    I was born and raised in Sioux Falls. I moved to the province of Ontario, Canada 15 years ago. Can't wait to move back to the U.S. now that we are officially retired. My adult children both live in Sioux Falls. When I am there, I always feel like I'm home. It will always be home to me. Always....... And most of that is because of the people. Just really great people.

    My experience living up north: having a 4x4, the best set of winter gear you can afford, and an outdoor activity you enjoy makes the winter something to look forward to. Skiing and snowboarding, snowshoeing, ice fishing, ice skating, etc. I live in Texas now because it's where I'm from and my family is here, but I reminisce about my time living in Wyoming, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

    I'm being honest here folks.
    I live in California and am truly miserable for a number of reasons. Mainly the people suck. It's a freak-show even in the rural area I'm in. I'm retired and because of the fires and loss of homes, housing is either non-existent or so outrageously priced that it's not affordable.
    After seeing the current governor of South Dakota speak at an engagement, I liked what she had to say and have been thinking a lot about making a move.
    It's been particularly bad here for me lately and when I went to bed last night, my final prayer was for direction. When I got up this morning, this video came up in a notification in my subscription box. I wasn't subscribed to this site but I am now.
    I'm thinking that my prayer might have been answered.

    Here's some things to look out for though.
    1. There's so much space, and if you want massive city life, you've come to the wrong place.
    2. Winters are brutal for anyone who isn't ready to have snow in April
    3. Everything is small town, Sioux Falls is the only place with a proper city population
    4. People are nice, but status quo is heavily ingrained in everyday life
    5. Towns get along, except For Tea and Lennox.

    Moved from California, San Francisco Bay Area, a year ago and will fight anyone who tries to change South Dakota. Everyone asks how we survived the winter. Our first snowstorm was October 18, 2020. We loved it and the entire winter and summer here is more comfortable than where we lived in CA. The entire state has fewer people than the county we lived in in CA. And, yes, there is no traffic here. It's absolutely perfect. Don't come here.

    Moved here in 2012 and haven't looked back. The winters can get cold, but if you live along the Missouri River it feels more like a Northern California winter. Live in Aberdeen, Milbank or Watertown it feels like the Artic Circle. But therre are days in December and January when it gets in the 40's and you can actually go sleeveless. As the video mentions, there is quite a bit of space between cities. However, with work and recreational areas nearby you never feel trapped. Keep in mind that the summers can be hot and humid.

    Thanks for your honest and vivid portrayal of our beautiful state. We returned to Sioux Falls from California after retirement, would never consider leaving here again. Few people realize that Sioux Falls is one of the most dynamic, entrepreneurial cities of any size in the country with opportunities in tech, finance, and health care as well as many blue collar occupations. Unlike smaller communities in the state, Sioux Falls is very diverse with great restaurants, world-class entertainment venues, professional sports teams, wonderful parks, and vibrant night life. The winters are small price to pay for the freedom and sense of community we still have in South Dakota.

    So happy you are doing a South Dakota video! Yay!!
    Edit: This was a very well done video! So informative. I learned a lot of things. Who knew SD could be so positive. You’re right, in terms of hospitality, it’s like a southern state that moved up north. But best part is, is has none of the negatives the southern states have because SD has such a great economy! Yet it’s still a low cost of living! I’m so excited to set up my domicile there in the next couple of weeks! Yay to no state taxes! 😁

    I think there may be a few things you overlooked. SD is a very easy state to set as your domicile. Basically that means you only have to stay there one day in a hotel every (5yrs?). That means the state recognizes you as a resident, you can get your drivers license changed, get a mailing address, file your IRS taxes saying you live in SD, etc.
    Many people who work physically location independent jobs in different parts of the country like CEOs, truck drivers, traveling nurses, traveling salesman, change their state residence but continue working in others. This is what might be screwing with your SD job employment perception.

    A lot of borders of states are defined by river systems. As the story goes, when Minnesota developed it’s state boundaries, it was considering its western side with the Dakota Territory at the time. It was considering the Big Sioux River as it ran north to south all the way to the Missouri River. Trouble was it was a surveyor’s nightmare. The Big Sioux has more wiggles, twist and turns then an ameba. So from Big Stone Lake up north the border runs in a straight line to Iowa. Just look at that western border of Iowa with South Dakota. It follows the Big Sioux al the way to Sioux City. In fact, if it had been following the big Sioux, half of Sioux Falls would be in Minnesota today.

    Briggs, as a veteran of over 24 years of driving truck, allow me to point out something that ALL of you fail to take into consideration. Truck drivers make good money because they are REQUIRED to work (drive) SEVENTY HOURS A WEEK. Driving IS NOT a forty hour a week job, Briggs. Truck Driving is comparable to getting thirty-two thousand a year for a forty hour week. Over-the-Road driving will have you home two to three days each month. They TRY to "get you home" two days every two weeks, but that's not guaranteed. So, all the "things to do" in these various States DO NOT -- in reality -- apply to Truck Drivers.

    • @timothykeith1367
      @timothykeith1367 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Some trucking jobs have more home time than others, but as a company driver - not so much better. I admire the owner operator independent drivers, but they have to know the business extremely well. I have considered "retiring" to part time truck driving, share a route with another part time driver - one week out, one week home - they promise. Or maybe 10 days out, but the same shared route with another part time driver.

    • @anthonyhargis6855
      @anthonyhargis6855 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@timothykeith1367 They always promise. And the jobs you speak of pay by the hour, not the mile, and are located in areas with large metropolitan centers. There are none of those in South Dakota; metropolitan areas, that is. And Briggs specifically mentioned 'driving jobs' for South Dakota. for south Dakota, forget about all of the "attractions." a driving job based in South Dakota isn't going to leave you any time for that activity.
      In addition, the activity you refer to is known as "Slip Seating." (If you're going to drive, you should know that term) And slip seating has its own particular problems. You will discover them all. Mwahahahahahahahahaha!
      LOL Having said that, good luck with it. For young men, it is an outstanding profession. You are literally paid to cruise and listen to music. Everyday, not just on Friday nights. ;-)
      And you do get to travel the country. To this day, I have no need of any map . . . to go anywhere. I know how to get there. I even remember where all of my favorite truck stops are located. Good luck, Timothy, and enjoy!

    • @timothykeith1367
      @timothykeith1367 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@anthonyhargis6855 I'm in IT now, but I am familiar with the trucking industry. The recruiters make promises - maybe a few of them have actually been a driver, most have the best intentions. The companies speak of the optimal scenarios - some company drivers actually earn what they claim in the "up to" promises. They'll mention "running hard" - which means if everything works out ideally and you have the stamina and the trip planning to get the maximum miles and avoid road construction and other delays. Many of them want team drivers. I heard of one company that is doing a trial of three drivers in a team. Some of the trucks are very well maintained, others break down too much. Turnover is high for young drivers, they want a social life and better pay.

    • @anthonyhargis6855
      @anthonyhargis6855 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@timothykeith1367 The hours you can drive are set in Federal law. No getting around that. As for team driving, it depends on whether or not YOU can sleep while the truck is moving over rough roads. (I was literally thrown out of the bunk several times by bumps in the road) The "Hours of Service" law is why companies want teams AND why some are experimenting with triple teams. A friend of mine, and I, tried it. Neither of us could sleep while the truck was moving over "suck ass" roads, of which there are MILLIONS of miles.
      As for Recruiters and Dispatchers: Remember just last week, when your Supervisor promised you (blank) and the Owner chimed in and said "screw that shit?" Well, TECHNICALLY Recruiters and Dispatchers ARE a "step above" drivers in the hierarchy, but they still don't actually "call the shots." So take their promises with a grain of salt.
      My friend and I "teamed" for exactly one month, then . . . never again. I was an Owner/Operator for two years, BARELY made more money then I did as a company driver PLUS had a bunch of headaches that company drivers don't have. The only really benefit was that I COULD -- theoretically -- reject any loads I didn't want. BUT, companies DO have ways of getting revenge for that. So . . .
      Let me know what you decide!

    • @timothykeith1367
      @timothykeith1367 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@anthonyhargis6855 I am convinced that the ideal trucking jobs are largely luck. There are so many scenarios that drivers can't control. I hear about companies that are "family oriented" and care about drivers, where the drivers earn $80K or more, and I hear of other company drivers working for the same huge trucking company that say the opposite. The situations are all different, but lots of drivers just quit rather than keep looking for the better situation. And now that Covid-19 lockdowns are ending, there are plenty of jobs near home. I've heard drivers say that South Dakota is their favorite state to work in, the big cities have the loads but the traffic delays can be horrendous. California enforces pernicious regulations and the northeast has so much traffic congestion. I'd thought maybe I'd want to drive a tanker - I mostly see tankers late at night when the traffic is generally calm - but that's also when many highways get shutdown for maintenance.

    I must say that I love SD as there are so many wonderful aspects for this. Years ago Sioux Falls was ranked in top 3 places to live and it absolutely ruined this state as people packed up expecting to make a high wage and low rent. That didn't actually happen as people discovered they had to work 2-3 jobs to support the high rent so then they turned to crime & drugs. It ruined our state and doing videos like this will only make it worse as I know people are moving here from CA & WA. Housing & rent is so high now & business are literally closing due to the fact that no one wants to work or get paid a low wage. So please rethink the move, research heavily & don't expect it to be a cake walk if you do move. As other comments state, we love it here & want to keep the integrity & peacefulness of this state. This is a comment about North Dakota....so, it's off topic. Bear with me and, "stop typing": Many years ago, in the late 1980's, North Dakota was talking about changing the name of their state. 'North Dakota' apparently came across as too cold/remote (which, of course, it is). The newspaper in Billings, MT decided to have a contest, where you could submit potential new names for the state. I don't remember any except for my favorite: Barren Rectangle.
