    I remember the day Miles Davis came to Munich with his band and I didn't go. Instead I was in a jazz club for a jam of local musicians. Later that evening a dude came in with his sax and joined the band. After a while everybody stopped playing, only he went on and whenever I thought now he has to stop, he found a way to make it even wilder, faster, louder ... I never had heard anything like it before ... and I had no idea who was playing. Only later I learned that Kenny Garrett wanted to play some more after the concert with Miles and found the Unterfahrt. I was glad I was in the jam session and not in the concert.

      Riveting solo and a great band - and perhaps THE defining take of Human Nature as a jazz/funk piece. Must be heard in full - this is just the last third of the take.

    A great solo on so many levels. It developed a story, used all 12 tones musically, showed how all minor scales could be used, used motivic development, and most importantly showcased an individual voice on the sax.

    I watched this Paris concert on my parent's VCR maybe a 1000 times.
    It's not shown in this video but Kenny's solo starts earlier and for some reason his mic screws up, so he's kind of frustrated and he has to cut it short. Techs remove the mic and when Miles realize it, he walks to Kenny and hand him his trumpet so Kenny can continue his solo thru Mile's own mic... Kind of a symbol, right?
    And the rest is history to me: This solo builds up to the moon and the technical constrains seems to motivate Kenny to push even further.

    True, it may looks like Miles has a nonchalant look on his face but his actions express what he thought of Kenny's solo, the embrace and holding Kenny's name above his own head illistrates how he felt. We haven't yet caught up to Miles musically, he was a true musical genius, a master of the negative space in music.

    • @louise_rose
      @louise_rose ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yes, a magnificently realized piece - and it's improvised (they never did this one the same way twice, although the general curve with some sort of crescendo and a sax solo was fairly well established by 1988--89). This is a track of sculptural beauty and, in my eyes, THE defining version of Human Nature as a jazz/funk piece. I've watched and listened to it on the dvd scores of times.

      Yes, absolutely. he is amazing throughout this show (Miles in Paris, Nov 1989), and he and the rhythm section really shape the dynamics and pacing to frame Miles' and Kenny's solos. This is beautifully paced, as his drumming grows heavier, louder, faster and more determined.

  • @saxefoner
    @saxefoner 15 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Part of what makes this solo great is the rhythm section, solid and building up the way it did. It was an inspiration for Kenny. And Miles just being there, holding the mike, chewing gum. Fantastic.

    • @louise_rose
      @louise_rose ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, at first the drummer holds back carefully (this is just the last third of the entire track) and then he helps build up the volume and punch. Notice how he begins to use the crash cymbal with sharp, loud strikes to punctuate the funky beat, more and more frequent as the tension rises...

  • @andradas9688
    @andradas9688 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    4:09-4:15 always gets me by its sheer emotional intensity. A very short passage, but filled with complexity and expressivity. Garrett's ability to take the solo through a fantastic journey of emotions is uncanny.

    • @rich4444hrsm
      @rich4444hrsm ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know which tone of the scale he uses, but one of the cool things I've heard in many Garrett solos is that when he goes to "step out" of the chord progression he'll pick a note, half step up, and then stick in that key. I learned that is a cool way to step out, just play a half step up chord, but it is cool how he transitions by just hanging on that initial note.

    • @louise_rose
      @louise_rose ปีที่แล้ว

      The breakout at 2:20-2:41 is a key moment of the entire track for me; when the key, tempo and rhythm change like that, it beautifully captures the sense of liberation: go, GO! The whole piece (this is just the second half) has a sculptural beauty that's quite riveting.

    • @andradas9688
      @andradas9688 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@louise_rose very well said. Exactly, the "GO" moment is like a liberation. First time I heard this passage it was like going for a magical journey. Yes, the entire version is even more dramatic because of the microphone issue. Garrett almost gave up soloing after the first couple of mic failures, but Miles saying "it's your night". And indeed it was Garrett's night. Btw, I think you mean 3:20 as the liberation moment.

    • @louise_rose
      @louise_rose ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andradas9688 I didn't even notice the mike issue until it was pointed out (after I had watched the dvd a dozen times) but I think there's also a symbolic aspect to the way they are standing.
      Miles' trumpet (with the mic) is pointed straight at Kenny's belly, and he is standing still but in command while Kenny is pouring out this longing solo, a somewhat feminine solo. There is a discrete phallic/sexual symbolism to their postures and the trumpet (Miles was certainly aware of how his instrument could be seen as a symbol of masculinity). At the climax of the track, Kenny is bucking and his sax moaning like a woman cumming hard... 😸

    • @louise_rose
      @louise_rose ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andradas9688 No, I did mean the passage beginning around 2:20 (key and tempo change at 2:35) - but there are several "liberation moments" in this superb take, 3:20 is another one. Miles mentions Wagner in one of the interview bits on the dvd, and this entire solo has a kinship with Wagner's erotically pulsating music for Tristan and Isolde - the long love duet of the second act, especially.

      I think there's also some erotic symbolism to it.Kenny's solo has a definite feminine tone and vibe, and Miles is standing with his trumpet pointed like a *** straight at Kenny's lower torso, looking intently at him... :)
      The ending of the track has, it always seemed to me, a double symbolism that ties in with this: climax or release, but also the birth of a child, with growing pressure from the bass and organ, a final cathartic push - and then finally the "first scream" at the very end, where Miles and Kenny join together. Which locks it back to the title: "Human nature"...

      He's supposed to have said just that about Mike Stern when he called some friend on the phone, around 1980, and Mike was jamming with his guitar in the same room as the guy. in the background. "Who's that on guitar? I want to hear more of him!". Mike ended up in the comeback band.

    Love this! Slow and gradual building of rhythm and tension.... .... hints at first and then a full blow crescendo of BLISS! Great medicine here!!! The best I've felt in weeks after listening to this.. Clean and beautiful. Thanks for sharing this
