Avoid the word "very" it is a really useful way to improve vocabulary. I've been doing it since I watched 'Dead Poets society' movie and Robin Williams said to his students “So avoid using the word ‘very’ because it’s lazy. A man is not very tired, he is exhausted. Don’t use very sad, use morose. Language was invented for one reason, boys - to woo women - and, in that endeavor, laziness will not do. It also won’t do in your essays.”

    1) Students are more motivated when they choose materials they find interesting.
    2) Build vocabulary lists using clusters for each topic.
    3) Use subtitles for watching movies. Focus on common phrases people use to speak to one another.
    5) Follow Lucy's advice about synonyms.
    6) Believe in yourself!

to be honest, my greatest advice is more exposure. you have to listen more, read more and use the language more. don't be afraid to go to the extent of speaking to yourself in english (i even do little vlog things in english so that i use the language more)
feel free to ask more specific things because i have no idea if that helped :D

try to exposure to the lenguages by watching videos about the things that you like, and watch them with subtitles, when you encounter with a new word that you don't know its meaning, write it on your notes,i'm going to tell you one tool that i have been using for almost 2 months and everyday i'm learning around 25 or 30 words, that is this one:
download google translator, (of course i would be better if you download it in your phone), then use the translator for take note of the words that you don't know, everytime when you just have written one word, it will stay in a list that is below the translator (the limit for put words is around 35, i guess) and then when you have finished of writting new words, try to memorize all the words that you have written, i'm doing this method everyday and it is useful for me.
just remember that the last words that are in the list will be replaced continously while new words are appearing at the top of the list.

I love your lessons, Lucy. This video is very/truly helpful and I'm going to say this: it bothers me that lots of channels that are focused in teaching English have at least one video with this kind of title 'tips for you to improve your English' and after clicking to watch the content I hear ''listen to music, watch films in your mother tongue and then with subtitles until you are able to watch them without subtitles. Read books in English' and just it. Some teachers at least indicate books and TV series that are easy to understand. But in this video you mention some important tips. I started studying English in 2014 and during this year my vocabulary increased very little because I thought that only translating words from Brazilian Portuguese to English would make me improve my skills in my second language. Now I train my mind to memorise synonyms. The word burn, for example, I've learnet its synonyms: Toast, scorch, incinerate ( this one is similar to Portuguese 'incinerar'), light, melt, etc. This made me improve my vocabulary noticeably. Greetings from Brazil :)

Hi Lucy! To widen my vocabulary is sth I've been working on for a couple of months. At the very beginning, I didn't know how to start. Then, I started looking the dictionary I have up and selecting interesting words. I wrote them down on a microsoft word 'paper' and then looked word families up. For instance, I had wrote down 'Familiar with', then I added familiarise with, familiarity with and so on. I have tons of words to study - hundreds for each letter. Step by step I've been doing that, and despite the fact I am bound not to remember them all, I have already picked some up: what I mean is that, perhaps I forget about 75% of those words, but 25% of - for instance - 3000 words altogether (of which existence I wasn't aware ) are in any case a a large number. For example, I've learnt words like efface, elicit, beguile sb into (doing) sth - and 7 ways to say the same thing, unfortunately -. I don't know If I got my point across...I hope I did :D By the way, I'm italian. Should you need help in learning new things on the subject, let me know ahahha! and well, I've been doing all this endeavour to pass Cae...my godness :/

As long as I adore Aly, I'm glad that you are back as yourself!! Your advice are great!! I think it's what you unconsciously refer to in the video, but I think it's a great idea to read something specific to your job: I mean I am an accountant so it would be helpful to read some books or whatever about accounting in English or German in order to improve my vocabulary! And I need to know technical lexicon if I don't want to look "stupid". Don't you think?

I often use 'quite', 'fairly', 'really' as alternatives to 'very', and 'as' helps avoid 'like' in some situations.
And obiously, recording yourself is the most effective way to point out words that you use too much.
Thanks for today's lesson, [VERY] interesting as always.

I just know some of your synonyms suggested! In the pair of words expressing the feeling of angry, I don't even know any of those! I really need to expand my vocabulary bank. For example, in my writing exams, when I want to say something is famous, I just know well-known and that's it. But now I know celebrated, acclaimed etc. I know they may not share the exact same meaning, but they can still be alternatives to describe a person. With a sophisticatedly wide range of vocabulary, I can score higher in the criterion of language.
