Correction: I made a bad edit. Sturgis is NOT canceled. This video was recorded a month ago and I had meant to say it "might be canceled". It appears it is still on for Aug 7th start as of today July 28th. Enjoy the rally and be safe if you are going.

Briggs, love your stuff. We're new permanent South Dakota residents, but have summered in the Black Hills for the past four years. A couple things we learned things about town pronunciations around here that are kind of tricky. The first one is hearing the capital city pronounced on the radio as PEER. One would think it would a french sound, but it does not. The second is the flip side of that. Our new town of Belle Fourche is pronounced BELL FOOSH. I only mention this because you mentioned these two towns in two separate videos and mispronounced these towns. This isn't a criticism, because everyone messes them up. We love it here and the people are great. Keep up the great video content.

I enjoy living in SD, moved here about 12 years ago. To someone from a highly populated state, it might look like a bunch of boring farm land and tiny towns. But, once you get a little creative and look past our lack of amusement parks and other attractions, there’s plenty to do. Lots of places to hunt and fish, dirt track racing on the weekends, beautiful backroads to ride the motorcycle, snowmobiling in the winter, mom and pop restaurants, and one of my favorites; just driving around and exploring. If you can put up with some cold weather and snow, it’s a nice state to be in.

I was born in Brooklyn, raised in Queens, and went to HS in Napa, CA. I have lived in Vermillion, SD since 2001...got my MPA degree at U. of South Dakota, a decent regional university. I rent a 4BR house (not top of the line, but very decent) for $750/month. We have a four season climate: Blizzard, Flood, Tornado, and Road Construction. Housing near the university can be expensive and buying a home here is also pretty expensive, but you can find good deals. Social life is a disaster and the place is a cultural desert. You can live here for 20 years and unless you were born here, you will still be seen as an outsider...especially for dating. Crime rate is low, except for DUI and domestic stuff. On the positive side, you are only 62 miles from Sioux Falls and around 30 miles from Sioux City, IA. Medical care is good here and, for veterans, Sioux Falls has a VA Regional Medical Center. Vermillion is in Clay County, the only liberal county in the state. Our two Senators and one Congressman are RWNJs and our governor is a raving asshole. BTW, although he passed statutes for medical and recreational marijuana...they have to get through the state legislature, which is ruled by RWNJs who will do all they can to obstruct enactment of those laws. Abortions are not easy to get. Air pollution is relatively low. Finally, this is a "Right to Work (for minimum wage)" state and you can be fired without notice or cause. With very rare exception, unions are non-existent...and we pretty much invented the "old boy" network. IOW, wages are shit! Still, the place is very livable if you are retired. Clay County attracts a large number or disabled veterans, as your benefit check goes a long way here. I actually like the place, but your mileage may vary. LOL

Because of the low taxes in South Dakota, I decided a few weeks ago that I'm going to become a legal resident of the state. They make it an easy thing to accomplish because the more legal residents they have in the state the more government representation they have in Washington So they do everything in South Dakota that they can to bring in new residents and boost the state's population.

All that you have to do to be a South Dakota resident is register your car, have your mail forwarded to a mail forwarding service, and stay in the state one night every five years. There are places that offer one-stop service in this regard. You can take the more traditional way of renting or buying a house/apartment and living there. South Dakota has low car insurance rates, and people who travel full time like RVers take advantage of this.

The interesting metrics would be: cost of average hospital stay, average cost of General surgery, average cost for a visit to your General Medical Doctor, Average cost to Specialist Medial Doctor, Average cost of alternative healthcare, like chiropractic and acupuncture or other holistic care. Also metrics like, cost of group health insurance, how many people are on state or federal healthcare like Medicare or Medicaid would be very interesting. As someone who has lived in Yankton South Dakota (almost) my whole life, I could a few extra tidbits about it.1. we have a population of less than 20,000 so take that as you will 2. Yankton has pretty could infrastructure. We have a pretty decent (both in quality and size) hospital. The schools are very nice. yankton has 4 public and 1 (I think) private Christian elementary schools. For middle school, all of the public elementary schools consolidate into 1 huge middle school (it has 2 gymnasiums (1 normal size and one HUGE size), a pretty decent cafeteria, and nice resources like Chromebook carts as well as iPads). When it comes to sports, it has its own football field and track. Also the middle school science Olympiad team has gone to Nationals every single year for 30+ years (sorry other towns, just got to beat Yankton next time). I don't know much about the private middle school but heard it's pretty good too. Finally Yankton has one of the nicest highschool's in the state . I say that because it's big enough to get access to all the nice stuff like a pretty huge theater and the cabinetry stuff is amazing, while still being small enough to have all the perks of small schools, like 1 on 1 conversations with teachers. One final tidbit about the schools, it has two major partners. The first one is the summit center, so the swim team has access to an in school pool. It also gives the school access to multiple tennis ball courts. Second is Rtek. The highschool has access to essentially college level welding gear and material. So if you take the class (it does cost $10) you essentially get access to essentially unlimited material for a semester all while getting a CTE credit. The school also has it's own football field and track, and the science Olympiad team has one allmost every year like the middle school tho there are a few blemishes to the record. Ok, that's enough about the school (if you couldn't tell, the school is a huge strongsuit of the town). 3. Besides it's buildings, Yankton also has great outside areas. I rode my bike every summer and I guestimated that there is around 10 to 15 miles of bike/ walking trails all either directly connected or very close to each other. They are all lovely too with a variety of wild life as they are mostly along the stream that flows through Yankton. I've seen Muskrats, rabbits, fish of all sizes, and a plethora of birds of all shapes and colors ( my favorite are the king Fisher). Yankton also has numerous parks including the pretty big mamorial park with a perimitare of almost exactly 1 mile and river side park which as the name suggests, is right by the river. By the way, Yankton is right alone a river. It's great. The river has islands. It's weird being able to go to a island completely surrounded by water in the middle of the great plains. But beside the island, Yankton has the walking bridge that used to be the way people crossed the river. It's essentially what were known for. It's over half a mile long with an upper and lower deck. The view is beautiful on it. I'm now just noticing how long this is so to some it up, Yankton might not be the biggest place on Earth but in my opinion it's pretty nice ( mind you this is coming from a 16 year old who definitely has their own issues with it, but loves it either way). Ok final tidbit, Yankton had multiple manufacturing plants such as a mining machine manufacture and a truck trailer producer that all pay pretty well (one of them essentially can be a $20/hour job straight out of highschool if you take the right welding classes)

I can honestly say South Dakota is a great state. But I would NEVER live in 80% of the towns on this list. Yankton Mitchell and Huron are gang towns. Hurron is the cheapest because it’s the worst. Might as well live on a reservation. Watertown and Aberdeen are the 2 coldest and most boring towns in this state. Brookings is strictly a college party town. Sturgis is the home of the rally and sex trafficking and biker gangs. I did enjoy this video however recommending anyone live in any of these towns is a terrible thing to do. I would recommend pierre rapid fort Pierre highmore Faulkton Miller Garretson Phillip deadwood Nebraska. In that order.

Awesome SD coverage Mr. Briggs! Though born in Chicagoland, my dad was from Huron and mom from Watertown and they met at SDSU in Brookings (Nick's greasy burgers! White Castle has nothing on them 8^). Now in Eden Prairie, MN I've made some trips back to visit their grave site in Miller (nowheresville) and childhood homes as well as the campus and have thoroughly enjoyed the great "wide-open" and SD folks. I must say like up-state IL (not near rivers) it's as flat as a pancake east of the Missouri river which is kinda boring. As a kid it was torture; as an old fart, I daydream about the farms and what was the Native America habitat. Stayed in Pierre not long ago and headed south for a return trip and loved the rolling hills thru Hwy 1806 on the west side which is part of Lower Brule Res. Love taking the back roads and seeing the real America. Sorry for rambling, but just wanted to say great job on all topic coverage! I am more of good news guy though you say most folks want the bad info. Would love to see a video on great towns near state or county parks. Thanks for the great work informing us on an array of topics and giving me a chuckle on the all side comments. Aberdeen, SD has more than 21,000 in population- pre & post 2019; Population has been around 27-28,000 for over a decade.
Aberdeen, SD also made the top 10 for season three of Small Business Revolution. Job's are plentiful in manufacturing, with high pay and benefits.
The SD Film Festival is held here every September.
If you're a parent looking for disability and educational services for under 18, Aberdeen beats neighboring states. Over 18 services are available as well, I personally can't compare them to neighboring states, but they are wonderful from what I've seen in my lifetime.
The winter's can be long and cold, but many people choose to ignore when moving here, because the benefits outweigh the winter's.
There are many unique qualities to Aberdeen that weren't named, but kudos for mentioning our roller derby team!👍🏻💜

@@SuperMegaGaelourde Wow, barely any raises. I guess they consider if you have a job, you're lucky to have it, and the govt. stays out of mandating raises and salaries.

Ya, this was fun watching. I'm hoping for a whole series of this format on every state in the union. BTW, your pronounciation of Belle Fourche was almost perfect. Well done!
