      GZ Broadcast There's no such thing as "the cloud", the games run on a computer somewhere and you simply send your controller input to that computer through your internet connection and the computer returns the video and audio.

      Geoff Paulsen That's funny because back in the day when this video was released, I didn't even know that thing even existed. Maybe it was because back then, I played on the Wii and Nintendo DSi more than watching TH-cam.

    • @geoffpaulsen
      @geoffpaulsen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yeah, It's really a shame. You can't even use the controller with a PC or anything.
      They basically bricked the hardware so nothing could be done with it.
      Many of us are still sore, since we "bought" games that we can no longer play.

    • @coolguy6233
      @coolguy6233 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Geoff Paulsen That could bring disappointment to anybody who probably bought it at a garage sale or an estate sale, these days, and brought it home, all of the sudden the service for this thing has been discontinued. What a waste of hardware and plastic. And this thing seems like it came out when Wii, PS3 and XBOX 360 were the main systems out there.

    • @CommonKTD
      @CommonKTD 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      All media is going this way, which I'm pretty glad about, at least digital not necessarily cloud based. I'm 18 years old, I don't think I've ever opened any of the physical copies of books I own, I only buy them to have, even though I listen to them all through audible (Audio book site). the only reason I still buy blu rays is because iTunes streaming isn't there yet. And as for physical games I own 2, Call of Duty for Xbox one, and MLB for PS4, and I only own those because I got them stolen on Craigslist for insanely cheap. But speaking of cloud based look at crackdown 3. All the buildings and objects on the map are all running on 3 different cloud servers, I can't even explain it but it looks super dope.

    • @TekMoliGy
      @TekMoliGy 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      CommonKTD
      yea luckily they are only doing the cloud based thing for the multiplayer on crackdown 3 so you will still be able to play single player when the servers get shut down. I can understand why people might like streaming and stuff more since i like netflix more than buying movies even though i won't actually get to own any of the movies i watch. I guess something about video games makes me like collecting them instead.

    Both. The one that hooks up to your TV is connected via your wireless router and if a game is laggy on your PC it will probably be as laggy or laggier via the TV box.
    You should download the software and try it on your PC first. It's free to try, you don't have to buy anything to play demos.

    Good review, I have had Onlive for about 2 months and don't have any complaints. I do not have a playpack subscription, I would probably only order it and keep it long enough to play any games I wanted there. Decent selection of games that is getting better, a big presence from 2K, THQ and Eidos with some Sega and Ubisoft as well.
    I use FIOS 25Mbps and the service is smooth. My only complaint is that the controller disconnects a lot, so I bought a Monoprice 15 ft mini USB & plug it in.

    I remember when we called "The Cloud" "The Internet." All it is, is a cross between the old XBand and TH-cam/Netflix. You're sending keystrokes over to their server to pass it onto the game and they simply record the video which they stream to you. Maybe I'm too old school, but I doubt this will ever replace the consoles.

    just tested this in the UK with a budget fujitsu laptop (its that bad that it barely runs valve games) and i have to say I am VERY impressed with the service. slowdown was minimal when testing games. This project is a leap forward in gaming. Lets face it, PS4 and the new Xbox are going to run by a download service. This is extremely similar, except you don't need a huge hard drive to store all the games. Its, quite simply, brilliant. works well with a wired 360 controller too :)

  • @Dant2142
    @Dant2142 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @kbhasikevin Onlive usually has PC ports, but it doesn't play them through a virtualized PC on the other end, it's just a massive server executing the programming code directly, not acting as a PC.

    @FPDood its remote playing. the system doesn't run the game its basicly just a modem and controller that allow you to play the game that is running on a server in some room somewhere. it's great for ppl that don't want to buy a powerful pc to play just a handful of games. but like he said you need a fast broadband connection if you don't want lag and constant DCs.

    @usquanigo It's true that it's not in the TOS that Valve will delete the DRM, but Gabe Newell said in a public statement that he would do that, and that it worked when they tested it. Oh, and I wasn't aiming to bend your comment, just to note a relevant topic.

  • @Jnmicter
    @Jnmicter 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @FPDood It's all dependent on your internet speed. You could run Just Cause 2 on a netbook, so long as you've got a really fast internet connection. If the internet's slow, the game will lag and play at around 240p, like it would for me.

    I don't see why everyone hate this so much. I use it because I have laptop 5 years old. I don't have money for console/pc, so I use onlive on laptop. I borrow game and play. I buy games only if there is big sale (just to be sure to not spend much money and than company breaks and I lose everything). Also great option is to buy the onlive system and you can play the games without pc or laptop on your TV !! That is awesome. Onlive won't destroy gaming it will always be alternative to usual gaming.

    What I dont understand is why don't they allow you to pay a monthly fee and be able to download the games from the service. Let's say you pay 20$ a month for 2 games at a time, you download the game and can play it off a harddrive using OnLive. It would work fine for people with slow connections and everybody would be happy...?

    @lloydy187 the box lets you play it on your tv without a pc basically. so it would just be like a console. But you can also plug a pc in to a tv and do it like that. I guess it would be great for the living room for people without a pc in there. Basically i think its another way of getting it.

    You mentioned that you wish Onlive had more retro titles available. Just what IS available in terms of classic gaming? I don't see Nintendo licensing any of their stuff on here. But are there other 8, 16, 32, and 64 bit games from other companies on this service? Genesis? TG-16? SMS?

  • @Nanofuture87
    @Nanofuture87 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Phrix89 I think the idea of OnLive is a good one, even if the technology is not quite there yet. Since it has a monthly service plan (the 'PlayPack Bundle'), I see it more as a streaming rental service rather than a place to buy games, and look how well streaming rental video has done. I don't think it will replace consoles or local PC gaming, but it could be a nice supplement to play a huge number of games without buying them. It could be the Netflix of the gaming world.

    My concerns about this service, as a PC gamer, are:
    Low resolution (720p depending on bandwidth), low graphic settings, lag, no mod community (!) -which can make old games come "alive", only 3 year support for games, and in some ways, game prices.
    But I do believe this is the future. As a Steam user (more than 100 titles), I hope that Valve will adjust itself to this, but right now I'm not sure that Onlive is the answer to high quality gaming.

    Only works properly through a wired connection! Wireless is hot and miss however fast your connection is! Even wired on 50mb I've had problems

    i dont think the fairies are that happy anymore that they cant share their games.
    EDIT: IT DEFINITELY WAS AHEAD OF ITS TIME.
    CLOUD GAMING IS COMING FULL FORCE AND WE WONT SEE ONLIVE THRIVE.
    Why? Sony swooped up their assets.
    also, segmented d-pad? huh. thought sony would have an aneurysm knowing a playstation design mainstay was present on a competitors system

    You're right, that's why I think a subscription based "flatrate" model for a big library of games is the way to go, like OnLives "Playpack" for 10$/m (granted, could be more games included). Just like with netflix, overall you benefit from this new system. We just have to let go of the classic collectors approach ;)

    @chadheck96 It is limited by the hardware that renders and streams the footage on the other end.
    And of course the bandwith.

    I've heard that there will be a model out next fall, but only for ones with wood, As the wood makes your cloud connection stronger it will not work with later model Intellivision's or Intellivision II's

    @boobidee No it's cloud gaming, which you can play on any computer and soon to be android and ipad. I don't get what you're implying, Steam didn't invent digital distribution.

    i actually think it looks pretty cool, though i would like the option of being able to download the game to some local hard drive or storage device so i can still play it even if i don't currently have an internet connection

    I have an extremely slow connection (compared to others; 6 mpbs), so Onlive won't work for me, but I would love to see this service continue in the future! It is ahead of its time...

    Oh this would be so perfect for the optical internet access we have here in Latvia - up to 500 Mbps if not more.

    @im1greatman Well actually, Onlive costs no money, you can download the 10mb application from their site and trial any game for half an hour as many times as you'd like.

    Buy once, play anywhere, no waiting to download or update your games. Instantly try and buy new ones. All your save games are kept in the cloud. Reinstall Windows, a 3 MB OnLive client and you're good to go!

    i think it will, especially as Internet connections get faster and faster. soon broadband will surpass the access speeds of HDD's so I can see all that stuff becoming a commodity and a service through the innerned.

    Pretty amazing technology. I have been playing around with this since December and if given the choice over getting a game that's available on PS3 vs. this, I definitely go for the onLive version. Buy once, play anywhere. I have 3 PCs that I'll use for onlive (one is a netbook) and 2 TVs.

    I love onlive. You can buy the games and you never have to worry about disc getting damaged. It's not like with ps3 you have limited space. The price is reasonable. You don't have to get up to change the game out. You don't have to pay a monthly fee unless you want too.You can buy the games outright. You can also watch other people play. I've even started buying my favorite movies that way with amazon instant videos. Tired of my movies getting ruined and having to rebuy them.

    @SoFknBrown this is a PC cloud game. you can only play with other Onlive players (i think) but definitely not XBOX of PS3.
