*_QUESTION_* - Have you ever come close to missing a cruise? What happened?
Never. We always follow your advice.😁
Never - we are always early
Never. Always there early.
No, luckily. Came close once, due to snow in Chicago, but I was still able to fly out the day before, just delayed.
Missed cruise..no
Almost missed plane home. Yes
But that wouldn't bother me for the most part.
My sister just missed her cruise. I told her fly in the day before.. but what did she say "ive never had a problem with my flight" famous last words
I would be crushed if I missed my cruise 😢. I feel very sorry for anyone who misses their cruise. Especially if it’s beyond their control
Same same same! It's so AWFUL for ANYONE even if that person's fault... Just awful!! 😢 I'm sure they are terrified.. I know I would be 😫
I feel sorry for anyone missing their cruise for something beyond their control. I have zero sympathy for anyone missing their cruise because of something they had control over.
Some years ago my son and daughter in law booked a surprise cruise for the 4 of us. I suggested we went down the day before. My son said it wasn’t necessary as it was only 4hrs down the M4 from home. After the promise of a night in a very good hotel, he agreed. We were talking to some other passengers from our area and they had come down that day and nearly missed the ship as there was an incident on the M4 that had closed the motorway for quite a while and they were beginning to panic! They did just make it in time, but it was a lesson to us all : Go Down The Day Before!
Flying from Oregon to Brisbane in February to sail on the Coral Princess. I fly in 2 days early just in case I experience delayed/cancelled flights!! Sailing around the UK/Ireland next August - I already booked reservations to fly in 3 days early for that one. Missing embarkation would be my worst nightmare, so the expense of going early, at least for me, is priceless!
I had a dream last night that my husband got off the ship to make a Costco run and didn’t make it back to the ship on time.
Hey Tony, I live a short 3 1/2 to 4 Hour drive, typically from the Galveston cruise port. We always drive down the day before and get a hotel. We used to drive the morning of, but it was always so hectic. I firmly believe in getting there a day early now it is so much more relaxing and enjoyable.
Tony, I once flew the same day as my cruise on Carnival and my plane was indeed delayed. However, I had booked on the Carnival shuttle from the airport to the cruise terminal. Because I had done that I was literally whisked through the airport by a representative to a side entrance of the airport to a waiting shuttle bus along with a bunch of other folks in my situation. Carnival then contacted my wife by phone to make sure we were on said shuttle. When we got to the ship we were passed through the embarkation process in literally minutes and on the ship we went to our cabin where I met my brother who had arrived hours earlier. I did have travel insurance (you don't want to have a medical event not covered on a cruise) and all my travel was booked with the cruise line. I always do it this way when I leave from Florida. When I sail from Galveston (I live in Texas) I go the night before and stay at a hotel. This is how I have done it for years now and it always works for me.
I've heard stories of people arriving at the airport or cruise terminal only to discover that they left their passport or other documents on the kitchen counter. One way to solve that issue is to show your passport, plane & cruise boarding passes and any other documents to your car or uber driver after locking up your house. You can easily go back and get them if you don't have them in hand. Do the same when leaving your hotel to embark. You'll be sure that your docs are on your person and not in your checked luggage.
Traveling in from Canada I always bookend the cruise with two days ahead and one day after. So much safer for ensuring smooth embarkation and so much less travel stress on disembarkation. It’s just part of the holiday. All the best Tony!
Always a terrible idea to travel same day! Even when we only had to drive 5 hours to the port we still left a whole day in advance to ensure we were there. My stress and anxiety will not let me go morning of lol
On our big family cruise, by brother-in-law and his wife drove to the port (4 hour drive). On the way, the car in front of them hit a dog, which was hurt but survived. They had to stop and then find someone to care of the dog. They arrived at the cruise port 5 minutes before the cruise line stopped taking cruisers. My wife was very worried. Fortunately, all's well that ends well. The cruise line let them board (the last boarding passengers).
I’m going on my first cruise in 2024 and we’ll be driving to Galveston and getting a hotel the day before our cruise. I’ve seen too many videos talking about people missing their cruise because they didn’t leave for until the day of and ended up being delayed for one reason or another. Not me! I have been looking forward to this for almost a year already and have put so much energy into to planning.
We missed our cruise due to a weather meltdown. And yes we were leaving a day before the cruise and NO ONE was getting out on either day. This is why travel insurance is so important
Not to mention that the drive from LAX to the cruise port is so far and that’s without factoring in LA traffic. Definitely traveling the day before your cruise departs is the smart way to go (along with purchasing insurance)
Many cruises ago, we almost had a similar situation when our flight out was delayed a LOT. But we were able to rebook and get on the flight to San Juan we originally wanted. Never again.
I can drive to my home port (Tampa), only 45 minutes, but I choose to uber because if the car breaks down, get a flat tire, etc, I can change ubers but I can't change my car. I also have a cheat sheet for traveling. It includes a page with 2 sections: 24 hrs before the cruise (things like : double check bag w credit cards, passport, wash all laundry, nails, hair, etc) and before I leave section (empty trash, house keys, etc). I have a travel crossbag and the day before, if not more, I make sure all travel documents, cc, momey, etc, are there.
I don't even do the 1 day prior, anymore, especially since I fly out of EWR. There was one cruise we were taking in January 2018, out of Miami, where I decided we should go to Florida 3 days earlier and visit my uncle in the area. That choice saved us. The NYC area was hit with a huge snow and ice storm and flights were grounded on the day before our cruise; several of our fellow cruises had to suddenly switch to Amtrak in order to get to Miami on time. So now I build in 2 days ahead as part of the vacation in the other 3 seasons and 3 days prior in the winter.
Tony, it's still amazing how many people try and travel in, the same day as the cruise. This has to remain the biggest enigma that continues to take place. Get there at least a day early, to relax, sight see and have peace of mind.
I remember on my carnival cruise, I had to throw away my water, and hand over my powerboard, thankfully I was able to still get on.
I heard the missed boarding passenger flew from Flagstaff AZ where there is only one flight a day to LAX. I commented before that we took a flight to LAX out of our little airport (an hour south of Flagstaff) that also only has one flight a day to LAX. Because of having only one flight a day, we flew two days early. Good thing because the next days flight did get canceled.
That 24 weeks pregnant cut-off stems from Neonatologists belief that a 24 weeker( baby) can potentially survive if placed in a NICU (neonatal ICU) for care. Cruise ships don’t have that capability and do not want the potential liability.
Hey Tony, I went to pay for my 2024 cruise. I'm sitting with my TA and she's talking to CCL to pay. When she's talking I'm thinking hmmm this ain't right. She paid off my 2025 cruises! Not my 2024 cruises. Both B2B. I get home, and check my paperwork, and called them . DOH! I need a new TA. So make sure they're paying off the right cruise people. I've been lucky and flown in the day of, but no more.
Great show today. Not a lot of unnecessary talk. Straight to the point. 😅😅😅😅😅
Feel better?
Yes. Going back to 2021 during restart of cruises we had a flight day before cruise however flight got cancelled and had to get last minute flight on day of. Got to Orlando after an hour delay and grabbed a taxi to port. We made it but got dropped off at wrong port. Anyhow we got someone “Mike” from carnival to take us and another passenger in The same predicament to the right port in His small jeep. 🤣 we made it with 10 minutes to spare before the gangway closed!
That's so sad... that lady was heartbroken! Also, I like the background today!
This is why we always check in at 10am and always make sure we're nearby as early as possible.
You may be able to cruise on a birth certificate and a driver license, but get a passport. What if you miss the ship or have an medical emergency in a foreign port? You'll need a passport to fly home.
Even Mexico just charged this rule. No more birth certificate, you must have an actual passport book now. They are no longer taking passport cards either.
We've had a passport book for years. It's the only way to travel.
@@machellep1when did they change this? I don't have a passport and I'm cruising with a birth certificate and id in february. I checked with the cruise line to make sure it was okay before paying it off in September. That's the only reason I booked it
@@marivega3294 i don’t know if it’s only the cruise I’m on. I’d check with your cruise line. I got an email saying passport required, but the site says Mexican Rivera is still birth certificates, but I’m on the California side sailing out of LA. It might be just those cruises, I’m not sure.
@machellep1 I'll have to check.i haven't gotten any emails though. I am sailing to the Mexican Riviera from San Francisco lol. Which cruise line are you using? Mine is princess
Im one of those people that if Im not a half hour early, Im late. If I was cruising solo, I would probably be at the terminal before the ship docked. Thats just me.
I remember flying across country from the west coast to Ft. Lauderdale through Phoenix in January 2005, we arrived a day before departure. Due to a snow storm in Chicago (and by the third day of our cruise), we arrived in Aruba and noticed 20+ people with suitcases standing on the dock who had missed embarkation because their flight was delayed!! Please take Tony's advice, fly in a day before your cruise! Love your videos, Tony!!❤
In southern California there are two cruise ports across a bridge from each other. An Uber driver took us to the wrong port and when we arrived at the correct port the gate had JUST closed. Same as the lady in your video. It took MUCH pleading and the fact that a group at the gate with us had already checked in but left the terminal for lunch before we were finally able to get in. We almost missed our cruise. The hardest part was seeing the ship right there for 45 minutes and not being allowed to just go thru the gate. :(
Yep, always check San Pedro vs Long Beach before the driving starts. The driver probably doesn't read destination addresses.
We always fly in the day before & try to book flights early enough so even if there is a delay, we won't be pressed for time. Then we also board the ship at the earliest time available, you never know how traffic will be even driving 15-20 minutes away. It's great that she had travel insurance because there are people who feel like they don't need it.
Our group travels from all over the US and Canada to cruise. We always fly the day before. One time one of the couples had a cancelled flight then, rescheduled for the day of the cruise via a connecting flight. They made the ship with about an hour to spare. They were very sressed, but happy to make it.
We have a few pages of note list sheets we put together for all our cruise that we put in every cruise we take. I have our cruises on my phone in my photo gallery. I make a folder on each cruise with photos of all paperwork and our to do list and things to bring. I add photos of our boarding pass and other items as i get them including every excursion we have booked also our drink and dinning package receipts our airline receipts and copys of our passports in every photo gallery for that cruise at that time. I take a picture of each ship and use that as the header per folder. That way i have every cruise at a glance. We always get there 2 days beforehand and we get to the port 3 hrs earlier then our time. For us it just works.
2016 royal princess... Flew in from Chicago (feb) same day ...made it to port at 3pm...never again..day or two before for us..
Concur Tony! I always tell folks, if you feel it's worth risking your entire vacation over one night hotel stay and a couple of meals that go with it, that's your prerogative. Many people have traveled the day of the cruise and been fine, but all it takes is that one time and that's all she wrote. Bottom line, get in a day early. Pay for the hotel (If you go to Drury, you get free dinner and breakfast next morning and they are actually good!) and get that peace of mind to know you are going to make it on that boat.
About 20 years ago I booked a cruise out of Bayonne. Since I lived only about a 2 hour drive from the port I decided to drive there the day of embarkation, giving myself a good hour plus of wiggle room, just in case. Well, just in case happened - at the NJ Turnpike exit for the port, immediately past the toll booths, every lane of traffic simply stopped. Folks were sitting on their hoods smoking, wandering around, etc. We sat there for nearly an hour when suddenly a lane opened to my right (to this day I still don't know how or why) and I was able to weave through about 6 lanes of traffic to go in an entirely different direction than originally intended. I eventually arrived at the terminal, and was the last person checked in. The representative told me she would take me out of "no-show," and put me in "showed up." We took the shuttle to the ship (this was before the terminal was directly next to the dock) and I was so flustered that I got up, leaving my travel documents behind! So I was able to board the ship, but without a passport I'd have been unable to reenter the country (again, this was prior to facial recognition machines so physical presentation of passports was required). Fortunately the crew radioed the shuttle driver and my documents were retrieved and returned before sailing, but lesson learned. Now even if I am within driving distance of the port we ALWAYS arrive at least a day before embarkation and stay locally in a hotel.
I'd be really distraught if I missed my cruise. My family and myself are going on the Discovery Princess next Tuesday for the West Coast Getaway. Arriving a day or two early is really important, cause it saves the trouble to be late. Hopefully, next time, we can really plan ahead.
Number 6, way to miss your cruise.
We booked a family cruise. Our daughter-in-law was pregnant. We discovered that you cannot take a small baby on a cruise. All in nine of us cancelled. We will be going next year when our granddaughter is a year old.
Thank you Tony for the cruise news. 😊
Thanks for this informative video!!
It's good to see these kinds of videos in between cruise news....
Hi Tony. WOW, thank you for sharing this information. Some of it I had no idea. 😁
I have friends that actually flew from Boston to Orlando the same day and landed at 3pm and STILL MADE THE CRUISE 😮
On the missed Cruise due to the delayed flight they should probably have contacted the Cruise company at the embarkation port and explained. They might have still be able to join as they were aware that they are likely still to arrive before the departure time. No guarantee but at least a bigger chance.
To go with that, if you book your airline tickets through the cruise line, they will usually wait for you. Not sure if they changed that, but it used to be.
All great tips! I follow them all religiously!
Great examples of what not to do!!!!
Cruising out of San Francisco to Alaska next June and, while videos like this are making me nervous, we ARE driving up the same day. It's a two-hour drive. We are taking our family (11 people) and there is just no way we want to add the cost of at least three San Francisco hotel rooms to our budget. We'll be taking three or four cars and if one breaks down, there will be room for us amongst the other three. If all FOUR break down...we'll take Uber or Lyft or catch a Greyhound. If we can't make it that way...then maybe karma is telling us it's not safe to get on that ship!
Happy Thursday Tony ..
Great video ❤❤❤❤
Great tips to live/vacation by.
Thanks, excellent advice
This was a very well done video.
Amen Tony I tell my clients, flying in a day before is best.
Good tips...i kinda remember stumbling back from senior frogs in Cozumel with little time to spare
Ouch. I am guilty of the Phx to LA same day flier. I worry every time I do that, but not proud of the fact I have done that. Thanks again for the tips. Always good to hear.
We cruised out of Lisbon last Aug. As we were getting close to cruise time, we were on the balcony in our room and watched a family run towards the gangway, it was about 15 min of drama, they even waved them off and sent them back to the terminal. There was an officer on the phone on the deck, long story short he got the ok to let the family on, they ran all the way back and everyone on board who was watching was cheering! Lol. I felt their pain 😢
Thank you so much for your cruise news. You are kind and open. I love your moments of gratefulness. Praying for thyroid issue. Have a blessed Christmas.
Always know that you are where you are supposed to be. ❤️💯
Yep. If you are family or couple and have like 5-8 THOUSAND dollars invested in a trip , spend $200 on a hotel the night before . I could sort of understand a single who books a cheap cruise and maybe they go on many vacations a year and have flexibility taking the chance (with insurance ) on every thing going 100% and going in their trip. Maybe she just diverted to a resort for a few days then went back home . However many of us OUR CRUISE is the highlight of our vacation year and we need to make sure we make it with no issues
Excellent advice about traveling to the cruise port the day before. Thanks for the heads up just changed my flight traveling from Phoenix to San Pedro the day before. Not going to miss my cruise.LOL
Good advice T. Perhaps missing my ship, be it at the port of embarkation, or gasp, a destination port, is my biggest phobia😢
Nov 2022 at the airport in Montreal flying to Ft Lauderdale for our cruise departing the same day. The flight was delayed till the evening. No flight = no cruise. Lesson learned, fly in the day before.
Another thing I think about is winter weather and sometimes fly in 2 days before! Luckily we made our Christmas cruise last year because I did just that. A blizzard caused delayed flights and missed connections.
Hi Tony and Jenny B is always drive or fly the day before my cruise
I was stuck in traffic in the parking lot of the terminal! Almost missed my boarding time
Good morning TONY
Hey Joe!
Would hate to miss any cruise!!
We always travel a day prior! We Usually vacation in March to warmer weather from the Cold State of WI.. Never take the chance of a delay or cancellations
Heck we drive to the Galveston TX cruise port (a 2 hour drive) and we reserve a hotel for the night before the cruise.
We live in Tampa, we always go a day early even when leaving from port Canaveral or Miami.
I was going to take a half hour flight from Orlando to Miami for a cruise. It took five hours and three planes to get me there due to planes needing repair. The third plane showed up looking like it had been stored in a field of weeds for the last 10 years. We all stood there looking at it asking each other “Are you going to get on that plane?” I didn’t miss my cruise because I flew the day prior and stayed over in a hotel.
I believe I heard that the young lady was flying from Flagstaff not Scottsdale. Flagstaff has a very small airport (flew out of there once). When DH and I were both working, and we live near the Phoenix airport we would get the first flight out the day of embarkation. That usually left at 6 am and we would be in LA by 7:15 am. Now that we are both retired, we go the day before. Insurance is very important just for this reason.
Thanks!
8:33 we fly in the day of our cruise. We also book port transfers through the cruise line.
Shirley nothing could go wrong and I’ll miss my cruise! It could go wrong and quit calling me Luda😂😂😂
I was really lucky. Got to hotel in Long Beach night before and didn't realize I didn't have my passport until next morning. Got to port and tracked down my "angel" explaining my stupidity and told him my husband was driving from Vegas to bring it to me. Prior notification saved me and again, he (along with my husband) my angels. This was about 15yrs ago. Been on several since and no hiccups 😅
Fly out the day before, get a hotel. I meet people often at the airport that flight delays cause you to miss it. Especially in the winter or spring break!!!
I think maybe I am watching your videos too much. I saw a newspaper headline that read "Cruise Executives Leave Firm after Probe Into Handling Incident". At first I thought I would get some of your Cruise News early but it turned out to be about General Motors' driverless car company "Cruise" and an October car crash in California.
And one last part of #5...book your air through the cruise line! Princess offers EZair and GUARANTEES you will get to the ship on time! Another way to have peace of mind!
I through the side eyes at you when you said to make sure I am NOT pregnant..........I always enjoy you vlogs
I’m leaning more and more towards flying in 2 days early since it usually takes 2 planes to get to Florida. That would allow plenty of time… when I can travel again. 😢😭😭😭
Great show again Tony, but you are good at keeping it fresh and fun. What happens when there is a destination port change to a country nobody was prepared for. For example when the cruise lines canceled the Israeli ports and went instead to Greece? Thanks Tony.
Oooh, now that is a great question, I would like Tony to address. A change of ports, not on the itinerary. I would imagine the cruise line must be aware of those scenarios, in order to be able to dock. But that surely could become a problem; though I wonder, if, as long as you remain on the ship, you are ok?
I live in Phoenix and Sail from LA occasionally and always fly in the day before. It's only 50 minutes in the air like this ladies flight but one delay and your in trouble.
My friend and her family always fly the morning of on Frontier airline and they never get insurance. They have been doing it for years. I could NEVER, we save to stay a day before and purchase travel insurance always.
Catching a cruise that leaves 1 hr away from home helps. Hello from Vancouver BC area
I like the new background
I live in Arizona my husband's a pilot and I can tell you that if it's too hot or too windy planes will not take off it could also have to do with a delay from back east. In Arizona you just cannot depend on your plane taking off in the very hot weather that we have here, or even the monsoon time we have really bad dust storms here and flooding and horrible microbursts yes we have great weather in Tucson and Arizona but we do have problems with airplanes
Just heard this morning that flying into Brazil now requires a visa. And in their list of information needed to complete the form, they require a bank statement from your bank
Great advice, especially on #5. We ALWAYS travel the day before. Those extra 12-24 hours means everything. Airlines can do wonders IF they have some time still available. But eventually options dwindle to exactly ZERO.
Our worst experience? Flight delays (owing to the return of a deceased serviceman's remains) pushed our arrival into FLL well past 3am. We could no longer check into our budget hotel (closed front desk) so spent the wee hours in the airport's luggage carousel area w/ full permission from the sheriff. It was a challenging overnight experience. But we were never really at risk of missing the ship in the morning.
Oh yeah Tony..... If we had been at TPA we were planning on calling YOU!
You updating the office? Background today looks comfy.
OMG, I saw this video!!! The worst would be the horn blaring during embarkation. I NEVER fly in the day of. That is insane amount of unnecessary stress.
I live in Texas and cruise out of Galveston. I always drive down the day or 2 before my cruise and park 3 blocks away from the terminal so I won't miss it.
Not only travel at least the day before but stay AT the port the night before. We traveled to London, stayed there for 5 days then took a bus to Southampton THE DAY OF THE CRUISE. Big mistake! Even though our bus left a 9:30am for a 2 hour drive and our boat was departing at 4pm (gangway close at 3:30pm) due to traffic it took 6.5 hours and very nearly missed the boat. If not for an emergency situation on the boat which kept the gangway open we would have missed the boat cleanly.
I always stayed in Miami hotel 3 days before my cruise
.
Great point Tony regarding travel insurance. If you have multiple trips/cruises planned for the upcoming year, can you purchase like a blanket travel insurance policy to cover all travel for the year? If so, is it cheaper to do it this way or is it better to insure individual trips?
Even if I lived in a state close by I'd still get there the day before. I wouldn't chance driving or flying in the day of. I haven't gone on a cruise but I'm always 2.5-3 hours early for my flight, lol. I pay more for a cruise so wouldn't let that go to waste.
Use a travel agent. They will help make sure that you not only get to your ship on time, but they will walk you through all aspects of cruising.
Just like boarding a flight has a time, boarding cruise also has a time that it's closed. I like to travel to the cruise city/port a day or more prior to the cruise. My last cruise was on Celebrity out of San Pedro/Los Angeles CA. I traveled 3 days prior and stayed in Long Beach on the Queen Mary then on to the cruise on Celebrity. NO WAY was I missing this cruise. It was pricey and it was nice. At least she had travel insurance and all was not lost. Lesson learned. Even if it is a short flight, you cannot control the weather or disruptions like a plane breaking down or crew issues. Travel a day or more early to a cruise.
so glad we don't need the negative covid test!!!! thanks for the updates. love the couch. and what no carrruze hands??
I ALWAYS arrive a day before… stay at hotel & relax, in case a flight delay …. ALWAYS have checked & rechecked all my papers .. ❤
