Marie is the cause of all this, all she does is like seeing Robert sad, depressed & mopy because she has always had a resentment towards Robert because he was born illegitimately. In my opinion, Robert would be a better husband towards Debra than Ray. Ray just takes Debra for granted & Robert would appreciate her more.
I always thought Marie's resentment was because she wanted Robert to give her four more grandchildren.

Robert has been attracted to Debra since he first met her. We see it in the flashback episode of when Ray and Debra met. It’s was much to Robert’s disappointment that Ray met her first.

I think the writers on this show were some of the best in the business. Ever. For a comedy. I cant even count how many times I had genuine, uncontrollable laughter's and chuckles from watching this show. There is only one show which I wont mention here. But thats it. Everywhere else its mostly luagh tracks that will get the audience going. Not this show. Audience is there with you, not there to push you.

Sadly.. this is always how it goes. It is always the "Roberts" that "need to be fixed.. .yet Amy (initially), Stefania, and Marie NEVER saw any faults on their side. The entire reason Amy started being better to Robert was because she realized Debra was right about Marie. The moment she "didn't try to be like Marie" was when they clicked. Robert's statement, as he says, is about "finding that right person". Men don't want to "marry their mothers".. but too many women want to either "marry the Daddy that always spoiled her like a princess".. or because he didn't they want to "take revenge" because of their "Daddy issues".
And I know all the hate I will get for how I said that.. but let''s get real. Women always claim "I settled", when the truth is.. .most of the time, it is men who settle.. because the "perfect" women treat most men like crap.. but fall for "Chad" and become a "baby mama" in his harem.

With Amy, he kind of strung her along even though he knew she wanted a more serious relationship. With Stefania, Debra is right, he was looking for flaws.
