    When artists that recorded their songs could actually sing in real life.and sound just as good on stage. I may not be this old and have the privilege of saying that I miss those days but I can still say that I love this kind of music much more than music today.

    The greatest decade in the history of recorded music gave us so many great bands. Everyone has their favorites and I'm sure that no one's list will have the same artists, just enjoy them all!!

      True, of course, and your concilatory sentiments are splendid and heartwarming, but any list that has CSNY instead of CCR, the Jefferson Airplane (???) instead of The Band, and the Byrds (????) instead of Sly and the Family Stone, is just kind of ..... silly. (And/or click bait.) And if you're talking "rock acts" rather than "rock bands," obviously Bob Dylan and James Brown have to be here.

    • @HTJB60
      @HTJB60 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OnePost909Well, I guess over the last 50 year's, I've preferred "Click-Bait" LOL . Never liked / had an album by CCR, The
      Band or Sly. Would put Great Society over J A & NRPS instead of CSNY ... Is that 'Click-Bait' or "Musical Preference" ? LOL

    It was a time of great change and so much great original music being made. I would never be able to narrow to 25 let alone 5!

    The nice thing about all these answers is that the 1960's had a lot of great music.I was very lucky to come of age then. Thanks.

    With all the alternate bands being recommended, one thing should be apparent. Almost ANY band of the 1960s would blow the tats off everyone from the last 10 years . . .maybe longer.

    • @MarkRoberts-bj2me
      @MarkRoberts-bj2me 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Except that 60's musicians were not all tatted up like their younger counterparts of today. In the 60's, tats were fashionable for sailors, biker gangs and jailbirds period. Those were much groovier times. You never got a chick's clothes off and saw a huge fucking tat above her ass. Many cuties in their 20's are starting to regret those tats. Sorry Honey, not even a laser can remove them.

      @Warrogue1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There was so much great music in the '60s that to choose the "best" bands you would have to divide it into categories -even starting in the mid-'60s, you have garage rock, British Invasion, psychedelic, Motown, mainstream pop (such as the Turtles, Mamas and the Papas, Grassroots)....what am I leaving out?

    • @Warrogue1
      @Warrogue1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mark Roberts you are right about the tattoos. Even though the hippies were all about freedom and resisting authority, they generally did not go for tattoos. But you left out bikers when you listed the groups that had them.

    Lennon & McCartney belong in the pantheon of great musicians along with Mozart, Beethoven, and the other great classical composers. Quite simply, they had a way with a song, both collectively and as individual artists. The range and depth and style of their music is simply breathtaking. The Beatles are a musical treasure and those of us who came of age in the 1960s were blessed to have been living witnesses.

      Thought about some others including The Kinks, The Animals, The Byrds, The Zombies, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Buffalo Springfield, all of which left their timeless marks, but do not feel they could break into the Top 10, and certainly none would be in the Top 5. So much good music and it was gone before we knew it.

    Depending on the level of influence that sixties bands have had on the development of rock and roll, my listing is as follows:
    1. Beatles
    2. Rolling Stones
    3. CREAM and JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE
    4. The Doors and The Who
    5. Animals, Kinks and the Yardbirds
    Others like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin are seventies bands but they play in 60s too

    The 60's were rather divided between early 60's, classic 60's and '70's precursors, like Led Zeppelin.
    For the absolutely 60's experience, then my top 5 would be:
    1) The Beatles well, obviously
    2) The Kinks better than the stones in the '60's.
    3) The Who Far more imagination than most groups
    4) The Stones Some good stuff, but up and down. Hit their peak in the 70's.
    5) Love An LA group that tends to get overlooked
    Bubbling under: The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Small Faces and Fairport Convention

      Very British, same as my views. Ray & Dave Davis of the Kinks, how many out there know them? Of course there're a lot of great groups and individuals. I have a library of almost all of them, in 12in big black vinyls since the 60s (not too many cassettes though), CDs & LDs (Laser Discs) since the 80s, and now in DVDs and Blu-rays, losing counts...

    God, I love this! The Beatles were, hands down, #1. They towered over The 1960s like a colossus. In fact, they're above categorizing. Stones #2? Yep! Led Zeppelin and The Who would have to be in there too. America's own Beach Boys would round out the list for me. I saw The Beatles whole career and saw Paul McCartney in concert in 1990. To me, The Beatles were a force of nature. The Stones were THE quintessential rock band, the archetype. They were #1 after 1970. Peace ... FoJ.

    The Beatles were called on when the world's first satellite network became operational and they wanted a PR event. John Lennon responded with "All You Need Is Love." It doesn't matter what keyboard warriors think 50 years later, at the time, the network people knew who to turn to. "Hard Day's Night" was written like that, after a request. I think that a band is pretty good when they can produce - on demand - material like that.

      justsmilehomie Huh? Zeppelin came out in '68, and released 3 albums before the 60's were out (2 albums in 1969). "Whole Lotta Love" was a big hit then. After playing the Fillmore East in January of '69, forget it. They were huge. Of course they went throughout the '70's and were amazingly popular for those who were a bit younger, but for those of us who were there at the beginning, they were also counted as a 60's band.

      Norman Smith Well if you are describing "Top bands" as opposed to "My favourite bands" then there has to be some criteria if want any level of objectvity. Record sales and number of number ones is at least measurable.

    • @RoobieRhoo
      @RoobieRhoo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, I understand what you're saying, kaiserbill. You're right, you need some criteria for "top" band. The Beetles were on top. Personally, not "my favorite band." Just something struck me when I read your comment, something about the relationship to sales and top bands who presumably play the best music. In my view, the best music puts a band on "top." But, as you imply, that's a very personal thing. I guess I am just not into bands being "commercialized" by sales. So, to label a band by sales rubs me differently, even though you're right about having some metric.

    • @papercup2517
      @papercup2517 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RoobieRhoo To be fair, Kaiserbill only included sales as one of at LEAST five significant criteria (see the 'etc..' at the end of his list) for identifying the 'best' bands/ music.
      If sales were the only criterion, obviously that would be completely inadequate and quite possibly misleading. You have to look at the whole thing.
      On the other hand, since there was such a plethora of extraordinary bands/ music in the 60s, it was a highly competitive field, and bands therefore really did have to be good to make any major/sustained impact in the charts. So in that era, I would argue that sales would be a relatively good criteria..
      In contrast, nowadays relatively forgettable rubbish can attract huge sales just because there's really nothing much else in the way of great talent around, to compete, plus marketing is so much slicker now than it ever was in the 60s. I think I'd agree with you that it's therefore a reasonable argument that sales WOULD be an unreliable measure of the 'best' in music, currently. :-)

    The five greatest rock bands of the 60s were: (1) the Beatles, (2) the Beatles, (3) the Beatles, (4) the Beatles, (5) the Beatles. I might have these in the wrong order.

      (After all one day The Beatles were at the 5 Tops on Billboard)

    I would never rank Crosby Stills and Nash so highly. Many bands from the era, which are considered relatively modest in their accomplishments, surpass them, including the Dave Clark Five, the Herman's Hermits and Jerry and the Pacemakers. (I like the brit invasion even when it's arguably goofy) And please, what about some of our stunning bands, like the Doors, the Animals, etc.

      Crosby Stills and Nash were way better than the ones you mentioned. Maybe you only like simple rock, which is ok but some people like Crosby Stills and Nash’s music. Don’t tell me that their music wasn’t good.

    Nice job! It is a hard choice to pick 5 groups from the 60s other than the Beatles and Stones that is, they were indeed giant. The early 60s mid 60s and late 60s where hugely different., I heard I want to hold your hand in 63. It and they were huge. I was in middle school at the time, and while there were certainly superb groups none beat the the beatles in the early to mid 60s for creativity joy and musical output.
