As a native English speaker who has spent years deliberately acquiring new vocabulary & improving existing grammar, I have never heard the word "muggy" before in my life (or at least that I remember). I hope that makes all of you non-native speakers feel better, because you truly never stop learning in any language.

I learn whole sentences saying them aloud. 5 days - 300 repetitions per day at least. Later I don't need to translate. I know the meaning of words straight away like in my native language. And also I remember the meaning longer than by learning separate words. This method is called: chunking. It was a real game changer in my learning process and communication skills in English and other languages.😊

My tips of stuff that hasn't been mentioned:
-listen to music in your chosen language, it hurts so much less if there is rhythm to it
-read your favourite comics in the language you want to learn, the images will help you with learning through context
-watch your favourite tv series in your chosen language
-play video games (if you like those) in the chosen language
My think always translating for another language , this is fault or not?
And don't forget to change the default language on your laptop, desktop, mobile phone, smart tv, and - in your browser (then it will try to offer localized version for many websites)

hello I'm a native spanish speaker but I also speak English, German, French and Italian, so a really useful way for me to immerse myself in those new languages was to label everything around me so when I look at them I could call them in my mind in that other language, so I hope that can help someone out there! 😉
Monique Diaz exactly the languages I am learning aswell! Did you learn them 1 by 1? I am a bit impatient so currently each day of the week I try to work on a different language. My focus was before on Spanish scince I like to travel to Spain and South America. What people tend to forget it just takes alot of effort and time! Sure tips are handy but in the end you will find yourself working hard if you want to become fluent. En cualquier caso.. Quizás practicamos juntos en un manera? Vielleicht eine Tag Italienisch.. E un altro giorno francese.. C'est juste une idée;)
Christiaan Haesen I'm absolutely agree with you, it requires a lot of time and effort but I think it's very rewarding. In my case I started learning English since I was little, then I continued with Italian but I started focusing more on German and French... And Spanish is my mother tongue. At the end of the day I think it's something easy to do because German is similar to English and Spanish, Italian and French are almost the same. So good luck! And nice to meet you! And yes, it would be very interesting to speak in a different language each time 😉

I just watched your video about translating in the head when speaking a foreign language. You’re absolutely right! I figured it out some 40 years ago, when I migrated from my native Poland to Germany. I needed to become fluent in German as soon as possible, and I came to the same idea, that translating just won’t work. I started to memorise the names of things without translating into polish, and it worked just fine. I did the same after I migrated to New Zealand over 30 years ago, and have the same success. Congratulations on your method.

This is a brilliant video and a very useful one, too. I can confirm that what you have advised in it has worked for me nicely. I got rid of the habit of translating in my head a long while ago, and I did that by following exactly the practices you have shared with us here.
There is still one more thing I would like to add. This is a lot of reading, which goes a long way towards improving your vocabulary, and is one of the many ways of immersing yourself deep into the language and cultural environment. The effect of this is redoubled when combined with listening to the audio version of the text you are reading.

after 5 years of uploading this video,I've just come across with it right now.But,I do these things with myself from the beginning of my learning journey. Indeed,it's such an authentic way to learn other language.
I think directly in English when I speak/write/watch movies/play video games. If some one asks me to translate an English text to them I can't, even if I understand it perfectly in my head. This is how my English teacher tought me in high school, think directly in English and don't translate. Best english teacher I had, learned more in 4 years than in 8 :)) . That's it how I want to learn Japanese, not via translation but the same way a kid lears to talk when he/she is young, but not many teachers, even private(1-1 leasons) can't do it righ and they don't have patience so have to try by myself :(. Here in Romania 32 outside at mid day, 23 inside due too AC.

I know my English isn't perfect but someday I'm going to speak it fluenty!
The same happens to me! I've learned 85% of my English without translating it from Spanish (my native tongue) and when friends or family ask me to translate a text for them I find it so hard, especially after not doing it for a while. I guess interpreters and translators develop a specific skill for that.
Here in Chile, it's about 3ºC (winter time! haha).
Maybe you can't literally translate it but you can try to just explain it.
Exactly, that's what you've got to do. I think translators and interpreters develop another skill as well. But with practice, it gets easier!

Hello dear Lucy, I concur what you said about stop translating in your own language. I am a linguist in Afghanistan and work for the NATO forces. I speak Dari, Farsi, Tajik , Pashtu, Russian, Urdu and English languages.Long time ago when I stopped translating in my head I was able to pick the language so fast. I’ve been thinking a lot about this subject since I started learning Spanish several years ago. I think it is safe to say that you stop translating in your head once a word becomes familiar. For example, if I hear ‘perro’ or ‘casa’, I automatically visualise what they are because they are two of the first words I learnt and are used very often. It is like if a new word enters your own language then you eventually become familiar with it and don’t need to keep referring to other words for what it is. Dog, hound, mutt, perro mean much the same to me now as do house, home and casa.

I understand what you say, but i have to do more practice in conversation. What you said is true for me. I learned the grammar in my school. Now after many times i listen video only in english without subtitle, i understand more the conversation and where i don't understand i put the word in the context.
But, i learn a bit Spanish for myself only seeing videos and trying to comments in that language and in some moments i think in that language. I think that the similarity of some language (italian, spanish) help to learn more fast.
I'm very pleased to find out your channel. When you said "you've got to hear yourself speaking out loud" I remembered that I did it and it worked out.
Leaners just got to do it daily and get use to it. At first, it was sort of annoying but I thik that I put myself into the advanced leaners line.

This English lesson is great because I do speak out loud always when I'm in the car going to work or from work going back to the house. Oftentimes I talk to myself in English while in the car, and it's true that I could sometime hear my errors in English but it was quite okay. I do talking most of the time when I'm alone inside the car as part of my every day training in English. Thanks!
When I start searching something on you tube , there comes Lucy and I get lost while watching her facial expressions n beauty , not realizing for what I am watching you tube. What a magnetising aura this sweet girl has got. I could utilise only seventy percent time for watching her rather than learning pronunciation. Lucy , you are the messmerising beauty outshining even Hollywood's actresses terribly. Moreover , I am your Indian fan who comes from Brahman community of Hindu.
Thank you, Lucy. What helped me was literally talking to myself every day doing everyday cores. The second thing I did was reading out loud to myself (especially I enjoyed dialogues, because I could use different voices:)

As someone who has been learning English for 20 years and using for it for 10 years, I think the key for really mastering a foreign language is internalization of new words, phrases and expressions in terms of their meanings and usages, so that when you’re placed in a certain context, your first instinct will go to the right word, phrase or expression, and it just comes out of your mouth smoothly and naturally without any hesitation as to whether or not you’re saying it correctly. And it doesn’t matter if you learn it based on the translation or the explanation in English.

I have always "believed" in English. Despite having no access to it when I was a kid, I started learning it when I was 12. I bought a self-study book and just started doing exercises. Then I had different experiences with, enrolled for courses, took private lessons, worked for non-profit organization and used English in real life, started to study English at university and so on and on. However, the most important for me has always been the mindset -- I have always believed English would be my ticket to a better world and open many doors, which it did :) I don't even remember when exactly I "switched" my thinking from Polish to English. It sort of clicked on its own.

Hi Lucy! I'm from Russia and I'm fluent in English. I mastered it practically on my own and I applied all of the methods you have proposed in your video and I can prove you are absolutely right! Now I'm trying to master Italian and Spanish. At first I achieved some results in Italian and after that started to study Spanish and the biggest problem for me now is the mixture of the two languages for they have a lot in common. For instance, I can start a phrase in Spanish and finish it in Italian :) Such a weird thing may happen to me... Anyway, it's a lot of fun to master other languages and it also gives us more confidence and self-esteem. BTW, I have heard you speaking Spanish with a glass of red wine and you sounded amazing and extremely natural! It was noticable how your personality changed when you "turned into" una chica Espanola :) I'm wishing all the best one can wish! You are very beautiful, smart and charismatic! )))

@@michaelhawkins1528 while knowing japanese would be amazing its a lot more difficult in my opinion than learning Korean, simply because Korean has an alphabet and while Japanese has the kana, they also rely on Kanji quite a lot (not as much as Chinese which im pretty sure is all kanji)

I totally agree with you when you're saying that we should learn vocabulary with a "monolingual dictionary", and that speaking to oneself out loud helps a lot! Your videos seem to be very useful!
By the way, very good learning tips, I normally practice them all and it's been quite helpful for the 5 languages I speak. (Spanish, English, French, Italian, & German).
I personally found a lot of help in forcing myself to think in English. I don't know if this will work at older ages since I started this at the age of 6, but I set my computer to English and all the installations I had to do I always picked English. Now I had to struggle through those for a good few years until I completely understood what I was doing but by previously having done this proces in Dutch I could make up alot of definitions from context and location of the buttons for example. This way I forced myself to translate the English langauge directly into a physical output on my screen rather than translating it to Dutch first. I must admit when I have an English spoken/written course these days I find it incredibly hard to answer in Dutch (so I don't, English answers are allowed) but this does go to proof that I do think in English instead of translating first eversince.

I perfectly understand almost your every single word but when I speak it's different. Often I try to train myself to think english and I can. But sometimes, I have to think the english grammar structure first of all for the advanced grammar. But I know if I do it day by day this, will become easy. I am agree with your tips.
