Why is everyone taking this seriously. Its comedy its made to laugh about whats normally a relatable situation. Just laugh and don’t overthink the show. Its a comedy

I think it's funny they portray Robert as penniless, but Ray as this great earner. There is zero chance a columnist for Newsday makes more money than an NYC Police Sergeant.
Yeah but he's divorced, lost the house he had, likely lost a lot of money to her too and may be paying alimony especially around those times
And Robert lives with his parents, rent and food free. He has no kids to support. So technically he's loaded. 😂
@KK-tr8tf This very reel shows Robert’s apartment, which he had during at least part of the series’ run. But seems like he did live with Marie & Frank early on and visited them a lot during his apartment days, thus was how he could pop over to Ray & Debra’s so often.
Roberts Ex wife would have taken half his pension and all that stuff plus any legal fees for a lawyer for him and he'd be forced to pay for the ex wife's lawyer plus whatever else, I can see him being broke at least for a while.
I believe Robert would be better husband to Debra than Ray because Ray takes Debra for granted. Ray’s problem is that he wants Debra to take care of him the same way his mother does.
Robert does love Debra, but I think just because her have to deal with Ray. He knows how Ray can be, so he is on her side by default.
It's also a jealousy thing as well

I think they also get along well because both characters are well read, intellectual and fun whereas Ray, as much as I like his character when he's not being an ass, is wrapped up in himself.

Robert was always infatuated with Debra right from the start. His neverending jealousy toward Ray, who pretty much took Debra for granted after they got married, only fueled his infatuation for her even more.
Fans found Robert's attraction toward Debra creepy, and at times it was. But now as fans look back on this show and see just how despicable Ray was, especially as a husband and father, they wish Debra ended up with Robert instead of Ray.

Robert and Debra get along because they're both very emotional people and they understand each other's feelings.
I always believe that Robert loves Debra. Not as an in-law, not as a woman but as another human being who he can relate to. He understands what she's going through with Marie and Ray. That's why he's always on her side. And, same goes with Debra. They have that understanding and connection but not a romantic one.

I agree, Robert would have been a much better choice for Debra. The show still could have revolved around Raymond but honestly the way Ray treated Debra, the kids, and his family in general. It was hard for me to watch some episodes because Ray was so whiny and annoying and treated everyone like they were beneath him. Robert and Debra had way more chemistry and he treated the kids like they were his own. The show did Robert a bit of injustice in a way because of how badly his character was treated. Could never keep a relationship, his parents treated him badly, his brother constantly made fun of him. I mean dang, he wasn’t even truly happy until he got engaged to Amy in season 7.
