  • Great Little Trains of Wales #1:
In this first part of this series of videos, we take a look at the Welshpool and Llanfair light Railway in mid-wales.
This 2ft 6inch gauge line runs for 8 and 1/2 miles from the town of Welshpool to Llanfair Caerinion through some beautiful Welsh countryside. Opened in 1903, the line was originally operated by the Cambrian Railway before being absorbed into the GWR in 1923. Freight traffic lingered through BR days until 1956 when the line was closed, however the preservationists re-started the line 1963 and the line is now operating at their original length.
On this particular day, their orange timetable was in operation with two trains running including a vintage mixed set. Kerr Stuart 0-6-2 'Joan' and line original Beyer Peacock loco 'Countess' were both in action.
The sun was in and out all afternoon but with plenty of time left in the day, there was lots to see and do as we explored this lesser known narrow gauge railway. Hope you enjoy!

With its varied rolling stock, steep gradients, and pastoral surroundings, this line is very different from most Welsh lines, but it has an eccentric charm all its own. If you love the narrow gauge, don't miss it!

I was at the Welshpool and Llanfair Railway on the very same day as you; having drove from Hampshire, I stopped there enroute to Snowdonia. Having arrived home today, footage from my visit will be coming soon.

Good camera work with some atmospheric shots of the train going through the Welsh countryside on a beautiful summer's day. Thanks for uploading.

That's a very charming line. I love those Austrian and Hungarian coaches with the balconies.

Very nice video, you captured the scenery very nice, liked the shot of 823 crossing the bridge and going past what looks like a farm, very nice.
I haven't been to this railway before, but hope to over the next week! Can I ask how come 823 turned during the day? Do they have a turntable somewhere?

No turntable, just travelling in different directions up and down the line

@@southernsteamproductions2460 ah right, I've had a closer look now, do they shunt the wagons around at either end then?
