    I'd never thought of growing orchids like this, but this seems so much easier. I gotta try it!

      Hi Twisty! I love growing my orchids this way. The water is there if they need it and they take what they need. It really makes it easy if you have a crazy number of orchids and you have no problems going on vacation. Give it a try! Let me know if you have any questions.

    Just bought Leca to transplant my orchids . Do you have to washout the Leca before put in the pot?

    • @PeggysPlants
      @PeggysPlants  ปีที่แล้ว

      You probably want to rinse it because it is quite dusty when new. I've used it without rinsing and the plants didn't seem to mind. Thanks for watching!

    Hi, it’s nice to see your orchids in swc. I’m also in swc but I put my orchids 2 days in water & 5 days dry. I put stones or rocks at the bottom so the roots won’t touch the vase. I just started a month ago & succeed in rescuing an orchid that is almost dying. It produces few new roots & a leaf starts to show up. I find yours is also a different thing so I knew it’ll help & give me some ideas. How do you fertilize your orchids with the pellets? thanks for the info.

    • @nataliesmommy303
      @nataliesmommy303 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may can do a mixture of leca and sphagnum moss to help hold more moisture

    • @PeggysPlants
      @PeggysPlants  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's natural for most of the old roots to die off when converting to leca. In time the plant will grow water roots. I usually wait for my blooms to die off before converting to leca, if I want the blooms to last long. Disturbing the plant/roots may cause the blooms to drop. Once the plant grows water roots, it will grow and bloom. However, make sure that starting off, the roots are not sitting in water. Best of luck!

    Peggy, how do you keep algae from growing on the glass and the leca? I know the algae isn't harmful but I sure hate the looks of algae!

    • @PeggysPlants
      @PeggysPlants  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the vessel is clear and light is present, there will be algae. It comes with the territory. Some people use a chemical to kill off the algea, but I can't think of the name for some reason. I simply remove the plant and clean the glass and leca.

    Love your video
    I have an orchid that has blood twice in the same year. Then I got gnats:(. I've had it just sitting on the new bark and have been debating if I should try leca. I'm going to try it. It's winter in AZ. Is there a good time that I should report into leca or.does.it matter. What kind of fertilizer do you use??

    • @PeggysPlants
      @PeggysPlants  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I tend to go against the grain when it comes to repotting. I repot whenever my plants needs it. I don't really worry about the time of year. I use the same Miracle Gro fertilizer I always use with my plants. I use it at 1/4 strength and add it to my watering can. Best of luck!

      It is recommended that you wait until the blooms have died off to transplant the orchid. That way there is less chance that the blooms will blast. However, if you need to transplant your orchid immediately, there is still a chance that the blooms will make it. I just transplanted two orchids in bloom to Leca. They are common orchids and I wasn't really concerned about keeping the blooms. Both plants were transplanted 3 weeks ago and both still have blooms and buds. If you do transplant them and want to keep the blooms, the less root manipulation the better.
