Howard Hughes loved the Jetliner, wanted to buy it & used one of the prototypes as a toy for 6 months! But Canada missed the boat when the government wanted Avro to concentrate on the problems with the CF100 during Korean War & put the passenger jet on the back burner. Then 707 came out. The Bomarc missle was a failure & Canada should have resisted US pressure to buy them & used F101 Voodoos - should have finished the Arrow program for the jobs, prestige, research in Canada. Keeping Avro alive!
The only reason the Jetliner and Arrow were cancelled was the stupidity of CD Howe and the Canadian government. They even refused Howard Hughes who wanted to purchase several for TWA and National Air Lines. He even offered to hire Consolidated to do the construction and still CD Howe had the Jetliner and Arrow not only stopped, but destroyed. What a jerk! Canada would have been a world leader with these projects.
Ah,was curious, thanks very much.I think those manufacturers were all in the UK,at least back then.Along with Dehavilland, they had subsidiaries in Canada(obviously) and Australia.
The problem was that Jim Floyd could not call himself an engineer, in Ontario because he did not have the required documentation as he was a ex apprentice who had come up thru the ranks like many of us and no degree.
I continue to be drawn to the jetliner. And I do have to wonder - if the jetliner had gone into production and flown as far and as often as the DH Comet, would it also have suffered from metal fatigue? The early Comets disintegrated in flight because of this. No one had any idea that this was a problem so early in the jet age.
bikeracer6045 yep. My grandfather was an Orenda employee. Then later McDonell-Douglass after collapse of Avro. Retired there at 65, died six months after.
The US was helpful with the project, having supplied a B47 bomber for testing of the Iroquois engine. I read in a technical book that they were very interested in the design of the engine air intakes & the use of titanium for the engines. Soviets had spies in the factory & it has been said that the reason the US paid for the Avrocar flying saucer was to have access to the factory for the Arrow. Jetliner didn't have the window problem of the Comet but Can govt wanted Avro to only work on CF100.

The F4 phantom had the same air intakes and was in development at the same time
Feb 20th, 1959 the Avro Arrow was canceled. They need to make movies and documentaries about it, a nice IMAX one would be awsome. If anyone is interested there's tons of Arrow stuff out now, tons of shirts, a big ass die cast model that looks really awsome. Check them out at skywear.com
The Arrow project was cancelled underpressure of the USA, who did not have a plane comparable to the Arrow at that time. There was also some USA pressure to cacel this project because the USA were strong believers of installing a missile shield in Canada to stop potential enemie bombers. For a similar reason the Jetliner project was cancelled, both Britain (The Comet) and the USA were developing their first jetliners and both feared copmpition.

Hogwash......the f4 phantom was first flown in 1958 and was a Mach 2 + aircraft
That is incorrect. The US had nothing to do with the cancellation of the Arrow; second, the F-4 Phantom, F-106 Delta Dart, the A-5 Vigilante were planes that were better than the Arrow and in service with the United States Air Force.

Such a great documentary.
Wow, great video. Amazing to see the reception in NYC and all the other cities and wanting to buy them!
Call me weird but the Jetliner is a beautiful aircraft even today.
Sensible rounded windows!
True enough
She is a beauty.

Canada WAS an aviation leader at one point, pretty sad the state we're in now.

Bailing out Bombardier I guess you mean. True. As half my youth was spent around Bombardier products... Ski-doos. Then later sea-doos

Sorry for my thick typing fingers, it must be under pressure, cancel and competition
Lot of Me 262 design influence on this jetliner.
And that is NOT a derogatory observation.
Damn shame events conspired against this lovely airplane.

Not true. They don't look as pretty.
@Brera011 Bollocks. Avro is a British company!
Oh and your spelling is terrible.
