I drove an F8 and an EVO RWD back to back. The F8 is better damped, has better steering feel, more nimble, has more storage and was faster. But it was the EVO that stole my heart and the one I couldn't stop thinking about after. The naturally aspirated V10 transplanted from the Performante is breathtaking and truly makes the driving experience unforgettable. The EVO connects with you on an emotional level and doesn't let go. It was an EVO RWD Spyder that got my order.
I'm a subscriber because I usually appreciate the honesty and viewpoints but I thought this review was way overly critical and was unfair on a number of points:
Sport Seats: They angle at the lumbar, so if you like to angle the seats back without angling the bottom they will cause backpain. Angling the seat bottom to max and seat back as much as comfortable resolves any back issues. Alternatively they do offer comfort seats albeit with less leg room in spyder variants
Too stiff: It was touched on briefly but going with the 19" wheels gives notable increase in sidewall and therefore compliance
Shifts up at redline: Ferrari also does this in sport mode. (My F430 does anyways)
    Its not ergonomic/practical/cheap: It's a lambo...
Competition: Not a fan of McLaren's for their turbo lag and agricultural exhaust note, Porsche Turbo is fast but boring. While R8 has similar components it is not nearly in the same state of tune or as engaging to drive. F8 as mentioned above is a better car on paper, but just doesn't offer the same emotional attachment
Overall I felt that there was way too much emphasis on the negatives and not nearly enough on the positives. With manufacturers all downsizing, turbocharging, hybridizing, and electrifying, this is literally the end of the line for cars like these. Cars like this deserve to be celebrated while we still can enjoy them.

Very late reply, but I agree. This channel offers a lot of honest insight but sometimes it seems that the negative aspects, however minor, are way overblown. I like the content, but damn if this guy doesn’t sound like the stereotypical, adenoidal “automotive enthusiast” the top gear trio used to make fun of.

Sound reply and I completely agree. I’m also a subscriber and have owned my (almost) new lynx grey rwd on 20” rims for just over a month and 600miles covered. I used to own an F12 and a number of 911s in the past including 12 years of Lotus ownership in various guises. This rwd Huracan has so far given me a level of enjoyment reminiscent of my early Lotus days (probably because of the seating position and angle given I’m 6ft3) but with an added sense of occasion. This review is way too negative. Sorry James

Out of about 20 auto journalists JM was the only one literally that had to comment about the lack of creature comforts etc. I ordered one and cannot wait to drive it. I have driven everything else including F8, have owned Mclaren have owned Porsche Turbo. My one hour spent in this evil rear wheel drive absolutely blew me away I ordered it and specked it the way I think it will suit me best, and the last thing I can guarantee you is that I will be nitpicking about creature comforts inside this car. This car has soul unlike 99% of the cars on the market today. Long live!

Jay, having just ordered an Evo RWD coupe you scared the crap out of me for a good while there. While I also considered an NSX and an F8/488 (and currently driving an Evora GT thanks in no small part to you) I wanted to mention the prices and decision making in case anyone else is contemplating a similar move.
Here in the states most EVO colors that you'd want are $14K. I skipped that and went with the free Rosso Mars. While I share your proclivity for the even more Skittle like colors, this red being interesting enough and free allowed me to spec the comfort and electric seats (with Lumbar and heat that I think may have at least partially allayed your complaint), The Drivers+Lifestyle (Mag Ride, 3 years maintenance, carbon brakes, forged wheels at a discount, transparent bonnet, front lift), the better radio, and a really nice two tone beige and black interior (Terra Efire) with contrast stitch for price with delivery of $238,000.
I actually had a deposit for an R8 RWD allocation (thanks to your video), but the model year 2022 changeover saw a new exhaust option thats a must have, higher general price, and no discounts due to supply. R8 resale being what it is, loosing the typical 5%+ discount on an order made it less appealing than ever. That put my R8 RWD at near as makes no difference around $70K less than my loaded EVO RWD build. On top of the R8, the Lambo offers the lift, mag ride, carbon brakes, and 3 years of maintenance that you either can't get or would have cost me even more on the Audi (further closing the price gap).
Having had a 458, I adore Ferrari and would have jumped back in. But at least here in the across the pond, a conservatively equipped F8 Tributo (skipping all the senseless carbon BS) still easily gets well in the 300s. My build which is comparable to the EVO is about $320,000 and the way I actually would have wanted to order it puts it close to an even $100K more than the Lamborghini. True, the Ferrari comes with 4 more years or maintenance but otherwise thats at relative spec parity.
Furthermore, even having a good relationship with my Ferrari dealer, the wait is about 1.5 yrs at the moment for an F8 Berlinetta, vs 4-6 months for the Lamborghini. With the secondhand market so insane at present, even 2018 488s are asking more than the brand new Lamborghini order (for that matter, used Huracan EVOs are asking $30K over MSRP for the impatient, and dealers are asking up to $50K over on inventory cars for the impatient. Thankfully true to their reputation, Lamborghini dealers are simply asking MSRP for orders).
I also have to admit that I while I plan to keep and enjoy the car, the idea of total ownership cost of the F8 vs the Huracan can't help but bring up the last of the NA V10s vs another modern turbocharged mill. Now, I absolutely believe the 488/F8 engine is still incredibly special, but I think in the ethos of the 458s currently being so sought after, the EVO with the last of the NA V10s will likewise be of similar intrigue going forward.
NSX is/was very tempting but I'm a child and the noise did it.
Anyway Jay, thanks for the great insight and for being charismatic enough to make me stick around until the end of the video lest I wallow in despair for having purchased a car without your stamp of approval (no sarcasm intended). Having a car Clarskon, Metcalfe, JayEMM, and Harris approved means a lot to me.
Oh and I as a quick aside, while the screen in the EVO is a pain in the ass, volume can be controlled in any window/at any time by simply touching the screen with two fingers and moving up and down. Still would prefer a button, but way less of a faff that way.
    Cheers.

I think you should feel good about your purchase. Having driven the F8, and what a beautiful, magnificent car it is, at the end of the day the Lambos V10 trumps all the niceties of the Ferrari (and I’m a Ferrari fanatic). As far as I’m concerned, Ferrari magic is truly found in their V12 models anyway which id take over the Aventador in a heartbeat

This seemed like a really good review to me, an honest summing up of the good and bad points which a future buyer would appreciate considering no other journos tell you enough of this detail. Harry’s Garage is the closest. Having owned super cars I really agree with 2 points:
firstly you must be able to custom control all the sports stuff and not be grouped together. Usually you want the twitchy steering and throttle response, but on UK roads you want the softest suspension and not the sports exhaust as it’s too unsociable. You often can’t get this combination sadly.
The second issue is this maddening fashion of using a touch screen instead of buttons on all modern expensive cars. It is so irritating and downright dangerous as you have to keep looking away from the road for too long. I had a McLaren 540 and it was awful trying to drive whilst changing anything from the radio to heated seats to the sat nav. PLEASE all manufacturers bring buttons back!!!

Great review - and I agree with your comments about ultimate speed being largely irrelevant these days. You can only go so fast on public roads - not just in a straight line but around corners too. Most decent hot hatches will peddle down a twisty road as fast as a supercar because the opportunities for extended full-bore acceleration are almost non-existent, and the road-holding on modern tyres mean that both will happily scoot around corners far faster than it's safe to do. What really matters is how the car looks, feels, sounds and engages whilst doing it. It's great to hear that Lambo have made another spectacular drivers car - but a little frustrating to hear of so many silly/careless ergonomic and usability issues that could have been sorted with little to zero cost and just a little thought. But then again, I hear that exhaust note and could probably forgive everything!

I am bloody sick of car makers making the dash touch-only. Stop aping Tesla! It's a bad design! The AC and music controls should be tactile so that people don't take their eyes off the road. I don't care how good your touchscreen UI is (they usually aren't any good), a screen is no match for a dial or a knob.
I'm just waiting for one of these companies to remove the steering wheel and replace it with a touchscreen. You know they'll bloody do it too.

I like how both the engine and transmission in the Huracan/R8 are in perfect synch. Yes the pops pop like clockwork. What I do not like about the Ferrari's is that there is drive train slop in automatic mode and while the manual shifts are fast there is a 'sponginess' to them whether operating a V12 dual clutch or V6 hybrid (296 GTB). To me this spells that somewhere in the drive train, the Ferraris will need more attention in terms of service. I would prefer the products of the tractor maker who saw at the outset that Ferrari does have weak links of cheesiness, aside from the fact that Ferrari's engineers focus more on racing performance.

Not sure I agree about folding hard tops being essential. I don't really like the not-quite-pure-coupe look they give whereas fabric is unapologetically a cabrio. I don't know how you care for fabric in the long term though being outside and sometimes damp etc.
Anyway agree about cabrio being great for this car, rarely hear opinion that slats are better for the coupe but agree, and heard this optional glass rear will fog under some circumstances. Glad you gave a proper opinion on the ceramics (this car comes standard with steel). I watched another TH-camr on this same car recently who said 'you want to get the ceramics'. Seemed to be in a section where he might be thinking about resale, but he didn't justify it properly he just seemed to think it was the cool thing to say.
Edit: while on that subject, are (some other) TH-camrs paid to sell ceramics? They often exaggerate the benefits, talk about fade like the road's a racetrack, and refer to the option cost. Uh hello! What about the cost when the service department says you need a full new set of discs?!

I don't like black wheels. They always look cheap to me, like some chavvy kid has spray painted his wheels with a can of cheap paint. I also love the fact the center touch screen is covered in finger marks and the black plastic trim next to it is covered in dust. Blank switches at this price point is unforgivable, they should be removed entirely if you haven't ticked the box for that feature. You get blanked switches in a Fiesta not in an Italian sports car.

    • @sparky4878
      @sparky4878 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Agree on the black wheels. Look cheap and make it harder to see the pattern of the alloy. Admittedly one of my cars has black alloys. Previous owner fitted them. I need to get around to having them painted, I like the wheel they chose just not the colour. If was a more common car I’d have looked for another example.
I also hate touchscreens. Look cheap and naff.

Not convinced about the looks. Weirdly I think the Spyder actually looks better. The Gallardo was much better looking, inside and out, except for the run-out facelift model. Can't argue with the way a Performante reportedly drives, though, or the superiority of the dual clutch over e-gear. I hope the Aventador replacement is a step in the right direction, design-wise, but I know I will be disappointed. God I miss Bertone...
