- This week I'm in the most Northern town on earth, Longyearbyen in Svalbard. I spend a couple of days photographing the town before boarding a ship to recce a workshop we're running next year. I mostly used my Sony A7RV and 24-70ii for these shots. Occasionally the 50mm f1.2 as well.
A big thank you to mpb.com and their Kit Hall of Fame Campaign for sponsoring this video. Vote for your favourite kit for the chance to win a Sony A7III (voting closes on August 4):

Hahaha! My best performance on camera ever 😂
Mads loved it really.... great video mate! Fav photos was at 10:21
You were in your element here, James and it was funny to see Nigel and Mads struggling.
You don't struggle when you don't try 😂
@@MadsPeterIversen I was gonna say who was struggling ... 🤣
I really want to see Nigel's photo he was talking about...
James, you are a master of your style.
That's a very unique compliment!
You making great pictures easy peasy and Mads didn’t even switched the Camera on! 😂 hilarious!
I just LOVE your Nordic photography. The industrial buildings and machinery mixed with the colorful houses is BEAUTIFUL!
You are correct about the needing a firearm outside of the edge of the town. It’s a stunningly beautiful place. There is a TH-cam channel by Cecilia Blomdahl who lives just outside of the town and shows an amazing insight into living on Svalbard.
The minimalist look adds to the stillness and ambience of these shots love it , i could go crazy here. Shades of Lewis Baltz and the new topographics 😊
The opening sequence and the images were some of the most visually pleasing and beautiful pieces of work I've ever seen. You are a true source of inspiration. Kudos
Coffee and a James video. Good morning from California.
What I like most about your photography is that you capture the essence of place. Your images give me an insight of what the place you visit is about. I mostly enjoy landscape photography as well with its extreme foregrounds, incredible conditions, epic vistas, etc., etc. but this is so refreshing. Keep it going, James!
You took a picture of the house I grew up in!
Thank you!
Did you guys get a chance to meet @CeciliaBlomdahl and Christoffer? It would have been great to see some local peoples showing you at least around Longyearbyen!
His style is impeccable mann
Wow!
Theses pictures are lovely. Well done James. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work.
After viewing Mads’ video and the beautiful scenery, I thought how is James going to cope! So glad you found your human environment odds and ends. Loved the photos! Definitely your style!
Nice how the colour of your knit hat matches the church‘s roof at 2:07; and that Wes Anderson moment at 6:59! The colours, the mood, the subjects - to me this is one of your most satisfying videos in a long time. Thx for that!
I really enjoy your composition and editing style. Beautiful photos.
Love you work, wit and videos. TY!
That place is incredible.
Really enjoyable watching how you photograph a town like this! I quite enjoy them, although haven't had the chance to visit one with a camera quite yet.
What a ruggedly beautiful place. Cool!
I think those images are great and very interesting. It sure is a colorful place and has some beautiful surroundings.
Just got back from there last month. I loved it. Longyearbyen is definitely your kind of place. Looking forward to your shots once you left the town. That’s not going to be your usual subject matter. Cheers!
Great. My two favorite photo TH-camrs, James and Mads.
Nice video. You really need to say that only UK residents can win. Saves a lot of time for us non UK types. Thanks for sharing.
Hi, we just wanted to say that the competition is indeed open to more than the UK ! It's US and EU as well.
This might be more photos taken in one video than the previous 6 months of videos. I like it.
I was in Svalbard about a month ago! Interesting place with interesting history. It's surreal walking around in the middle of the night and it's still bright as day.
Ah, Longyearbyen, the town where I grew up!
Very, very enjoyable. As ever
I’d definitely love to go there, not going to happen unfortunately, unless I win the lottery that is.
Love the images James, you were most definitely in your element there, my kind of shots
Having been to Longyear I can share your enthusiasm. Quite possibly the most humbling place I have ever been. Especially in winter, the emptiness accompanied by the scale of everything is incredibling humbling. Makes you feel very small. A subject you may or may not like for when you go back is the Coal mines. I do believe one is still open and the contrast of the coal on the surrounding snow is a challenging photograph.
Oh man, I'm interested in that Svalbard trip alright, just won't be able to afford a seat. Looking forward to the video that comes after though!
Just got parked at work with some extra time and this popped up. Perfect timing
It looks better with snow, I think. Carry on. 👍🥂
Hi James, big fan. Great video. What a location for a Leica M11… 😊
Love your style of photography. And video. Greetings from Australia. 👍🦘
Congrats James on the committee appointment. I really enjoy watching your channel and always seem to get something of interest from the experience. Although I like photography very much, cameras are never made for me. As the one-handed southpaw that I am, even if they made a left handed camera I'm not sure if it would make any difference. Well it might, a little. On the other hand, pause, there are so many lovely cameras out there that I will never use. So, I'll leave the voting to others. Bonne chance.
In one of your vids, you said "the best thing to do to improve your photography is start a YT channel" and that's what I did! Thanks for the inspiration, James!
Beautiful! 🤯
Hello James, I just watched and enjoyed very much your video on Svalbard. Tempting to go there one day. Just a warning. I know a bit Norwegian and
‘Gjelder hele Svalbard’ means this sign is valid for the whole of Svalbard. I am afraid a bear will not stop (always) at the edge of town. Greetings from Holland!
Great perspectives as always James. awesome video. Who's plumber's crack at 7:38 ?
When I read the title I thought this was gonna be Leeds.
Regarding rifles....you can rent one at the supermarket 😀
😮😮😮 this was so so cool
When you said you were in the "most Northern pub in the world" I imagined The Slaughtered Lamb for some reason! 😂
Hi james, your photo's often have a dreamy look. is this achieved with a mist filter, or with a orton effect in PS?
Great work
Kind regards
8:27 we’ll we know James loves his gear ⛄️
Everyone looked so cold except the guy on the bike in shorts! He must be from California 😂 . Great video!
The first 30s - 1 minute tells me so much about why my vacation photos didn't turn out. Like they're almost there but not quite.
Well done on the Hall of Fame and socks (I do love a new pair of socks)
#trendsetter
Great shots, did you take your beloved G9 with you? I cannot imagine living somewhere that has no daylight for months then no night for months, that just blags my melon man.
8:00 Damn James, became of 'em cool kids now, didn'tcha?
I love your videos. Quick question... What's your ratio of shots you take to shots you keep (are worth editing)?
do you use any filters like Black Mist Diffusion filter??
This place gets photographed on TH-cam more than basketball hoops these days.
is there an Iceland workshop anythime soon?
Approximately how much would the workshop cost, how long would it be for, etc? These would help me to know if it was something I could afford or not. Thanks.
The answer is, "too much" 🙂
That's a weird hall of fame, they got drones vs lenses and lenses vs cameras. But eh, whatever. I voted.
Can't understand why you don't use the voigtländer lenses for sony e, even though you liked it for the leica
Seems everyone I follow seems to going Svalbard at the moment. Personally for me Iceland and the cold conditions do nothing for me. But that’s just my opinion.
hey james, do you mind posting a link to your camera strap? cheers!
Following
Confratz!....? haha
What a wild place. Who lives here? Is it just a town like any other?
Does anyone know James’ watch? I think it’s Tudor..
Well, I just cast my votes, filled out my details, and verified that I ain't a robot. But it wouldn't let me submit my entry. 😂
Anybody know which camera strap that is??? I'm not seeing it anywhere. Maybe custom rope strap with Peak anchor clips??
I second this… looks like an ARTISAN & ARTIST rope but I’ve not seen this combo.
@devinpense Hey, I found this guy making them with Peak anchor links. Look for Woodgate Camera Straps. I just ordered one; awaiting delivery!
@@CassidyHansen ha! I actually saw that too. Looks really great!
MPB give you money so I understand you need to say nice things about them, but I couldnt disagree more. They'll stiff you on your P/X price once you've sent it to them, and their warranty is a joke. They'll replace a defective camera with a lesser spec one, *or* you can wait "at least 4 weeks" for a repair - and then charge you carriage for sending the replacement. I lost out big time dealing with them - never again!
Nice snaps by the way - I envy you that trip!
Beautiful video as always!! so jealous. Could you pleeeeeease tell me what your messenger bag is. Ive been looking for a deep shoulder bag for ages. Im not a fan of a big backpack for walkabouts. Or... if anyone is reading this and can recommend one that would be very much appreciated. Thanks Guys. Happy Shooting!
MPB's chance to win a Sony A7III only applies to UK residents 😔 (according to the fine print.)
Hi, we just want to let you know that the competition is open to US, UK and the EU! You're being redirected to the UK page which is why you're seeing those details. Hope this helps!
@@mpbcom Thank you! I feel a little silly, but thanks for the help!
Why the title change?
Algorithms, baby!
When you say 20 past 2 in the morning did you mean AM!?
Yes, AM.
@@soundscape26 I didn’t know such a place existed until I watched this
@@jmackultra It's because of the very high latitudes at the peak of summer. You are almost on the North Pole. Conversely in the winter you barely see the sun.
First Thomas, now you Nigel etc... Give it 5 mins and Gavin will be there.
😂
Didn't you get to meet www.youtube.com/@CeciliaBlomdahl ??
I can't vote. I don't living England :-(
Hi, the Hall of Fame competition is open to US, UK and the EU!
@@mpbcom 3. The Competition is open to anyone aged 18 and resident in the United Kingdom (excluding Northern Ireland) only. You must provide us with your real name and a valid email address. but I'm in NZ anyway
But, the town had Pylons. You love Pylons.
This kind of dense, walkable urbanism is illegal to build in most American cities
James, I love your videos. But you had all those great cloud capped mountains to photograph with great skies and you seem to want to take images that look like holiday snaps. I understand you want to tell a story, but I just don't see the story. I'd rather go wow, look at that vista than oh, thats a nice truck kicking the dust up.
I try my hardest to understand, but I just don't get it. I've said before that the images caught in your videos are better than the stills! I get the video might be doing some hdr to get both clouds and lush blue sky but surely your stills can do something similar with a bit of processing?
I'm really sorry to be negative, like I said I love watching your videos and I know from your earlier work you used to take great images. It almost seems that you refuse to take a wow photo as taking wow photos makes you a lesser photographer.
Keep making the great videos but please as well as your story telling photos you include a couple of wow shots just to keep schmucks like me happy.
If you want to promote your workshop then include the photos of the crazy mountainous valleys.
Sorry, love your videos.
Big hugs.
The photos won’t change mate, very happy with my work these days 👍🏻
It's a pity that the Sony sensor makes everything look so artificial and digital. Where has the charm and character of photography gone...?
Rather than take a rifle, perhaps learn to speak polar bear and ask them nicely if they don't mind you coming into their back yard.
The most Northern town on Earth ?, Sounds dreadful, full of Ferrets and flat caps I imagine ?🤣 Maybe most Northerly town would be more accurate ?
Yeah, you did just stay back to photograph trash bins? Why is that? Laziness? Ego? Are you a photographer or a comedian? Just asking...
