Daisy 880: How many FPS per pump?

  • The first 5-6 pumps make a big difference each, but once you start getting beyond 7 pumps, each one only gives you a few more FPS per pump.

I know this is an older video but I would say high 600 fps is pretty dam good for this gun without getting into higher quality pellets. It's a great back yard shooter. Good video.

I'd of tried it with 15 - 20 pumps. 23 - 25 pumps it will start not fireing because the hammer isn't heavy enough to pop the valve. Swinging the gun downward when pulling the trigger will add to the hammer force and discharge it. I used 15 all the time. BUT! It was with one from the 80s that was still all metal construction. Great vid. Testing was a big part in airgunning for me. A meter would of been the bomb. I used a 10 pound block of modeling clay. Penetration varied widely with temp. 60s an inch. 80s 2 inches. Normally the clay was swollen with pellets from blasting bottle caps. Cleaning it out was a minor pain by slicing it like thin bread and squeeze out the lumps. I tested a hundred different pellets with different guns to find their favorite. The Beeman gold hollowpoints (Silver Bear) was one of the most accurate. Surpassed only by Daisys Olympic match grade Avanti. They came packaged seperately like a box of chocolates. 10 shots in one hole was not uncommon.

880 seems to perform well with Gamo Lethal / 5.5gr., and the less expensive Crosman Destroyer and Hollow Point.
The worst pellet I’ve found for 880 is H&N Crow Magnum / 8gr., maybe because they are sold unpolished.

Very well produced video. Airguns are definitely my thing and I'm always glad to discover another YT channel that spotlights them. The 880 is a bb/pellet gun and the 800fps is for bbs, I'm pretty sure, so you might try them. I also found recently that Pyramyd Air is listing the velocity as 750 for bbs and 715 for pellets. I have seen the 800fps figure that you're using on a number of online suppliers sites, but the are probably just stating what's on the box. Pyramyd is pretty big on customer satisfaction and I think they temper the maker's claims sometimes after doing their own testing. I do lots of testing on lots of guns just for my own enjoyment ( don't really want to do the whole YT publishing gig, so I'm very grateful for you guys that do ) but I don't think I have ever seen those ultralight pellets, so this is good info. Not a big fan of any Gamo pellets that I can think of, but I try to have some of everything I hear about, just for my testing and because you never know when you might find a sleeper that excels in one of your guns. Also never seen that chrony. What's it called?

    • @casualairgunner7417
      @casualairgunner7417  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I don’t think there’s a brand name, it’s just a generic chrony off Wish. As for the ultralight pellets, I think Gamo discontinued them and I can sort of see why; almost any break barrel 177 would make those go supersonic which is not a desirable trait to most airgunners

just watched and noted numbers between 760 and 880.
2 pumps an 880 is worth 3 pumps on the 760,
both pumped equal after that, the 880 is consistently about 100 fps faster.
with either, there isn't much sense going past 8-9 pumps.
9 pumps from a 760 is slightly slower than 6 pumps from an 880
8 pumps on 760 about equal to 5 on the 880, 7 vs 4 are close like that too.
the 880 is just a much better choice for that same kind of money spent.
expect 600-650 fps with 7-8-9 pumps with 7.5 grain pellets.

Very interesting, but not a surprise. I've owned a few 880's (and an 881) since the early '70's and still own my first 880 that I got for Christmas in '72. Back in those days, they advertised the FPS using BB's and claimed 650fps, and all 880's had a smooth bore barrel, with the 881 coming out a year later in '73 I think, with a rifled barrel (I had an 881 in the early '80's). At that point, they were saying 710fps with BB's and 685fps with pellets.

The manufacturers employ all sorts of manipulations to get the projectile velocities they advertise. In this case, I believe the main manipulation is measuring the velocity of metal BBs instead of pellets. Since this particular gun has shallower rifling than a dedicated pellet gun, it lends itself more to high speeds with BB's. Other manipulations include cleaning and oiling of the barrel itself (which you should be doing yourself anyway) and possibly oiling of the ammunition itself. I myself have performed these manipulations, and have gotten metal BB's to fly at speeds in the 740 to 760 FPS range. I've only gotten one to go past 800 by pumping more than 10 times, which is not recommended because it can potentially damage the underlever and/or spring.

I use 8 pumps for shooting rats at night with my 880. It shoots reliably best with RWS Basic wad cutter pellets. I have also taken wild Rodgers to 15 yards with the same pellet and 8 pumps. The pellet is still climbing at that distance, so U hold about an inch low. Head shots, and the 880 with these pellets dies the job.

if you're a good shot, clean head shot at 5-6 pumps will drop them 15-20 yards. practice at targets a bunch at 17 yards, stick with the same pellets, try 5-6-7-8 pumps.. whatever the pellet likes being shot from an 880 to consistently hit within a dime. great shot placement is much more important than power, but I'm really liking 7.6 grain Winchester domed hollow points at 7-8 pumps group pretty tight at 20 yards.

Never go over 20meters with lower power air rifles better less distance, there was somewhere a video about how much power is needed for pest that they don't suffer.
Everything else is Animal torture and if you get caught doing this you will end in prison, with good reason.
