    I've had the Jmp1 for many years and it's a killer classic Marshall tone. Good speaker simulation for direct recording. Works well with a tube power amp or in a tube amp effects loop. I recommend it if you are a fan of the sound of the 90's

    Been direct with a JMP-1 since 2006, before that, used one with two 1978 heads, that Phil Wells from Marshall "modded" for me. £8 (back in 2002!) where the mod is for them to add a power amp input to the heads. Running one of my JMP-1's L+R Master Outs into each head then into two 4x12's was totally it for me for years... when I went solo, I simply just plugged the JMP-1 direct into the mixing desk. played on stages in front of thousands using nothing more than a stock JMP-1 direct to desk. Marshall really nailed the speaker simulator and just got it right with this thing. They had to discontinue the JMP-1 due to the changes in EU solder laws (switched from lead based to water based) and that would have meant completely updating their solder baths, and all the manufacturing process, so they stopped making it. Such a huge shame. You can pick them up cheap on eBay for a song right now. AxeFX, Kemper, tried them both, kept coming back to OD1 on the JMP-1. Nothing quite beats it in a live setting. In the studio I still use Amplitube 3 and 4, but more recently I am using a JMP-1 again. Marshall should bring out a JMP-2, with USB and an onboard tuner, and effects. The CODE was absolute rubbish sadly, and for those of us who can't lug about a huge transformer laden valve amp and cab anymore, this really is a good alternative.
    Despite owning numerous JMP-1's, my main one, I've had since 1997! used it every day, never went wrong, never crapped out on me. If you know how to use them (Like with any gear I guess) you can get some of the best tones around.

      I've been looking at a JMP-1 since they aren't too expensive on Reverb and I'm a big Iron Maiden (and Def Leppard as well, although I didn't know they used these too until recently). It seems like it would be fun to have next to my ADA MP-2 that I bought new 25+ years ago. Right now, it seems the only folks really using rack gear are large touring bands, so unfortunately I don't think Marshall would think there is enough of a market for a JMP-2, although I agree I would consider one.

    Classic Marshall sound, all valve / tube, and easily modernized with an additional distortion pedal - I use the Tim Pierce overdrive. Lovely how far you can get into what Dave Friedman achieved when modernizing the Marshall sound. Cheers from Germany!

    Thank you a million times. Nobody has done an in-depth look at this thing, and I’ve been interested in them ever since I discovered that Def Leppard have used them live forever (they only very recently switched to all Fractal live rigs). Every time I saw Leppard, both Phil and Viv were playing these, and the sound they got with them was always perfection to me. Marshall should have kept making this.

    I used the JMP-1 with a Bradshaw Switcher. Eventide H3000, Lexicon PCM 81, 2 SDE 3000’s, Pro VLA compressor & a Marshall 9200 or the EL 34 100/100. Compared to all my plexi’s and the old Marshall’s I have, these preamps will make you some cash. Many have also used these. They deliver whatever you want.

    I owned one of these for about 20 years with a Marshall 9200 power amp (5881 tubes). I bought them new and they served me well for a long time. It was an amazing rig. I loved the 5881 tubes. It really became fat, chunky and amazing at stage volumes in larger venues. I would get a sound somewhere between Michael Schenker and George Lynch (Tangled in the Web) just using the preamp gain and the power tube gain. The cool thing with a rig like that is that you can push the volume of the power amp separately from the preamp gain, so you can find your tone with that much more control.
    Another great thing is that I could place something like a TC Electronic G Force in the line between the JMP-1 and the 9200 power amp and that was also amazing. This also gave me the option of splitting the signal into stereo out and using both sides of the 9200 power amp separately and using stereo effects. I also used a TC Electronic D Two before I got the G Force, but I don't remember if that was run the same way or actually in the effects loop. I loved and used the midi in the JMP-1, changing amp channels and effects simultaneously, although I primarily used one aggressive amp sound and used the volume on my Les Paul to adjust that sound. On a lot of my midi settings, I had it so that the amp would stay the same and the effects would change. The JMP-1 was really well designed. I wish that they kept updating this model as they went into the higher gain era. I don't know if this is correct, but as I understand it, Marshall could no longer make the JMP-1 because of something internal that new environmental regulations made illegal. Not sure what that would have been or why there would not be an alternative. The closest amp that I have found to be a successor to that rig is the JVM410HJS. Just a great amp. It had to be for me to sell my JMP-1 and 9200.

      Another thing that I forgot to mention is that I placed Mesa 5881 Tubes in the 9200 and Mesa gives you the option of early, mid or late breakup tubes. I always went with mid. I would normally put my 9200 volumes around 6 or 7 and then control the volume of the whole rig via the volume knob on the JMP-1. I still miss that rig.

      I wouldn't say the GSP 2101 had a bad preamp at all! In fact the Saturated tube mode is electrically very similar to the Engl e530 preamp. The best way to take full advantage of it is to make all your algorithms with the 5 band parametric eq and/or the 10 band graphic the first modules in the alg and run the unit 100% wet.

    To get an AC/DC 'Low gain' sound for instance...would one use a clean channel gained up high OR OD1 with gain on say 1 or 2 ?...OR does this unit simply not do those 'Classic' Marshall sounds ( Zep, Lizzy, Purple, AC/DC etc)
    I understand this rack came out when higher gain was the rage.

    I still have all major 3 preamps of the 80s-90s. The JMP-1, the ADA MP-1 3TM and the Triaxis. Both the ADA and the Triaxis are Beasts on sound and for Metal Chunky tones, you can't go wrong. My Triaxis is my go-to "Metallica-Boogie Thrash" rig, my ADA is my go-to "Marshall-on-steroids" Thrash rig. So for years, JMP-1 (being softer and all) just wasn't cutting it for me. HOWEVER, recently I decided to setup a "Malmsteen" rig...Since a "Plexi" is out of the question (money+volume), I used the JMP-1 with a 20/20 Marshall power amp to get a Plexi-sound and used the famed DOD250 in front. And OH-MY-GOD, it just couldn't get any better. I am amazed on how convincing the JMP-1 as a "cranked Plexi" is....Compared it with all Plexi sound samples out there, it does the job brilliantly!! And with the DOD250 in front, its heaven. Early Malmsteen sounds (Marching out-Trilogy etc.) are SO spot on, you can only tell its NOT Malmsteen by.....my playing :)

    I have a special request: can you do a follow-up short video using this JMP-1 unit with a JB/Jazz humbuckers 25 frets guitar (not a Gibson nor a Stratocaster) to replicate Dave Mustaine's rhythm tone. I know he used the JMP-1 a lot in the past (early albums played LIVE) powered by the Marshall 9100 block amp. What I'd like to get are the JMP-1 settings you would use to replicate his tone as ''best'' as you can. I know it's kind of hard because he has always used a lot of effects/EQ ''mystery boxes'' to carve his sound, but if you could at least, give me a base setup, that would be great. Cheers!

    Great video. I dig your playing and presentations.
    I had one of these along w a Roland RSP-550 back in the ‘90s. Played it through a Boogie Mark IIB combo. Sounded great but wish I’d tried it through a EL34 power amp back then after hearing this video.
    I’m thinking of getting another (which is how I landed here). It’ll be mainly for recording and I’m wondering how the DI and speaker simulators sound. I’ve got the OX Amp Top Box; too but all my amps are 6L6 still. So NOW what...!!?? 🤔

      Cuppa coffee and gear talk. Great way to start the day!
      Right now I’m using an XTS Atomic Overdrive for the Marshall sound. Excellent for the JCM800 sound and more. I like their stuff.
      I’m new to recording electric. Everything before was solo acoustic, which is pretty simple compared. Interesting you’d mention the Fractal stuff. I checked out your vids on Kemper and/or Fractal. Friend of mine picked up the Kemper rack after checking them out, too. Monster engine.
      I ended up getting that UA OX. I’m pretty attached to my pedals and amps, as is. But so far I’m not getting my gear to translate well through it to my DAW. Especially the distortion stuff. I’m giving it a little more time but might do an exchange.
      I was considering the JMP-1 through the OX but see above. I’ll check out the Amplifire. Thanks for the tip.
      Btw: I really did love that JMP-1 in the ‘90s except for one very big thing: latency. Three man band with lots of patch changes...that split second of silence drove me bonkers.
      So cool that you reply, Leon. Good day to ya!

    I really like mine. Ya gotta remember that when they came out in the early '90s, they were pretty "big" for the time. These days, there's obviously a million more options. My recollection is that there wasn't much else around back then that had 100 presets, sounded as good, and was relatively affordable. There were the Boss ME 5 and ME 10 (yuck, in my opinion), the ADA (nice, but the one I had didn't have enough gain), plus there was some very expensive stuff from Soldana and Mesa Boogie, but I think they only had a few channels.
    After several years of doing gigs (just covers. LOL), one sound guy suggested DI-ing the JMP1 straight into the desk. I was dubious, because, well you know, there's no mic'ing my expensive speaker box, and "will it sounds as good as the sound I 'crafted' in my bedroom for years?', Ha ha. :-) However, DI-ing it sounded pretty good and I kept doing it every gig after that. The main benefit of this is that it's flat level, so you can fark around with your stage volume without the sound guy knowing, unless you blast everyone else out of the room. :-) Also, with no mic on your speaker, you can also move it if you need to. For all I know, there are a thousand other products now that do the same thing, and possibly better, but, ah well....
    I used mine heavily for about ten years before it had any real problems, which was the power cutting in and out, which turned out to be dry joints, mostly around the transformer. Then I had to get the volume pot replaced. The buttons started playing up after about 6 or 7 years, but I still haven't got them replaced. One very minor cathc with them these is trying to find a midi footswitch.

      Back in 1995 when I got my JMP-1 and 8008 amp, in Jan' 1996 I added the Rolls MIDI Buddy pedalboard which works well, although does not have any attached volume or expression pedals. Very reliable preamp and setup as a whole, although I took it to a bass player friend's place and plugged my setup into his bass cab..... Seconds later dead Marshall 8008 power amp, which had blown the protection circuits and required repair under guarantee. The repair guy was asking questions to try work out how it could have failed like it had, and I was just acting all innocent lol. Despite all this and 26 years later, the same setup works like a champ and has done plenty of gigs, studio etc.

      @@EgoShredder That reminds me: I used an old Marshall 8004 Valvestate Poweramp for a while (the black one; one-rack-space) until it blew one night when I was unplugging it and the end of the speaker lead shorted on my steel speaker cover. It even started smoking! For something I thought would be a simple problem, it was a relatively expensive repair of well over 200 bucks.
      I initially kept the 8004 poweramp in my car as a spare, and didn't use it for several years. I can't remember why I tried it the first night (maybe at a rehearsal when I was too lazy to lug my 100w Marshall head), but I did, and it was much better than I thought, so I used it for many, many gigs. I thought I'd miss not have eq knobs on an amp, but I didn't. How interesting! Ha ha :-)

      hair metal freak Giando Def Leppard used this (both Phil and Viv) for years live with Palmer speaker simulator units. The signal from the Palmers went to front of house, and the signal they got from Randall power amps went to onstage cabinets. So, if you go back and watch some Def Leppard live videos from the early 90s to just around last year (they switched to Fractal), you’ll get a decent idea.

      As always with a preamp you need a good power amp to let it shine. I have the Mesa Simulclass 2:90 power amp and it sounds utterly stunning with the JMP-1. A lousy power amp will kill the JMP-1. Same with the Triaxis...it doesn't matter how good the pre is the power amp must be good also. Hope this helps.

    You cannot do much wrong with this preamp. As iconic as a JTM45 or 1959 for me.
    Add a cab IR behind and you do not even necessarily need a power amp. If I use one, I like it most with a pair of KT77's. Has someting unique, but hard to describe.

    Wish I had never sold my JMP-1 yrs ago. I missed it too much even though I own the Mighty Triaxis. I bought it again recently and nothing puts a smile on my face as the Marshall Crunch which the Triaxis cannot do.
    Btw I liked your approach to making this video so much I subbed. Great friendly video.

      Cheers for the Sub! A rack with a JMP-1 and Triaxis would just about do it all.

      Yes. I have the Simulclass 2:90 power amp also and are wondering if I can run both the Triaxis and JMP-1 with a single 2/12 cab. I am not yet familiar with my rig as I got it only recently for £1500 inc-High End 6U flight Case Aluminum and plywood, Furman PL Plus CE power conditioner with LED lit front and Back Triaxis Mesa 2:90 poweramp all in out of the box condition and free delivery. The Triaxis is V2 but I do not have the manuals for either. If you can let me know how to connect up two preamps to the 2:90 then that would be very helpful:))

    Can you do a video like the ADA 80’s tones, but with the JMP1? Thanks

    • @LeonTodd

      Sounds fun; you thinking Leppard/Maiden tones?

    • @Guitar6874
      @Guitar6874 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but maybe looking at Phil Collen’s tone, and maybe Leppard tones from Pyromania and High n Dry. Also like you did with the ADA maybe a Paul Gilbert type of tone. Dokken, Dio, Loudness........ect......Thanks

    Marcel Coenen had the best lead tone I've ever heard using this preamp. Checkout his song Moyra.

    • @LeonTodd
      @LeonTodd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll need to connect it to a power amp

    Hey, Great vid!.What did you mean at the start of the vid about the marshall head and jmp1 talking to each other and having the correct impedance? I have a jmp1 that i use with evh 5150 III lbx head and you have got me wondering if I am doing it right.I trust you are talking about going into the marshall heads return on the fx loop.I notice you have the Jmp-1 output level turned right up.Are you running it all into a cab and mic'd it up just out of curiosity?

    • @LeonTodd
      @LeonTodd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Into a head, cab and mic'd up. Basically I just made sure the Marshall fx loop was set to +4dB (same as the JMP-1 output) to avoid any unwanted clipping.
