Nice bike rack, just put it on my 4Runner today. One design flaw I noticed after install, and I noticed at 1:33 into your video, how you addressed the issue. The two vertical posts that fold down when you're not hauling a bike can swing freely and hit the back of your vehicle when the rack is in the upright position. There is no instruction on how to secure them in the manual and there is no built-in mechanism to secure them. I see your remedy is to use the wheel-chock fastener to secure the posts, I've used the Velcro strips that came with the rack to do the job; however, I'm not happy using the Velcro as it will wear out over time. I might try your method, or I might use bungee cords to secure the posts. Haven't decided yet, but it just seems that there should be some method provided, such as a locking mechanism that would hold those posts in place.
@@scotthardesty - BTW…I learned from one of their customer service reps that the Young Electric racks will soon be marketed under the Cravot brand. The MATE R = CyberRack E2. Not sure when but, when you see it, you’ll know they’re the same. 😊
I've been looking at the Vevor aluminum dirt bike rack TD-1004-08. It's around $250 but is rated for 600 lb. I'll do some more research on this rack as well.
I had a dirt bike rack as my first bike rack. Having to use cargo straps and all that got old real quick. When I got my SOLE rack from Young Electric I got rid of that dirt bike rack and have noticed these are much easier to operate.
Well made video. Unfortunately, I can't say much for Young Electric. I bought their 200 lb. rated rack for two bikes and both clamps for the tire hoops bent on first trip. I called numerous times with no reply back to me. Was fortunate amazon took it back. I have pictures and video but respectful of your channel. I'm not saying this rack is bad because never had this one. Young's customer service is non-existent as far as I'm concerned.
Sorry to hear about that. I have had no issues with me SOLE rack and with the improvements on this one, I don't expect to have any issues like you. I can understand your dismay.
I've heard nothing but good about the rack you reviewed on FB groups I belong. Why this company ignored my messages and emails I haven't a clue. I only know a product is only as good as the company which stands behind it. As always, your reviews are honest and I've watched them all. Hopefully Young has a winner with this one.
I’m sorry to hear about your experience. I recently called Young Electric about a replacement part for my Mate-R and had an exceptional Customer Support experience. The original part was not defective but somehow mysteriously disappeared from my rack. I do leave it on my vehicle full time. The friendly agent created a support ticket and asked me to email a photo of a duplicate part to confirm exactly what it was that I needed, They offered to send a replacement free of charge if I would just cover the shipping charges! I received an invoice for the shipping fees the next day, paid through secure payment, and now the part is in transit.
I got my new rack but it didn’t come with the ramp. I sent them a message about this we will see. I’ve heard their customer service sucks . I put a locking pin for my receiver but keep in mind if you do this the locking pin will probably destroy the original pin threads
I’m getting ready to buy this, but I don’t see a link to the locking pin you mentioned.. great video btw! Been back and forth with several brands trying to find one for our RV, and one easier on us to load and unload the bikes from, though I have to admit seeing you do it without one made more sense than the way we probably would’ve done it lol!
I have just ordered this bike rack after seeing your review. I also purchased the hitch lock that you recommended. I see how that lock can secure the rack to the hitch but can't a thief just remove the bolt from the part of the rack that folds the rack up? Am I missing something. Thanks for your excellent videos.
I hadn't thought about that but without the connecting tube the car, the rack is no good. You would need 3 guys to remove that and lift both the bike and rack onto the back of a pickup truck to steal it. I think the odds of that are extremely low.
Scott, any idea for a light kit and perhaps a license plate mount for when traveling to states that are more restrictive? The light kit is more critical imo for safety
Hmmmm... I have not thought about that. Since I mostly using it Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, I have not had issues with any law enforcement. It's a great idea, just not something I have added to my plate yet.
Nice video I learned a few things before attempting to install a hitch and rack on my car..I do admit seeing the bikes bouncing around is kinda scary tho😩
Hey Scott, is the stock hitch pin just the basic type that you insert and then it threads into the Mate-R's post that slides into the receiver tube? Is that good enough to keep it from rattling? From the marks on your hitch receiver tube it looks like you have used a Hitch Tightener/Anti-Rattle Stabilizer Clamp at some point ($10 part). Does that clamp make a big difference when your hitch pin tightening method is just that threaded type hitch pin?
The stock pin is good enough to keep it from rattling. Works just like the I used but doesn't have the ability to lock it to the vehicle. So no need to get a different one to keep the bikes from rattling, it already comes with the rack. I just like to use the other one to lock it to the car. You don't need the extra clamp, it would be a waste of money.
The rack is heavy since it is so solid and it does take effort to get it on and off the vehicle. I am able to stand it up and rest it on the rack which is nice. I am pretty sure I mention the weight of this rack in the video.
If you only have one bike, I would get the single version of this rack, but yes, it will hold it ease. th-cam.com/video/H-BCvRgnOAA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Ly0bHU-8dPKSoGf3
I wish someone made a more detailed video of how to put this together. Young has one but it’s only 1 minutes long which is a lot shorter then it probably takes to put it together
I show you how to assemble the SOLE version of this rack, which is basically the same way to assemble the MATE-R. That's why I didn't show how to assemble the MATE-R.
No the rack does not tilt down. And I do not believe they have a lice and light attachment although you can find those on Amazon pretty easily. I use this rack a lot and I not had an issue with feeling like I need to add stuff to the back of this rack.
I have used this rack for over 1,000 miles and no issues. Most cars have that 3rd brake light that is higher. Maybe because of that, cops don't mess with it.
Did they add the feature to be able to tilt the bikes back to allow access to the rear hatch of the SUV while the bikes are still on the rack? Also, what is the max wheelbase bike that can fit? Will the new Wired Cruiser work on this rack?
No, it does not tilt down. I believe it is 50" just like my SOLE rack. My cargo bike is long. It fits so I imagine the Wired Cruiser will work as well.
@@scotthardesty Wired Cruiser is listed as 51.1". Do you think that's close enough to still work? And thanks for reviewing some more affordable gear for those of us that don't want to spend top dollar for everything!
I've got a truck with a 3" receiver hitch, using a reducer down to a 2" hitch. Can this rack be used ? I notice that you don't use the bolt, you use the locking pin, so if I get a compatible locking pin for the 3" hitch, it should work ?
I didn't even know they made 3" hitches. Because of that, I have zero answers for you. Sorry, I just don't want to tell you something will work when it doesn't. I can tell you that the locking pin for the rack is only long enough for 2" receivers.
@@scotthardesty in your opinion, how important is it to have the threaded pin ? Does it help that much ? I notice the rack still wobbles quite a bit for you.
