I think that what people might be missing is that you're not making videos of gear, you're making videos about your journey through finding the right gear. I've actually found these incredibly useful.
You're not doing boring sharpness measurements. You're talking about usability. You're talking about enjoyment. You're talking about finding gear that makes your photography enjoyable. I've found this beneficial in finding gear that works for me. It's not the gear you're talking about, it's why and how you're talking about it.
Wouldn't mind some more videos back in Snowdonia, though!

You will go crazy if you listen to comments. People love to make negative comments because they know they are anonymous. I personally love the occasional gear video. I have found on my channel that the comments have nothing to do with the way the majority of the people feel. Don't chase comments.
Don't think they are all negative BUT constructive criticism. Many LOVE James and come here for his personality more than the subject matter... but when it becomes GEAR centered/focused, some may feel it's "too much"... allow them to give him their input/constructive criticism.

This is a very interesting and worth while channel.

As much as everyone loves an epic landscape gotta admit that you have a really good eye for urban photos. Always love seeing them for a change.

One of your ongoing charms is how you waffle on about so much stuff. It’s very homespun and conversational, and you drop some valuable tips in along the way. Also how you interrupt yourself, this time to talk about talking about gear.

To add to the notion, since I'm commenting fairly seldom: I actually do like both the photography and the "gear" topics you are doing. As others have said, you don't do the typical lens or camera performance review, but the actual use of them, which is in my opinion sometimes an overlooked aspect. I like your nonchalant an seemingly un- or less-biased approach to looking at gear. Especially with the 50/1.2 example or with the Leica, kind of demystifying some hyped stuff and giving your 2 cents about it. I think there's a place for both the art and the gear, because there will always be someone looking for a take on a lens/body/system. And of course all of this is drivin by your chill and humorous style, what makes at least 50% of the reaon why I whatch your videos. Keep doing what intrests you, I think the audience will follow what seems genuine.
Not many can say this but I’ve seen the Iceland airport up close too. Totally unintentionally. While flying from Calgary to London, crossing over Greenland my wife asked me, how far too go. So I dutifully pulled up the onboard flight tracking app and noted the pilot had turned from the polar arc we were flying toward the UK and the course and destination were showing Reykjavik. I turned to her and said, it seems we’re going to Iceland instead of London. She was puzzled by my response. So was I.
A few moments later the Captain came on to announce we were deviating to Reykjavik for a short maintenance stop. He gave some fancy pilot talk explaining the problem, so I’ll paraphrase - “folks, we have to touch down because …… the shitter is full.”
So, we landed and I shot some snaps of the capital and surrounding landscape from the window as we touched down. We were then towed to a remote area where the plane had a dump.

Phew, I was just glad you're still making videos! I'm pretty sure that if you stopped photography and instead narrated videos of a wall of paint drying, I would still watch and giggle at your narration. I just quite love what you do and what you share!
I’m complete agreement with a lot of the comments, if you post a video I’m going to watch it. Even the gear videos are enjoyable. Also as a fellow dad of a two year old I completely understand, bedsides they can turn everyday moments into something more exciting then a grand vista.
I usually steer clear of landscape photographers TH-cam channels because it’s often the same locations of the same old scenes. They generally offer nothing new, just another pretty picture that’s emotionally void that lacks any meaning to the viewer. Those images of everyday scenes you captured are refreshingly interesting, showing us something we haven’t seen before. Bravo I loved them👏
For whatever it's worth, I find your content to have enough variety to keep me interested. I've lost interest in and unsubscribed from several photography channels recently but yours keeps me coming back, even when there are no 🐑
Echoing the voices of many of the other comments here. I enjoy watching your gear analysis as much as anything else. Keep making the videos you like, it's your personality, photography skills and analysis that keeps me coming back
I'm never been too bothered by gear videos, as a means of making content. I'm just annoyed by the people who make a spectacle of the gear they've chosen on any given week. "The reason I'm leaving Canon for Pentax" or whatever nonsense gets clicks these days, just rubs me the wrong way. If the gear serves a purpose for the content, it's okay. If it's just there to sell affiliate links for the camera or lens the person is using that week, I zone out. Outside of accessories, like bags and memory cards, I've never really felt like you were selling camera gear as content.
Well, he did videos on gear change in the past as well.

It's refreshing to see a gear review that shows the reviewer realising they didn't need a so called desirable feature. then go on to explain. I own an expensive 100-400mm lens and have used this behemoth twice! Time to trade it in with BPM 👍
I've never minded the gear videos. What I do mind is being told the search has come to an end and not being told what you got. Ha, only playing! Looking forward to hearing what it is in the future
Damn, I love the gear videos! Particularly the ones where you use older cameras (like the GX1) and can show just how competent older cameras are
I find all your videos wonderful. Your humour is fantastic! I am sorry I don't comment very much but I watch and like. Talking about gear is part of photography - a very important part! You also don't spend the whole video doing it and what you do is very helpful. By the way, if I was told I couldn't have hot chocolate...... with the Baileys! Ahhhhh
I really love your channel, whatever subject your next video will be, I will be watching. Your "gear" videos actually really helped me understand that gear actually do not matter as much as we might think and that you can achieve any kind of photography with almost anything.
Gave me the satisfaction of what I own and just to keep it in use as long as I can have fun with it.
I haven't been watching photography videos lately, but I always find your videos strike a perfect balance between focus on the tools, and the art.
Just my two cents, I really wish you wouldn't change anything about the way you do your videos. I really like the hybrid combination of gear and walk-and-talk photography. It's actually enjoyable and informative.
Whatever you feel like making I will love it! Mostly because what I enjoy the most of your channel is YOU sharing whatever connects you with photography, whatever makes you take certain decisions and whatever makes you think of photography in a certain way, and then enjoining the results! You're the reason I got into photography as a hobby and I love it!! So, whatever you feel like making in this TH-cam channel, as long as you're happy sharing it, I will be here :) you're very unique and as long as you keep sharing whatever you feel is genuine from you, I think most of us will keep bullying you for your hilarious dad jokes in the comment section and giving you the support you deserve for all this content :D
also, ive been wanting to see you trying to make a color grading for a video from your photo editing point of view, I think it would be very interesting to watch!
James, please don't let those not-so-enthusiastic comments drag you down. You should do what you love and in your videos you should share exactly that, doesn't matter if it's your photographic journey or the gear you're testing. I'm a hobby photographer for 12 years now and I know you can't document your photographic journey without talking about lenses as well. I don't see why people would complain about that, I find that quite helpful and inspiring.

Good dad. Hard to believe it's been two years! I don't mind the gear videos, for what it's worth. You seem to always be able to put humor and good images into every video, so it just works.
Demonstrations of gear actually being used in the real world are far more useful to me than in-studio benchmarks and tests. I hope you keep making these videos, along with pure photography videos, because I like the variety in your content. I've been a viewer for many years, but I don't watch every video you publish - I watch the ones that interest me. There seems to be a tiny minority of viewers who can't get to grips with this concept: a creator they like may make content sometimes that doesn't perfectly align with their own interests and personal preferences.
You are pretty much the only photography channel I bother with...Im just happy to leave you rabbiting away in the back ground...photography ...gear...silliness..its all good fella.. your personality carries it, so dont worry over your content...do what puts a smile on your face...👍😁
I don't even know how I found the channel, I've had my camera since the beginning of the month and somehow these "let's go and see what I shoot" videos really picked me up. That's why I subscribed and this mix of photography inspiration and gear review is just perfect.

Personally I've been really enjoying your videos where you discuss the new gear you're trying out, because like other commenters have said, they never really felt like gear videos, more like videos that were focused on photography whilst sinultaneously you were trying out a new toy and discussing what you liked and didn't like about it. I'm sure many other feel the same way, but at least for me personally I watch your videos because I enjoy the personality and sense of humour you bring to them, and also have an affinity for the specific type of photography you focus on (a human element surrounded by nature, or subjects that tell a story in your street photography videos). As long as I get something of both, which is pretty much always the case, then I'm happy. I'm sure gear thumbnails are also pretty good for the youtube algorithm, and as somebody enjoying your content for free, I'd rather know my favourite content creators are doing well than care about whether they talk about gear too much!
I personally enjoy your videos - unlike those produced by many others! Yours are always interesting, even quietly entertaining, and succeed in striking a comfortable balance between your photography and your equipment preferences. What photographer has no interest in the tools that facilitate his work? Thank you for producing such pleasing content.
I love your style of photography. From the human element in landscapes to documenting everyday life. I've been shooting that way for years, but never had a name for it. And whether its gear, composition or 10 tips videos, your humor transcends and makes them all enjoyable. And Mads comment of your "deciding stay back and photograph trashbins" hit the mark at 4:10. Well done.

Good Morning, from California. I enjoy your channel and the mix of information your provide. My sense is as long as TH-cam creators spend time worrying about approval seeking, it will always cause second guessing and anxiety. I am not a creator, I am just a rather accomplished enthusiast who has settled on a few choices for cameras and lenses. Reviews matter to me but less than they used to. However, because I do not care about what the anonymous world thinks, it makes for a very comfortable place to be. I pay attention to comments but do not take them personally. I will watch your videos because the content is thoughtful and worthwhile. I have an appreciation for the work put into producing them. For the record, I have one kit with the two recent versions of the Ricoh GR, a Fuji X100v and a LUMIX Gx9 with 3 lenses. My world is complete for what I am interested in photographing. I eliminated all the big stuff that used to clutter my office. Life is better and I am able to spend more time thinking about what producers like you have to say. Thank you for the time, energy and attention spent to produce your work. Regards……Wayne

For what it's worth I have quite enjoyed this string of gear videos. I think you make really engaging and informative photography videos which are sometimes about gear but more often than not not about gear. I also think we all get to watch them for free once a week. So basically James I think you should make videos about whatever you find interesting and I reckon most of us will stick around because I think most of us would agree you're a good judge of what's interesting.
I actually enjoy watching you try new gear all the time, and I‘ve gone through a very similar transition the past 4 years. I upgraded from Olympus to Canon FF, then went down the fixed lens rabbit hole and bought the Fuji X100V TWICE and sold both, before the Internet went crazy about them (fml). Instead I bought a Leica Q, sold it and bought an M10P, sold it and got a Q2. I think I‘m at a happy place now. Canon FF with lenses ranging from 14-400mm and an everyday walk-around fixed 28mm stupidly overpriced Leica Q2 (but hey I‘m german, so I guess thats okay).
What I‘m trying to say: Try all the camera gear you want and dont let people discourage you. In the end it‘s about the pictures you take, and that should bring you joy! So please continue looking for the camera setup that does just that.

Gear videos are not generally my favourite but saying that you bring such personality to your videos that I know they will be worth the watch. Keep doing what ever you want to, unfortunately there’s a lot of people in you tube comments that haven’t leant proper human behaviour yet, this is not your fault.
My sister was giving a speech at one of our family reunions and opened by quoting our mother who used to say, " you can't change the person you married, but you can change your hair style"! So i say the same or similar words to you James. " You can't change your family members but you "can" change your cameras"! I enjoy every thing you do on your channel!!

Hey James - love your content in general, but I found this video especially interesting because the weather in the majority of the photos was overcast. I really struggle to shoot in overcast weather, but your photos still had a real sense of warmth, interest and life to them despite the conditions. Would love a video on how you approach this, both in the field and in your edits after.

I have to say regardless of what videos you do, I'll watch. Yours has pretty much become my go to channel because I just appreciate your chill vibe, humour, and it's helped my photography style, especially lately, when I had to cull down 15yrs of 750GB/55000 photos. After having a bit of a mental reckoning this year and having lost my love of photography, I've finally been getting it back, largely because I went back to Fuji (X-S20) and only have 2 lenses instead of 8+.
Through the journey I've noticed a lot of the photos I like that I've taken are ones that are of a similar style to how you shoot what some might feel are "random" things. Like, doors. I love doors for some reason. I think through this I now know I like your work because I like to shoot similar things, and I tend to love the way you edit them, the art of which I'm still working on mastering.
It's also led me to finally start working on my website (which will of course be through Squarespace, haha), to finally put my work out there in a non-shitty format, as my current website is a garbage collection of my film/tv work and photography, because I felt
So ultimately I just want to say thank you for being the type of photographer you are, because it's inspired me to be very happy with the type of photographer I am. For so long I shot images because I wanted people to like them or because "this is what other people take pictures of", but this year I finally turned that around and started shooting things for me and why I like to shoot, Thank you!

There are different types of "gear videos" and yours are not the boring spec videos - you show how the gear in question makes a difference in usability, enjoyment, and output, rather than lists of numbers. Even your videos that are more focused on gear have great photography advice and learning points! I have learned a lot from you, keep up the great work!

Because of your „gear videos“ (which are never real gear videos, but photography videos) I bought the Fujifilm X-Pro3 additional to my Sony a7RV. Only use manual lenses with my fuji and really got this feeling of analogue photography back again . I go shooting more often now which helps me dealing with my depression. So: your gear videos changed my life. I love all your videos, even my husband joins me to watch them now because they are so funny, even though he is not a photographer himself. Thank you!

Often times it's not the case of simply "doing wwhat you enjoy." One thing I will say regarding this is that most photography channels do "gear videos" simply because it pulls in the views compared to standard vlog-style videos. It's why all your favourite photographers have a ton of gear review and gear comparison videos. Many times, a creator will actively tell their audience that they don't enjoy them (I can think of three who've done this off-the-top of my head), explaining that they are simply doing it because it helps grow the channel and pay the bills - they'd much rather be doing something else. I'm not saying this is the case for James, but it is the case for many and something to consider.
I for one appreciate different photos from Iceland... every TH-cam photographer and their dog has been to Iceland (some several times), that it has become a cliché by this point.

Hi James, I appreciate your discussing the pros and cons you've found in cameras and lenses as it has helped me select my gear. Not the gear you use but how to determine the gear I prefer. Love your urban shots, hit after hit - don't rush back to the dramatic scenes just yet.
I like gear reviews that focus on way a particular type of kit might be useful such as the f1.2 prime lens for one and how to evaluate whether you should evaluate if it would be worth buying. Too many gear reviews focus more on the spec sheet than what the kit is best suited for.
Nice tip about picking something to focus on when out and not sure what to shoot.
I have cameras that are the right tool and I have other cameras that I just like using for no good reason. I like you videos no matter what your enthusiasm and insight is inspiring to see . Your video’s are always honest and humble and thanks for sharing your delightful personality so many influences videos are dull boring and technical. 👍👍👍👍

The only comments that a creator should listen to are the ones that say not to listen to the comments. The viewers are viewers, not the creator. The viewers found and follow the creator because of the content the creator makes. We're little sheep just bleeting away lol.

I’ve gradually learnt with experience that when a lens is the size of a tin of beans, the novelty of any perceived added benefits soon wear off after I’ve lugged it around for a few hours 😊
Honestly I love the combination of videos which cover both photography and some surface-level gear talk. Plus I'd think it's good for view counts? But I think the most important is that you enjoy the toping you're, well, waffling on about at the given moment.
