FINDING OUT WHY MY LT4-SWAPPED '67 CHEVY C10 BROKE AND HOW I'M GETTING IT READY TO RACE FREIBURGER.

  • Episode 238 of Mike Finnegan's Garage takes us back into the basement as I fix several things on my Chevy C10 to get it ready for an upcoming Roadkill episode. First off, during a pretty rowdy burnout session, I destroyed the clutch so that needs replacing. The question is why? We'll answer it with help from Geoff Gerko from Mantic Clutch USA. Mantic clutches are assembled right here in America and my new clutch still has twin discs and ceremetallic material, but this time we went with solid hubs instead of sprung hubs. And also, we are re-using my old flywheel because we didnt have the correct eight-bolt flyhweel for my LT4.
Want more information about Mantic Clutch USA? Go here: manticclutchus...
We are also going inspect the inside of the 6xd billet sequential gearbox. Mainly, we are doing this because I wanted to replace Sixth Gear with something that offers a lower cruising speed (numerically lower, but a higher gear ratio) for highway driving. Rick Lamber from RTS/6XD had the gearbox disassembled, re-geared, and put back together in about an hour. Want more information on this awesome transmission? Go here: 6xdgearbox.com
Thanks for watching! If you'd like to support this channel you can do that by purchasing my clothing at www.fsmgarage.com

That's the kind of guy you like to have for a co-worker. I had an older dude like him teaching me how to make hydraulic lines for our rock crushing plants. He was awesome. You'd hear him coming from the break room "and for my next magic trick....!" Lol. Buddy showed him a pic of his new gf and he said "wooooah check out that chunka stuff!". Just random funny shit all the time, actually made me look forward to working with him every day, learned soooo much in such a short period of time too from him.

Even setting that all up right, I'm sure you guys double checked the pedal free play. I've seen a few times with this exact failure that was all due to adjustment at the pedal. After driving for a while the slave would randomly just keep getting tighter and tighter. I finally clued in one time when I was not able to push the slave in, the master was in a position where it would not allow the fluid to bypass. Just sharing.

I have seen some slight smears on total stock clutches, right before the upgraded clutch is installed.
Now that Mantic clutch material likely had experience similar to a war crime!
Well, on the upsides, Finn now knows how much abuse the clutch can grasp before failure.
We also see some fantastic machining and overall quality from this Mantic clutch and the full Wisconsin "Oh yah, thats your problem" that had me rolling laughing!
Especjally since I catch some mocking down in Florida for my Raag Baaag, and my elongaaaated A-'s, eh? Eh-and-a-hey?
Lol that poor widdle clutch, was trying to just get a grip and lost the battle and the war.
    😂
Smeared friction material is some proper drivetrain abuse, well, not abuse but definitely use far above that old clutches usage rate.
Finnegan, you are only second to Tony for the mechanical horrors you both can achieve.

This reminds me of when I blew the clutch springs up in my truck, replaced the clutch, needed to use my station wagon my fiancé was driving at the time so I let her drive my truck to work while I drove the wagon. She drove my truck to Chic-fil-a, and then to work, 14 miles on my new clutch, I got what I needed with the wagon and went to swap out the vehicles. I couldn’t pull my truck out of the relatively flat driveway of her work without getting a running go. She absolutely burned the clutch up in 14 miles and I’m talking, about grinded the rivet heads off, just toast. my old clutch I removed from the truck had 200k miles on it, and still gripped good, just don’t work good when you shatter every spring in it popping the clutch to get a little burnout going in 3rd while already moving and apparently having more traction then I thought lol but all I could do was laugh cause I blew my clutch up a day before my fiancé would have just toasted it if I hadn’t blew my clutch up the night before lol
Edit: also like the sight of them using a grinder on the fly wheel, I had mine finished on my first clutch change, on the next time I used the grinder and then some 360 grit sand paper on my glass stove top to level it 😂

I went to O’Reilly Auto Parts and they have one on hand for my truck for $163.

Great Video!! So much details and technical knowledge! I’m fighting just to fix 4l80e to Dana 300 leaks on LS Swapped Scrambler. Swing on bye if you got time 😂

I know you’re a very popular person Mike, but for these guys from two different companies to show up and have a great attitude is pretty impressive. Shows these guys both care about their customers and their products… Awesome folks right here! 👍🤘👏

If you put some valve lapping compound in hex bolts you're a lot less likely to round them if they're torqued heavily.

Much as I love the muscle truck, Finn needs to kick it's ASS!!! This truck takes what I've wanted since I was a kid, and goes so far past it!
