Seeing people say that udder ointment is used for excema and such, which it totally can be, but as a person who grew up working on farms in the midwest of usa, it is truly the best product for protecting skin from cracking in winter. I used to use it like hand lotion, lip balm, and would sometimes put some on my nose and cheeks on windy days to protect from windburn. We didnt even have any dairy animals, but we always had to have some on hand in the barn. I also had a tiny tin that I kept in my car for emergencies until I moved to the wet and rainy pacific northwest and stopped having a need for it. We'd also use it on cuts and scrapes on the animals. It is originally to protect dairy animals' udders from becoming chapped, which can happen in dry weather, but it has so many uses. And it's not made from milk! The one I always used was just straight lanolin, which is an oil/wax that is produced by sheep to make their wool waterproof and is removed when processing the wool for yarn.

    Hello Jack,
you should do a video reading south or latin american authors!!! It fits with your proposition to read more translated books and the Latin American Literature is a fascinating gorgeous world!! Garcia Marquez, Cortazar, Allende, and more, theres so so so SO many classics to read and the prose and style is so unique. You would have a lot to analyze and explore. I am German, but I find the Latam prose fascinating, I would love a video on it!!

    • @tardbug
      @tardbug 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I read it a few years ago, and also loved it. The only thing I found strange was that while Ove is described as so incredibly old he's no longer relevant to society, and is basically on death's door, it's revealed that he's only 59. I'm not sure if that was a translation error, or what. But I just threw the age out and pretended he was 80.
Backman's other novel, Anxious People, is also fantastic.

Highly recommend that book, I don't think I have ever stared at the ceiling for so long after finishing a book as I did for that one. And I have never seen people written as well as they were in it. Fredrick Backmann is quickly becoming one of my fave writers. He has another book that I Iove called "My grandmother sends her regards and apologises" (I read it in norwegian, but I'm pretty sure that's the english title). The whole book is written from the perspective of a little girl, which gives it a really interesting point of view. The book tackles heavy topics, but describes them how a child would. It's really good with lots of interesting charcters and storylines. Definetly a tear-jerker!

Udder ointment is ointment for cows udders, to prevent rash/pain as a result of milking. Its kind of numbing and tingly and has gotten popular for people. My dad used to use it for his chronic pain, the shop keepers say they sell more to individuals than to farmers now

I read The Discomfort of Evening in Dutch (before it got populair, humble brag). Seemingly almost every Dutch person has read it, it's a bestseller for a year now. I'm afraid your gonna hate it, just keep in mind that there's no plot and a lot of references to Christian-early-2000's-winter-dutch-farmlife.
Marieke Lucas Rijneveld is mainly a poet, and that shines through, so if you miss any plot points or weird symbolisms, don't worry about it, this is one of those books a lot of people love, but don't get (like me). Please don't dismiss it for it's weirdness and horrifying scenes. I hope the translator has kept the essence of his work.

It's basically like bepanthen but for cow udders, so it can help repair cuts, or grazes that the cow may get on their udder.

As a swede, hearing you pronounce the E in Ove
    Me:
*impressed*, as most English speakers do not. You:
    -"Forget all about the E"
    HAHA soo close
Also Fredrik Backman who wrote A man called Ove just have the most wholesome instagram, recommend!

Yoo, i was so happy that he mentioned a swedish book and he was so close to saying it right!! But then kept on butchering the name... love fredrik Backman though

Hahaha had the exakt same reaktion. "Oh, you said the name right!" Then "Oh no, don't ignore Ove".. This is one of my favourite books, and I love Ove as a character. Interesting to se what Jack thinks about it.

I'm so excited you're reading the discomfort of evening! I read it in the original dutch and found it extremely impressive and almost traumatically intense. The author initially wrote the story in the form of countless poems, but then decided to string them together into a novel. You can really read this in the poetic language, which I loved!

Jack! You should do a video or series where you take a few books at a time that have been adapted to movies or shows and give us your opinions on how well they adapted and which version you think is better. Books to movies are usually absolutely terrible or incredible

Can I recommend reading Felix Ever After? it's a beautiful story about identity and queerness, featuring a black, trans, queer main character who is discovering his identity while struggling with his seemingly non-existing love life. I personally think this is such an important book to read with how much it focuses on the trans experience, transphobia in the LGBTQ+ community and family relations and I would honestly love to hear your thoughts on it :)

The second pronunciation of Ove is actually closer to the right pronunciation haha!
The O is pronounced as the o’s in “Cool” and the E is pronounced as the E in “Elk”.
Very nice to see some Swedish books gaining traction. Will love to hear your opinions on it!

I would really recommend ‘Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe’. I am not that much of a reader, but I read it in 1 day! It is very poetic and emotional and is written in a bit of a more informal way but it makes it very personal and just amazing! I loved it!

I’m pretty sure the “udder ointment” is referring to Bag Balm! It is used for cow udders but also by farmers (and other folks!) for cracked, chapped, and dry hands. It has a very pungent smell (in my opinion) but it is very effective!
