11:42 Really like how Shredder only attacks Karai once he sees the Hamato symbol on the star she threw at him. Really subtle way of showing how he cares for Karai, just not enough to outweigh his hatred of Splinter
I never realized as a kid but I guess the reason Karai is the only mutant to switch back and forth is because of whatever chemical Baxter accidentally added into the mix
Took me a literal decade to even notice that, idk how they both managed to catch that on their first viewing. It was definitely some kind of experimental retro-mutagen (same orange color as Donnie's), not sure how Stockman managed to do that without April's DNA tho and I don't think him making retro-mutagen is ever brought up again
We actually gonna get more into Shredder after this. He REALLY starts spiraling out of control after this. Especially in his main moments in seasons 3 and 4. For all his calling Splinter a rat, both his backstory here, the whole thing with the trap and everthing after, he will sacrifice and backstab for his petty vengeance. He really thinks he loves Karai, but just not enough for her to be more important than killing Splinter.
Yup have you also noticed how everyone around Shredder lost their humanity I do like how everyone that works for Shredder has lost their humanity getting turned into a mutant animal foreshadowing that Shredder himself may soon turn into something.
@Skye2993 Indeed, and contrast him with Splinter in a way 🤔 . Splinter despite appearances maintains his humanity through being a good teacher and father figure. Meanwhile, Shredder shows more and more how monstrous he is, regardless of how he appears or will appear 🤔.
I remember watching this episode when I was 10 or 11 and the moment Karai fell into the mutagen always stuck with me. It's so tragic and the brief scream Kelly Hu delivers before she falls in really stuck with me
the same way karais mom dies is the same way karai got mutated. karais mom got in the way of shredder trying to kill splinter. karia got mutated cause shredder tried to kill leo. shredder had no intention of mutating karai he has real love for karai
Karai's mutation is still one of my favorite moments from this series. So tragic and unexpected. The brief scream from Karai before she's submerged is gut-wrenching. Btw I watched the 1990 movie for the first time a few nights ago, I really enjoyed realizing over the course of the film just how many references the 2012 series had made to it, especially throughout season 3. Can't wait to see Shane's reactions to them lol Totally agree with what was said about a prequel series too. If anything it'd have to be a comic series since that plot wouldn't be as PG or even involve the titular TMNT enough to justify its own show, but I think in this series especially they reference things from Splinter and Shredder's past in Japan enough that a collection of really interesting stories could be told. I'd be willing to spend an inappropriate amount of money on that if they got Ciro Nieli (showrunner and artist of the comic-style illustrations in this show) to make it.
Yes! Also yeah that weird stuff Stockman spilled is what made her able to shift back to normal. And Leo and Karai are treated as love interests in the show.
Crazy episode this one’s burned into my memory from childhood. I remember being so shocked that they mutated Karai, definitely a tragic heart tugging episode. Awesome reaction!
tbh shredder is so fucking delusional, it’s scary. he truly believes he is at no fault for the death of karais mother and her mutation. he’s so blinded by rage, hatred and his obsession with revenge that he isn’t living in the reality everybody else is. he’s a rlly well thought out character in my opinion and his delusion makes him a scarier
I want your opinion on this one especially yours Shane because Vengeance is mine is to this day MY FAVOURITE EPISODE in the entire series! Ironically enough the best episode of the 2012 incarnation of tmnt doesn't focus that much on the Turtles. Instead it focuses on Karai, Splinter and Shredder and the collumnation of their storyline, with Hon Lee, Kevin Michael Richardson and especially Kelly Hu giving it their all in their performances! Some of the best action in the series is topped by some of the most heavy hitting drama, without sacrificing the humour. This episode also gives SO much backstory to Splinter and Shredder as it showcased that their rivalry wasn't just about a woman! And even though in my mind I knew were this episode was going, my heart was still denying it. I was like 'No...they are not just gonna mutate Karai right? They are not that cruel to do that to Splinter!' And then they DO IT!!! Karai gets mutated and our heroes lost everything! I was furious first time I watched this to the point, no joke, I gave up on the series altogether! I liked Splinter, I liked Karai and to bring to them such tragedy was too much for me at the time and for a while this was one of my most hated episodes because of that! However when I simmered down and eventually finished the show, I realised ' You know what That's OK! It's OK for me to feel angry! Because this episode succeeded in what it was supposed to do aka taking a once villainous character and make us sympathise with her enough to care for her tragic fate! Tragic, dark and pulsepounding this is the best the show has given us. And come on who didn't cry when Splinter and Karai reunited! It gets me every time...😢
Hey, thanks for the comment and sorry I’ve been behind this week because of a lot of busy family stuff and obviously editing. It’s one of my favorite episodes so far but the jury is out if it’s my favorite episode, but I can tell you I really felt the gut punch of seeing Karai getting mutated. I hated that for Splinter and I actually kind of hated it for shredder. In my mind because she can take the form of a human. I question whether they need to use the reverse mutagen on her because I can imagine a scenario where she just kind of learned to accept it like splinter. I’m going to have to rank my episodes when the show is all said and done but this is certainly a memorable one. Probably top three. Thanks again for the love! - shane
@3rdstreetreactions No worries man I get it. I just really wanted your thoughts on this episode because of the impact it did for me. I can't spoil it for you but all I can say is that this story pays off big time.
Karai’s mutation was a memory that stuck with me forever as a kid. It was tragic and heartbreaking to watch and on top of that, there wasn’t any episodes for months after this
The writing for Karai in this series is a little bit all over the place, I feel like they were trying to do something like what they did with her in the 2003 series, but they had her switch on Shredder too early and didn't know what to do with her after so they did this!
In the 2003 series she was just another bland henchman. Now like I said to another guy, you can support and like whatever you want. It doesn't change the fact that this story was good because you said it wasn't!
@@nikoskn1252 I said it was a little all over the place not that it was bad per se, and Karai I the 2003 was not a bland henchmen, she felt like she owed allegiance to Shredder for adopting her and she had a lof internal conflicts which made her somewhat unpredictable.
@PlamiAG First off, it's not all over the place in this one. They do something in s03 that I can not say now in order to prolong her story, however it paid of in s04 and s05! It is a great ark something that 2003 karai couldn't deliver because she was a bland piece of wood like the rest of the characters. Now I've seen your channel, and you don't like this show at all. Fair enough! I don't like the 2003 show at all for various reasons. So I don't think we can agree on things here. I just wanted to correct your statement a little bit. Take it as you will! It doesn't change the fact that this is my favourite episode in the series, because of Karai's tragic story!
@@nikoskn1252 That's not true, I do like this show, I was very critical of it at first sure, but I did grow to love it! Also I am not saying it's bad, I think it's a good episode and I do like her mutating, I just think it's all over the place because they had Karai learn the truth very early on yet still managed to unnecessarily to use filler to waste time until they had her turn on him but to prevent the character from joining the turtles they had her turn into this, and waste anther season of screen time! Now I do like what they do with her in S4 and 5 but they definitely meandered a little bit on the way there!
@PlamiAG I am sorry man, but I don't buy it! Someone who constantly berates a show every episode doesn't like it! There is no same in admitting to that! And as for Karai the mutation wasn't filler, it actually contributed to the tragedy both her and Splinter faced and to me it is poignant! What they do at the second half of s03, that is meandering, that is awful and also it is one of the worst clichés in Cartoons that pushes all the wrong buttons for me. I will elaborate on that in s03 because I don't like that season and I am going to be critical, but overall this storyline is the dark personal stuff I am looking for in a show. The 2003 Karai kinda had that especially when she almost stabbed Leo, but the overall blandness of the 2003 show never helped her. Like I said I am not a fan!
The darkest iteration of the turtles is definitely the original Mirage comics that started it all. In fact that could be the next adaptation, an Invicible style r rated version of the ninja turtles 🤔. Nevertheless, your guys reaction to this episode was kind of similar to mine when first seeing it. This is probably one of the most dramatic episodes in this series so far 🤔. Lastly, I think they keep Splinter away from the action simply because the turtles need to shine and Splinter needs to be brought in for much more major fights. It's kind of similar to why the Shredder doesn't fight the turtles until it's needed for the sake of the show 🤔.
Yeah, Shredder's character is just "I wanna kill Hamato Yoshi" in this show but I like his relation to Karai, he isn't a bad villain at all but I kind of like the 2003 Shredder better even though he is technically a different Shredder. This version of Shredder kind of gets better as we go on in the series where he shows how far he is willing to go to get his revenge. Also the mutagen in this show is very inconsistant even though the Kraang say it is unstable it doesn't justify the random stuff that is caused by it. Some mutants become ugly monsters, mindless beasts, gain super powers and whatnot.
I don't have a problem with that being his motivation. It's simple and I like it. There are a lot of people in real life who blame there problems on others.
Shredder is a psychopath. What makes him a great villain here is the fact that he justifies his actions as good even though we know the atrocities he has done! That's complexity. But I guess being a squid or having multiple versions later on is better am I right 2003 fan boy. Get in touch with the new decade!
@kenanmeral8891 You know we can't always passively accept opinions. I could have gone way worse because I really hate the 2003 fan boys but I didn't. Take it as you will
