LAPD's Boot Camp for Troubled Teens

  • In 2009, over 30,000 crimes were committed by teenagers in the city of Los Angeles. That is one in five kids who committed a crime involving gangs, drugs or prostitution. Unfortunately, due to complex circumstances, many parents do not have the skills or resources it takes to keep their child from a life of crime.
The Juvenile Impact Program (JIP) is a Los Angeles based 12-week boot camp style program run by LAPD officers for troubled youth. The JIP is the only boot camp of its kind that is entirely funded by private contributions through the Los Angeles Police Foundation and offered at no cost to families in need.
The JIP program seeks to reverse negative behavior in defiant teens by offering a structured educational curriculum under the supervision and guidance of certified teachers that includes physical training, classroom instruction, guest speaking engagements, and one-on-one time with police officers.
Unlike most other teen boot camp programs, JIP has a mandatory parenting course designed to help them deal with the many challenges teens present. Through group therapy support, parents learn ways to discipline without yelling or abuse, to build and enhance their child's self-esteem, and to develop a strong sense of responsibility in their child. Other issues addressed are domestic violence, and drug, alcoholism and gang recognition.
Since its inception in 1993, JIP has positively redirected the lives of over 10,000 teenagers that have graduated from the program. With its proven 80% success rate, JIP graduates have gone on to be successful in school, have improved relationships with parents and make more disciplined and responsible choices in their lives.

Love to see parent's taking some action. My parents sent me to Pacific Quest, a wilderness therapy program for troubled teens and it was my answer!

I was a terror and yelling at me never helped. I went to a wilderness therapy camp, Pacific Quest, and that affected my whole life. I think it was because they respected me and gave me responsibility. It worked for me!

Thank You Los Angeles Police Dept! I've driven a school bus for 20 yrs and its tough seeing so many kids fall thru the cracks because of grinding poverty, no father in the house, drug use etc! Please don't stop! Every child deserves a chance! Thanks!!!

Glad LAPD is doing this. A lot of today's youth are rampant because they don't get enough discipline, so they think they can do whatever they want. Whether it be drugs, sex, or gang violence; today's children and teens need to be exposed to the dangers of what they do, and at the same time, understand that their actions are wrong, and learn to move on to better themselves. I've been to a boot camp myself, and I'd say I'm now a better person than I was before the camp.

Teaching parents to communicate better is key here. The child boot camp part, isn't the 80% success rate. That's just indoctrination to standing in line in a corrupt society. Ask any servicemen, the boot camp part isn't what makes you a good (in my case) Marine. It's once the pressures off and you realize how the military REALLY is, that people shine. This is mainly just theater for the parents and participants.

Watch videos of Daniel Siegel explaining why teenagers are overly sensitive even for little things. It's because of thousands of years of evolution of the human brain that developed that way. Actress Goldie Hawn created with experts as Daniel Siegel program in the US and in Europe for kids in schools where they learn how the brain works, they learn mediation, metacognition, breathing techniques, talking with classmates with empathy, positive psychology so the kids with bipolar disorder, autism, ADHD, or other problems learn how to calm down without using medications. She said one of three kids in the US is medicated and many kids are misdiagnosed. The program is also for parents and teachers because they also need to learn how to be more present and happy. She started this program 18 years ago. She said that their research found out that thanks to this program crime decreased in cities. Dr. Joe Dispenza and Bruce Lipton also talk about the human brain and kids' brains and about mediation, breathing techniques. Boot camp is probably also good because of learning discipline and exercise but its good to also to learn the science bout human brain and other techniques.

Well my bootcamp was my parents literally kicking my ass! With belts, shoes, electrical cords or what ever they found nearby. I never had a chance to talk back, roll my eyes, lie, steal or disrispect authority. This is why Im thankful and proud of who I am today. Thank to my parents! This is why these days you cant punish kids like old day and thats why youth is the way it is now. This is why Im having trouble with with of my 11 yr old, just because he cant get punished, and taking away electronics for a month its alot worse because he just wants to break everything in the house. Just because he doesnt have anything yo do. Some people are shocked that I have two pitbulls because they say its dangerous!? And I say I rather have 1000 pitbulls than one disrespectful human being!

Is that a six year old? In the middle of the line? Two of them, actually, because they're too short to be the rest of the ages (except 5 or 4). What the hell is wrong with parents nowadays? They're sending six and seven year olds to boot camp? Why don't they just talk to them about why what they did is wrong? Child abuse at it's finest.

They are a lot nicer and kind to the little kids since they are developing. It’s the older kids that they yell at because they know better yet they still disrespect authority and the law. You can’t talk nicely to a teenager and expect good behavior sometimes. There is nothing thicker than the skull of a teenager.
