Persona 3, that also adds a new epilogue and more content. Persona 3 Portable is the version for the PlayStation Portable that also JUST HAPPENED TO BE PORTED TO STEAM!!! Persona 3 Reload is literally just a remake (better than Portable). Persona 3 Dancing is just a dancing game.
Persona 4 Golden basically adds another ending, gives extra content, AND completely remasters the entire game! (while also making the lighting worse). Persona 4 Arena is... well a pixelated fighting game. P4A Ultimax adds more content AND is also a sequel. Persona 4 Dancing All Night is another dancing game EXCEPT it has a CANNON story with animated cut scenes.
Persona 5 Royal adds a TON of new content while (IDK how) making the game LONGER. Persona 5 Strikers is a sequel (that plays differently from a regular Persona game), Persona 5 Tactica is an example of ATLUS milking Persona.
    Don't worry about Persona Q, He's a spin off.

Pwrsona 1,2IS,2EP intros: they kind amake more sense once you play the game (from whay ive been told)
Persona 3,FES,Portable,Reload: The shooting themselves is symbolic of them letting go of what holds them back mentally, its how they summon their personas. Also the reason the opening is mirrored in portable is to represent portable's main new addition: Kotone Shiomi, the new female protagonist option
Persona 4,Golden: That weird blob thing is Teddie. Hes a weirdo, dont mind him
Also stuff like P3FES, P3Portable, and P4Golden arent sequels but rather expanded versions with additional story, extra characters, new personas to use, the works. Think Sonic Adventure to Sonic Adventure DX

So, as to the game's genres.... All the numbered titles are JRPGs with turn-based combat (3-5 adding life sim elements), the Q games are first-person dungeon crawlers and the Arena games are, indeed, fighting games made by Arc System Works (Guilty Gear, Dragon Ball FighterZ, BlazBlue, among others). Tactica is a strategy RPG that's a bit like Fire Emblem or X-com or similar things. The Dancing _______ are rhythm games. Why? 'Cause the series has good music and a spin-off can make money.

Basically, they all have the power to summon a "persona" which is like a manifestation of their inner selves that comes out in the form of a god, demon, etc. and they use it to fight the enemies of the game, the shadows. The "local dealer" as you call him appears in a lot of the games and gives the player the ability to summon multiple personas (usually you only get the one) in 3 and 5, not sure about the other games as I haven't played. In persona 3, you fight during the dark hour, a hidden hour between 12 and 1 where everyone turns into a coffin and shadows roam. The guns are not real guns; they are called evokers and are used to shock the user enough to summon their persona easily as they need to be focused to be able to do it. As far as I know they only appear in 3. In persona 5, the protagonist and his friends travel to the shadow world through a mysterious app on their phone and they go into corrupt people's palaces (which are manifestations of their mind) and steal their treasure which represents the thing they desire most. Once it's gone, the person goes into a blank state and either declines until they commit suicide or they end up changing their ways. Also, they have masks that they RIP off of their faces instead of using the guns in persona 3. Both are amazing games in my opinion and if JRPGs are your thing you should definitely try them. The soundtracks in game are as good as the openings.

I can’t recommend persona enough, honestly. It’s such an amazing game series, and if you plan to play them all, I’d suggest starting with Persona 4 Golden. Also it’s a really good idea to stay as far away from spoilers as you can, because there are some twists that people love to talk about. Oh, also they’re discounted until the 6’th, so if you’re planning on it, you should totally play em! There’s no wrong way to go about it, but like… they’re some good ass games.

Just stumbled on this. As spoiler free as I can be, here's the best way I can describe the games:
Persona 3: tackling the serious topic of life and death, they do so incredibly well. Throw in some monsters, super powers, the world being in a weird state with them trying to understand what's going on. It's a great game but may be a slow burn too. I HIGHLY recommend you avoid all spoilers. (That applies to each game, but especially 3)
Persona 4: more of a fun and laid back theme, they're out to solve a mystery! Like Persona 3 though, they all have their personas (their powers, related to their inner selves) with monsters to fight.
Persona 5: They're thieves out to steal your heart! No jobs too much for the Phantom Thieves! Of course powers and fun applies.
Would recommend them all, Persona 3 Reload is a great place to start. Normals too easy though, do merciless for a more natural Persona gameplay experience. After that, take your pick of 4 or 5. They all have distinctive music too. I think 4 would be a good choice after 3, because its so chill and has uplifting music.

lmao, when he said in Persona 3 "now they're actually trying" LMAO, you have to understand that Persona is a spin-off series. The main series is called Shin Megami Tensei, where they fight using demons, rather than calling them personas.
Persona 1 and 2 are wild, you fight Hitler straight up in one of them, but starting at Persona 3 I believe someone in charge left or something along those lines? Thus the direction changed, and obviously music wise in modern day, got better, but it IS also wild to say they weren't trying in Persona 1 and 2 when they're also relatively just older (1996 and 1999 respectively, and then Persona 3 didn't come out for another 7 years in 2006). It just had a totally different vibe and goal compared to when it swapped to 3, 4 and 5.
It doesn't really matter which game you start with, personally I started with 5, then went backwards. They're all interesting in their own ways, but I do agree that Persona 5 Royal is more than likely a good place to start and really get into it. Every game has their own situation and premise, but they're all connected as well, just years apart even in-universe. Which is why for the Persona 4 fighting games you saw Persona 3 characters, except they looked clearly older than before.
It's up to you, though, you can start with Persona 3: Reload, Persona 4 Golden or Persona 5 Royal. Essentially the definitive editions of their repsective stories.
