Just found out recently that Tang Shen's voice actress in this episode is Karai's actress in the Michael Bay movies. Really appreciate the way this series is able to snag so many talents from other TMNT iterations to provide voices
Shredder never cared for Miwa, especially after all the things he did to her. Killing her mother, kidnapping her when she was an infant, raising her in a world of deception and confusion by him making hate her real father in the beginning and when she found out about him being her real father he locked her in a dungeon, then caged her up and mutated her, then months later recaptured her and keeping her hostage against her own will and injecting with brain worms. And I’ll leave the rest for y’all to watch in the future so I won’t spoil it.
This has to be one of the best episodes in the series, I wish they made it a two parter so that we get to see Shredder find out about his lineage. Also Kappa are a well known japanese legend, they are talked about and used in anime sometimes.
Especially how Splinter dealt with the loss of Shen. I wondered if he ever had time to grief over her or didn’t have time since he now had turtles to take care of… 😢
This is my favorite episode of season 3. Truly shows why 2012 Splinter is the definitive Splinter for me. Fun Facts: 1. The voice actress of Tang Shen is Minae Noji. She was Karai from the 2014 Michael Bay movie. 2. Yes, it's true lol, the Yokai or Kappas do indeed steal your soul through the butt (specifically through the anus). 3. Funny enough, I noticed there's a bit of a mix between the Japanese and Chinese Languages. I'm saying that because Tang Shen is a chinese name and Hamato Yoshi is a Japanese name. The episode I'm sure many were eager for you guys to get too lol. Nevertheless, this was one of the best and saddest episodes of this show. Much of your guys reaction mirrors Weaintseenit's reaction to this episode like: Shredder's voice not matching his design here or Teng Shen kind of playing both sides etc. Also, I love how this show doesn't feel the need to discuss the ethics of whether or not the turtles should let things play out or prevent something like Shen's death. It's just left open or not discussed lol. Lastly, in regards to the backstory I think it's implied at the start of this episode that Shredder already knows about his lineage and was bidding his time to take over, particularly when Splinter's father mentions how Yokai bring tragedy with them and Shredder gives an ominous look 🤨. I'm gettin' a serious Ken/Yuria/Shin dynamic between Hamato, Shen, and Oroku. I'm convinced the writers of this saw/read Fist of The North Star. Also, this episode aired in 2015, 16 years in the past, that would put it in the year 1999. Eh, New York wasn't that bad. There might've been a gang war going on, I think, but still of a hell of a lot better than in the 80's.
Kappa are also creatures from Harry Potter universe. Cool episode, great fight. I will spoil one thing from 2003 show they also time travel but to old Japan, it's different but also cool from what I remember.
Although this episode definitely retconned and tweaked a few details from the previous drawn flashback scenes of the same events, I compelte forgive it because of how epic an episode it made for. Almost makes me want a Better Call Saul type prequel series showing past Oroku Saki's journey to becoming the international crime lord Shredder in present day, there's just so much cool story potential there
i like this episode and everything but I think they should have done a better job in showing how tang shen die they should have had shredder just stab her in her stomach or chest because that slice right there just honestly looks like she gotta that stealth slice because when the turtles or one of there allies be fighting a person with a blade weapon they get slice and they don't be dieing and losing an arm or a leg and what ever happened to splinter dad did die by the fire or did shredder had kill him they never really told us or show us what had happened to him

Tang Shen's death was very heartbreaking in this episode. Also it's very heartbreaking Karai lost her mother when she was baby.
