    • @elsongs
      @elsongs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Keyboards are my 1st instrument, Bass is my 2nd. In my first bands, we never had a bass guitarist, so I did synth bass with my left hand. That got me used to the concept of basslines, and playing synth bass trained my left hand for fretting later on.

      elsongs I did some EDM and bought bass guitar, because you can’t replace that sound with keyboards. Best bass sound imo comes from a bass guitar and when amp cabinet is microphoned, not di.

    5:02 Fun Fact: The entirety of Don’t Stop Til’ You Get Enough consists of only 2 chords, (with the exception of the bridge) Just goes to show the true genius of Michael & his team. :)

    • @IrnBruNYC
      @IrnBruNYC 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Gelo Galvez Another fun fact: the bridge for Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough was written by keyboardist Greg Phillinganes. MJ refused to share songwriting credit, which cost him millions of dollars. (There is an early pressing of the single that does list Phillinganes as co-writer, but he never saw a dime of royalties from the song.)
      (The bridge contains much more than 2 chords)

    You're right about Billie Jean. It's all about that transition from traditional bass guitar to analogue synths in the late 70's early 80's. Billie Jean was a superb example of that. I was in a band that did a version of it - not an easy tune to cover I can tell you! Awesome. (Oh, not sure whether it's a classic disco track like Chic, but it's close enough! :0)

    I was trying to trace the origin of the bass line on the first song. I got as far as Sugarhill Gang Rapper's Delight but thanks to this video I found that was just using the bass line to Chic Good Times. My favourite are remixes of disco tunes that have been touched by the modern deep bass/kick house sound.

      Yes Claudio, this one is good. Most of them leave it out because it takes so much longer to get it right. The most important bit is the first four notes on the open E string. The first three notes are open short but the fourth is muted. So - Boom, Boom, Boom, Uh!. Remember, you must use two finger to mute or you will get string harmonics.

    Hey dude, I see you can play Keys and bass, what other instruments have you thrown your hands to?

    Man you do really make my day with your videos, you don't just play some of my favorite music from the 80s/90s like disco and funky but you also play it so very damn well and, man, keyboards, bass guitar... are you related to Mike Oldfield???
    Keep up and thank you for your great videos

    I like to see how one does the "WOW" effect on an electric guitar. I heard that on some mid/late 60's music.

      Close enough for me. Being exact has less value. Even Verdine White changes it up when he plays.

      @@Sumbibebe I get changing it up but it's not like it's a fill. It's just the wrong note in the line that he always plays.

    Yes Sir, 'We are Family' ; Fantastic. Mr Bernard Edwards is the Daddy. However: 'Belga Bass', here on U-Tube, is bang on the money.

    Nice video. I´m only missing a drum mashine or o metronome in the background. This could emphasize more the laid back beats.

    You should have put Sister Sledge's (Bernard Edward's) "He's the greatest dancer"...

    Chic has no definite article in their appelation, they are simply called Chic not The Chic. Same thing with Queen. Other than that it's a pretty good list. I only wish you added Forget Me Nots by Patrice Rushen (bass by Freddy Washington). We are family is basically Chic with Sister Sledge. Bernard Edwards is a monster bassist.

    Queen indeed take the bassline from Bernie Edwards
    And Michael Jackson also take the bassline for Billie Jean from Hall & Oates "I can't go for that"

    The Michael Jackson part was missing a song. I think P.Y.T would be a better fit (I know, the bass line is done by a Moog synth, but hey, it is damn funky).
    Is the bassline of September an F (what you play which sounds right) or E(which is theoretically correct but who cares)?
    Loved this, inspiring me to learn the glue instrument, [imitates Adam Neely's video ending] *BASS*.

      I'm 99% sure it's E to F# and that he's just playing it wrong with the F, F#.

    Real cool bass jamming!!
    On Billie Jean, Luis Johnson would play the 2 strings only on the 1. And yes, the synth played bass like you showed.
    Bernard Edwards lives in my soul. I even bought a MusicMan Stingray (soon to arrive) in his honor.
    Claudio, U Bad Ass Bass!!

    Great job on The Chic bass line.
    The Sugarhill Gang used this riff before Queen did on their track “Rappers Delight”.
    Also check out The XX's track “Swept Away” bass line great...

      Lee Mearns The Sugar Hill Gang just cloned Chic. That is why they got sued and later they reached a deal. It was cloned.
