Beware the Changing River Mouth Launch

  • During this transition zone between the wet and dry seasons, our few remaining navigable river mouths can play havoc with your launch plans. The tide pulse and the flood pulse are busy hammering it our right now. The tide pulse will prevail as the dry season comes upon us. But don't trust the flood pulse in such an angry mood right now!
El Nino has threatened to calm things down this year. So we are hoping that this little spat of rain, is going to the be the last significant downpour of the wet season.
On occasion, I have launched out of the Umzimkulu, only to return to find the passage impossible. Walls of water. Or it just closes completely. The only option is nearby Shelley Beach. Which then involved hitch hiking back to Port Sheptone. To fetch the trailer and a 4WD vehicle to retrieve the boat with!
At the moment, the new rains have brought down new brown water. A distinctly different shade from the existing body of water that had developed by mixing with salt of the last few days. This new brown water is contricted to the middle of the river as the salty water is pressed towards the banks.
There is heaps of fish activity as there always is when the rivers come down. Dorsals darting all over the place. Visibly enjoying the conditions. What they are is anyone's guess...
Here in Port Shepstone (umzimkuluadren...) the sardines are about to arrive!

Hi . On this subject . You should show the people some historical photos of that area . I newer knew that there used to be a harbor where old wooden sailing ships used to visit .
