It may be the latest Toronto rappers that don't sound good. I'm old, so I remember the days of Maestro Fresh Wes, Kardinal Offishall, Choclair, Ghetto Concept, and Dream Warriors. Toronto hip hop in the late 80s to the 2000s was more creative and sounded great. Even some US rappers talked about our music scene. The only new GTA rapper I listen to is Haviah Mighty (I know she's from Brampton). It could be these latest rappers are trying too hard.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I remember the days of Ghetto Concept and them - we certainly had more respect from Americans back then, and I think it was because it was authentic and showed a Canadian identity, whereas now, these guys imitate Americans and fail at it. Haviah Mighty has my respect, as well as Northside Benji and Houdini (RIP).

Canada doesn’t put money into anything if it’s not hockey you have to go through a million loop holes just to get noticed out here. I remember back around 2016ish (I can't remember the exact date) but when 365 galore dropped. I was hoping for Jayy Brown to actually continue his grind. He took a break n lost all the attention. One of his newest songs "lost in translation" is a rlly good song. But since he lost that attention he got w 365 galore, it hasn't got that many views. That song isn't block music at all, he has a good voice, decent lyrics, and the song itself has a nice beat. To me whenever someone in Toronto who doesn't make block, they will take a break and lose that attention that they and then just fade out of the spot light.

Each city got its own sound and eventually the city gets the spotlight and then all of a sudden the next city gets the spotlight and now rappers start copying there sound and it don’t sound right at all . Everyone copying ny drill right now it’s a fked up sound too . I even heard Toronto rappers goin over Detroit beats it don’t sound right but your right Toronto was best when it was doin it’s own sound. That’s why the city got the spotlight cuz it was original .

I would say, it’s the sound! I have many TO artists i listen to even just ones coming up. Problem I hear is that people try to bite each other’s sound, so the beat, autotune and melody sounds copied with some of the artists. But TO has lots of good artists, I would say from experience, Canadians often don’t support locally as much unless you crack streamline somehow! It’s supposed to be the other way around, support the mans as they are hustling, putting in work.

Toronto used to have a sound but it has been forsaken for whats trendy. These artists now rather be martyrs then actual artists and are liabilities. No promoter in their right mind can put on a showcase without the fear of losing their reputation over folks who bring the streets into the music.
There were many guys back in the day who were involved in the streets but you would never tell because the way they presented the music. There was skill and a passion for the artform. Theres too many rappers and not enough emcees. Our city hasnt grown artistically given the exposure it has now with social media and streaming. Its gotten worse generally. You just have to look for what you like and that means sifting through a whole bunch of garbage to get it
