YOU HAVE TO CHECK IN WITH US ONLINE IN ORDER TO PLAY THIS SINGLE-PLAYER OFFLINE GAME” F Sega for that. I won’t buy any game that can’t work PERMANENTLY AND FOREVER. I refunded it so quickly even though it was dirt cheap on sale. Will buy it if they eventually take it out. Otherwise I’ll just emulate the Switch Release on my HTPC Console for free until they either remove Denuvo or empress or someone takes it out. F Sega.
I just realized what makes 06 undeniably Adventure 3 In adventure 1 we get Sonic as Super Sonic In adventures 2, we got shadow, and at the end we got both of their super forms In 06, we got Silver, and the three of them use their super forms So for an Adventure 4, we would need yet another new character and 4 super forms at the ending
If we get a SA3, I hope we get something between SA1 and SA2. I think the three gameplay styles of 2, Speed, Mech and Treasure hunting, work really well, and as long as they keep Speed as the primary gameplay, I would love to see them all return. But I would also like to see levels reused for different characters, but as a post game option. Like after you beat the game, you can replay Sonics levels with Tails to try to break them, find secrets and speed through even faster. Or Knuckles levels could be played through with Rouge/Tikal/Chaos, but they have different upgrades that change where the emeralds can be hidden. Mech levels could be like SA2 in the first run, but you could come back with Gamma under a time limit and need to hit more enemies to gain time again. Big can be an ultra optional hidden mode just for the meme if you really wanted it.
Your random comment about Tails randomly making a fake chaos emerald struck me as odd, since I always felt like it was a natural throughline to the background plot with Tails studying and using the Chaos Emeralds. Adventure 1 you see him gradually make improvements to his plane using a real emerald, which coupled with the logic that Tails studied the energy wavelengths of emeralds to detect them, and that Chaos Drives were a commonplace technology (remnants of ARK technology, which kind of helps reinforce Eggman's random suspicion too) it's not out of nowhere that he could develop a fake one.
Eggman's suspicion isn't random. in the cutscene before Cosmic wall, he looked at the screen with chaos emerald readings and went "wait, why are there 8 of them now?"
This video really resonates with me. I'm a rookie game developer, and Sonic was my favorite series when I was kid. I never had access to 06, but I always wanted to play it. I was shocked when I found out later how hated and messy it was. Now, my relationship with the series is full of mixed feelings. I still replay SA2 every year or so as a "guilty pleasure", and I spend a lot of time thinking about what draws me to it. At the same time, I wouldn't be too harsh on modern Sonic. Frontiers has some really rewarding level design and boss fights, the open world design just needs to be honed. I hope that some day, I can make a sonic game akin to SA2. But personally, I would make it so that the gameplay is awesome, but the cutscenes are meant to be laughed at. I think no matter what, the premise of sonic having an emotional/cinematic story is a bit ridiculous to anyone other than kids. I wouldn't want to disparage sonic, but rather display a sense of self-awareness at how cheesy it is. I think 3D Sonic could be true to its beginnings, while also having a modern context applied to it, and allowing people to laugh and lean into the fun. I'd love to know what you think.
I fell out of sonic games with shadow the hedgehog then sonic heroes was the nail in the coffin for me. I think they knew they made a mistake adding chao garden as for my friends, family and I it was the main game with the story being a minigame to the chao garden. Haven't been interested in a sonic game since, despite the first games I played being sonic cd or the originals for genesis.
@@Alderoth same, like they had a poll of what was the fans favorite minigame of all time and out of 5 choices it was chao garden with 75%, then they brought back the chao garden director for sonic frontiers. haven't played a sonic game in years but I still check for SA3 now and again.
I watched the shadow portion of the video and realizing we might have a come back with shadow x sonic generations with doom being in shadow’s play through and back as the villain…hopefully and just maybe it will break the curse of shadow the hedgehog but also pay tribute to his game with all it’s flaws it still makes me smile when I play even with the edge and cheesy stuff involved. I just know 2024 is the year of shadow and im proud to say I’ve been waiting a long time for this.
Speaking to the part in SA1 about Tails not working, I think he should have lead more into puzzle solving like Amy. Flight makes it easy to get value out of puzzles that have more verticality, and it kinda feels in character since they decided to take Tails down the the smart boi route. Use this to transition him from trying to keep up with Sonic via speed to keeping up in different ways.
This may be apocryphal but I remember hearing a story about how on the original dream cast version, there was a fishing peripheral that was for another capcom game that was compatable with the bigs the cat sections, which also may have something to do why they are the way they are.
I feel like if there's one game that warrants a remake more than every other game on the planet, it's Sonic 06. You'd have just about zero expectations, and no way of making a worse experience than the source material. If Sega did it right, it'd be brand reparation, and the internet's reaction would be legendary. Game journalists would lose so much power. Heck, if they really wanted to get crazy, then story-wise, it could just all take place in the new timeline without Solaris. Eggman would definitely find any new excuse to crash the festival, and we could potentially get an explanation as to why Silver would go on to keep showing up in games even when the Bad Future that gave him reason to go to the past was erased.
Yes. I agree mostly with everything in this video and I don't like Frontiers. I hoped that at least Shadow will play like Adventure/P-06 in the future, but no, I saw boost in trailer so it's propably gonna be cyberspace gameplay. Go and try out Spark the Electric Jester 3. Also this Rolling Rascal game looks interesting.
So this is the “early” 3d sonic games? Are there plans for later games, like storybook saga, generations, lost world etc? Really hoping so, these games just get more interesting and i love hearing your takes
if he makes a sonic 06 video he better include project 06. it may not be a retrospective then but its the definitive way to play if you want to actually enjoy the game
3:53:14 I wouldn’t be bothered if they brought back Green Hill and Chemical Plant in a racing game. Only because Chemical Plant never been in one, and Green Hill hasn’t been in one since Sonic Drift 1.
I really enjoyed this. My love for Sonic never fades away and i'm from the same generation as you. My first Sonic game was Sonic Adventure 2 on the Sega Dreamcast and to this day thanks to that game (which is still my favourite but still prefer the Dreamcast version) i will be forever a fan. My favourite era is 1998-2005 with Sonic X and i can proudly say that i almost completed all the games 100%( excluding the boom games, the mario crossovers and a tons of mobile games like sonic cafe) I always lie to myself that Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Advance 3 was the ending of the series and from Sonic 06 and Sonic Rush are reboot. The only thing that carries over from 06 is that Shadow now a G.U.N agent(it was implied in Expert mode) I to this day collect japanese physical releases from this era because it gives me so much joy(Sonic X too) The sad thing about Sonic 06 that when the game had it's first demo presentation, everyone was so hyped even those who never played sonic before. Like how the daytime changes through the level is also really cool that was scrapped in the final for some reason. I believe Elise was planned to be a "what if we carried over our original idea that instead of Amy, Sonic has a human girlfriend(Madonna) as a part of his 15th anniversary celebration." You could unlock that concept art in Sonic Gems Collection(2004) But while madonna was more american cartoon style,Elise is a lot more anime influenced. Still they went too far with that kiss even if at the end it never happened. I did complete the game 100% and thanks to the town missions like the apple one,i mostly hated it. S ranking all the bosses is a real chore. You have to collect all the rings and avoid any hit. That's the key. I love SA,SA2,Heroes and i do like Shadow but could not say the same to 06. But i do like the level themes they were going with.
1:13:28 No, I don’t think it would give me that feeling. I already don’t think the short length and it being small is as bad as any of the space levels, but in the opposite sense.
It's been forever since ive played all of adventure one, and i never knew the level design was so similar to the classics, because the classics are my favorites!
I've only recently gotten into the series with Sonic Frontiers, so I feel like for the purposes of this video I would be considered a series outsider. And my experience with '06's legacy was "it's an ambitious game with a really interesting story that could have been done well if given more time, but the gameplay sucks because of how many glitches there are. Good thing Project 06 is fixing that last part!" Likewise, my understanding of the Werehog game from friends is "the daytime stages are some of the best stages to ever grace 3D Sonic but by god are the nighttime stages bad." (I've never seen people talking good or bad about the story). Maybe your perception of the reception of the games is affected by *being* a longtime Sonic fan, so you would have talked with other like-minded fans and seen the perversion of '06's legacy within that group of people. But you claimed that series outsiders have a warped perception of '06, and then offered an alternative take which you felt was more accurate. And, as such an outsider, I wanted to inform you that your alternative take *is* what I hear. Of course, I am watching your video two years after its release (for posterity: the video I'm commenting on is a compilation of prior videos, but I wanted to acknowledge the original timeframe). Maybe this change in how outsiders like me sees Sonic '06 is brought about *by* Project 06 and/or your video.
This is a stretch, but Team Chaotic fights Team Dark because the one power plant level has you destroying Eggman robots, and the Chaotics probably mistake Omega for one, or at least that would've made more sense
All things considered, this videos ending worked when the 06 video was released, but this week, after it became clear SEGA are now pandering to Adventure era fans nostalgia via both the upcoming third movie and the Sonic X Shadow Generations remaster (both of which are clearly leaning back into Shadow's backstory), not to mention how Frontiers as a whole ended up being closest in tone and scope to an Adventure title (especially with the Final Horizon DLC), it just leaves the ending falling flat. It seems like the Sonic you loved, who you presumed dead is coming back.
25:54 funny that you compare Mario to sonic here because in super Mario odyssey, Nintendo did the very thing sonic did and introduced ultra realistic ps2 looking humans in new donk city. What are your thoughts on that might I ask?
The amount of possible of secret areas and hidden paths even the unintentional ones in Adventure are what I miss from the modern Sonic games, they just focus on the boost to win, when what makes you feel like a speedster is how can use that speed to skip portions of the level kinda like a speedrun. The closest I got to that feeling was with a game called Neon White.
Try Spark the Electric Jester 3. It has Sonic Adventure style gameplay with plenty of options to take secret faster routes if you're skilled enough at the game. Even faster than SA too, and not in a bad way.

I just don't like a lot of recent Sonic games. It's not that deep. I have zero problem with people who do. It sounds like a lot of projection.
I had the exact same thing. Me and my friends loved Sonic and were completely oblivious to the internet hating him at the time.
1:09:54 I've admittedly never seen such a well-rounded review on the mech stages, and you didn't even mention the beeping! Usually most just go as far as to say 'oh the beeping's so annoying and why is this sonic game forcing me to play in a stupid mech?!' so bravo.
Watching this reminds me why I love the early Sonic Games, especially Sonic Adventure 1&2 and yes I did like the Sonic Adventure Hub Worlds, I liked to listen to their soundtracks and relax.
All I want is a new 3D Sonic Game WITHOUT DENUVO!
Was enjoying Sonic Frontiers for the hour or so that I played it, came back from vacation ready to play more now that I had finished the game I was playing to be met with “YOU CAN’T PLAY THIS GAME OFFLINE! YOU HAVE TO CHECK IN WITH US ONLINE IN ORDER TO PLAY THIS SINGLE-PLAYER OFFLINE GAME”
F Sega for that.
F Sega.
I just realized what makes 06 undeniably Adventure 3
In adventure 1 we get Sonic as Super Sonic
In adventures 2, we got shadow, and at the end we got both of their super forms
In 06, we got Silver, and the three of them use their super forms
So for an Adventure 4, we would need yet another new character and 4 super forms at the ending
I just wanted to note how the music syncs with the springs in 58:34 . That was brilliant
Look into Spark the Electric Jester 3. I'm sure you'd enjoy its speed and variety
"Can you imagine Generations with a proper story?"
You know, with the new Shadow stuff on that remaster, we might legitimately be getting that.
one of the best video essay(s plural) that I've ever seen!!
These games would have been peak if they had been structured more like the first three games
0:30 - 0:36 The most relatable thing I've ever heard!
1:00:26 Wait. Sigma Alpha 2. S A 2. Sonic Adventure 2. How have I never noticed that until just now?
Right there with you
2:54:49
Does anyone else get a little Aether Paradise feel from this song with some of the instruments?
Aether Paradise is from Pokémon Sun & Moon
I completely feel you on playing some sonic music on runs. I love playing seaside hill and city escape from Heroes and SA2 on my runs
This is definitely a “have nothing better to do” type video. I’ll save it for a rainy day.
Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 are still some of my favorite games ever! 💙
you are very good at explaining sonic 06, not much more to say, great job! got everything about the characters right
I fell out of sonic games with shadow the hedgehog then sonic heroes was the nail in the coffin for me.
I think they knew they made a mistake adding chao garden as for my friends, family and I it was the main game with the story being a minigame to the chao garden.
Haven't been interested in a sonic game since, despite the first games I played being sonic cd or the originals for genesis.
Sonic Heroes killed it for me too. Ive been waiting for SA3 for decades lmao
Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast was my first game ever and Sonic Heroes is one of my favorite games ever.
Apparently the Project 06 thing is really good. Have you tried it, @KingK ?
What's the name of the song playing in the background from 2:00-2:25?
Playing project 06 on my Steam deck. It works great if anyone else wants to try and great having 06 on the go
@55:30 I know I can't be the only one who hears Arin Hanson screaming and Dan Avidan losing his shit laughing as this track plays
Ya know. After watching this again, I think I'mma go revisit Sonic Adventure 2. It's been a while.
The music was timeless.
City Escape has gotta be top 10 video game tracks of all time.
My thoughts on these games:
SA1: Great
SA2: Only surpassed by Unleashed
Heroes: Really good
Shadow: Never played
06:06/10
SA2 & Unleashed 🔛🔝
I think brief is a bit of an understatement
Honestly i just want another chao garden
06 has the best ost
How did he know I would watch it all again this man can see the future
This may be apocryphal but I remember hearing a story about how on the original dream cast version, there was a fishing peripheral that was for another capcom game that was compatable with the bigs the cat sections, which also may have something to do why they are the way they are.
At 18 min it sounds like silhouette from Naruto lmao. Great vid love the sonic video.
Sonic Adventure 1 was really just a Yoko Taro game before Yoko Taro games existed
4 hours of the king? Let's go! SWOUP
Cant wait to fall asleep watching this tonight!
Silhouette by Kana-boon is now canonically the Sonic Adventure theme song. You can't change my mind.
There is a sizable portion of people who think the earth is flat, never listen to the sizable portion uncritically over the majority.
55:29 Maybe it's because of GameGrumps, but I laughed so hard when I heard the Big the Cat fishing theme 😂
Another aeesome video!
I would love to see your thoughts on unleashed. That game is my favorite Sonic game by far
3:53:14
I wouldn’t be bothered if they brought back Green Hill and Chemical Plant in a racing game.
My favourite era is 1998-2005 with Sonic X and i can proudly say that i almost completed all the games 100%( excluding the boom games, the mario crossovers and a tons of mobile games like sonic cafe)
I always lie to myself that Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Advance 3 was the ending of the series and from Sonic 06 and Sonic Rush are reboot. The only thing that carries over from 06 is that Shadow now a G.U.N agent(it was implied in Expert mode)
I to this day collect japanese physical releases from this era because it gives me so much joy(Sonic X too)
The sad thing about Sonic 06 that when the game had it's first demo presentation, everyone was so hyped even those who never played sonic before. Like how the daytime changes through the level is also really cool that was scrapped in the final for some reason. I believe Elise was planned to be a "what if we carried over our original idea that instead of Amy, Sonic has a human girlfriend(Madonna) as a part of his 15th anniversary celebration." You could unlock that concept art in Sonic Gems Collection(2004)
But while madonna was more american cartoon style,Elise is a lot more anime influenced.
Battle 2 is like the basis of which I think all modern sonic games should take. There is no reason why this formula hasn’t been perfected
1:13:28
No, I don’t think it would give me that feeling. I already don’t think the short length and it being small is as bad as any of the space levels, but in the opposite sense.
I'm just glad I'm not the only one that's obsessed with sonic adventure 😂
Four hours of Sonic x Shadow!?!? That's hot
1:12:19
I actually like Security Breach. It doesn’t take forever to flip the switches and the level is very quick and small.
Good thing Project 06 is fixing that last part!"
Likewise, my understanding of the Werehog game from friends is "the daytime stages are some of the best stages to ever grace 3D Sonic but by god are the nighttime stages bad." (I've never seen people talking good or bad about the story).
Maybe this change in how outsiders like me sees Sonic '06 is brought about *by* Project 06 and/or your video.
adventure 2 is the best sonic game thats has been released. 6 characters. slapping soundtracks, good level designs mostly, and chao garden.
Kingdom Valley in 06 perfectly encapsulates what 06 could have been if Sonic Team had more time to finish the game.
This is a stretch, but Team Chaotic fights Team Dark because the one power plant level has you destroying Eggman robots, and the Chaotics probably mistake Omega for one, or at least that would've made more sense
BABE WAKE UP
KING K DROPPED THE 4h SONIC ADVENTURE REVIEW
SA3 can still happen, but it need to be a fan project. Sonic Team doesn't know how to make the magic anymore.
If kk and bick debated Sonic Frontiers with Josh as the moderator, I could die happy.
A lot of the glitches from Heroes mostly happens in the PS2 version. 2nd PC & Xbox. And 3rd Gamecube.
Even faster than SA too, and not in a bad way.
lol that intro. I have watched quite a few of your vids a bit more than once.
My favorite video game soundtracks of all time are from these games
Kinda curious on your thoughts on update 3 and the shadow trailer
Gotta go moderately quickly
