  • Less than six feet beneath a residential neighborhood in the English seaside town of Margate lies a mysterious underground cavern. Nicknamed Shell Grotto, the subterranean passages wind for 70 feet and are adorned by millions of seashells. Who built the cavern and for what purpose remain a mystery.

Notice heart symbol at 0:33. While symbols looking like this were known in ancient times, that kind of hearts weren't really used as symbols until late middle ages.

Can you imagine how beautiful it was when the shells still had color and luster?

I used to live there a few years ago and locals say it was a
    “Generational Witches cave”
Apparently it was used by local witches over time and they kept adding to it building the Shell Grotto.
There is also an alter room/sacrifice room.

Another one was found under Palatine Hill but it's unknown if there's any connection.

"But no one knows who built them, or why", instantly reminds me of the mini "Stone Henge" farce from "This is Spinal Tap"! 😂😂😂😂

Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view!"
Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam."
Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"

The Shell Grotto is a deeply inspiring place, and is regularly used for our Coven celebrations. See our photo page facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.759771764109029.1073741833.463202200432655&type=3.

It isn’t believed to have been constructed in the early 1800’s, that’s just when it was discovered . Nobody knows when it was truly built.

Not really. You can park but there isn't a dedicated car park. The roads are narrow but we managed to find a space with ease.

There are some hearts in the decorations.. so I think it was built from women for women. To go there without the brutal presence of men 😊
