    Sometimes miniature painters complain about painting specific colors. Often times, those colors are things like yellow, or white. I believe that white and black are among the most difficult colors to paint, but at the core of it, understanding how to paint them is summed up in one topic that we explore in this video.

    I just finished painting a Black Legion marine. My trick for painting all that black armor? Painted it a really dark metallic (Vallejo Magnesium) then heavy washed it with black oil paint.
    For the highlights I cleaned the oil off with a Q-tip. Worked out amazingly, reads as black metal & looks kinda Grim Dark.

    I think you've got the right approach with thte theory but the "value distribution" - or maybe value concentration (?) needs to be even more extreme. Your set of squares on the right still reads as pink to me, so I would concentrate those shade colours even more, or even finish with a lighter value.
    Practically - I actually think you did white very well in your 'eavy metal marines SoB!

    Vince Venturella talked about something similar in one of Hobby Cheating videos about painting black armor; the conclusion was that for something to look black, at least 60% of the surface has to be black meaning that you have a fairly small area for all your other highlights, which pretty much sounds like what you were saying. I would imagine that for white, and possibly other colors, that number or close to it is the "Goldilocks zone" you want to aim for; the larger the surface area covered by whatever color you want it to be, the more our eyes will perceive it as that color.

    I think a lot of these problems are inherent with all types of painting. Mini painters that want to up their game need to start shifting their mindset from being a miniature hobbyist to being an artist. If you can, be sure to read up on any classic forms of painting, be it anatomy or architecture, or anything in between. I read an article on MASSIVEVOODOO that completely rewired my brain because of a book recommendation: "Color & Light - A Guide For The Realist Painter" by James Gurney. If you're not familiar with him, he's also the author of "Dinotopia", and a very educated and philosophical artist. It's a long read, but like most artbooks it serves better as a tool to return to when you're struggling with an area or a topic in your art.

    an effect i found works for me is basecoating (chaplain) skulls or maybe ghostly cloaks in black, and then giving it a very diluted glaze with white, pretty much only once or maybe twice... gives me a kinda smoked glass effect if i get it right, which is nice as it's own thing, and also gives a more interesting sublayer for contrast/speedpaints/washes than zenithal or just dry brushing, if i wanna go that route

    Most currently available white paints use Titanium White pigment. And most light colors use Ti White to get that lightness. In part this is because the tinting strength of Ti White is very, very high, and in part it's because Ti White is very opaque, so it doesn't take much to become very optically thick (opaque). So getting intermediate tones is hard.
    Try Zinc White, which has much lower tinting strength and opacity. It can be easier to get fine tonal gradations when mixing in Zn White for lightening paint.

    I recall that Vince Venturella (Vinnie V., pls don't hate me Vince) made a video about painting black some time ago.
    On another note: I know we can paint yellow mini (using airbrush) basecoating it pink, then zenithal bone color, next top highlighting white, finally glazing everything yellow. Can we do this with other colors? Like for example going for ligth green instead of pink, following other steps, and at the end glazing red? Would it work to turn green "brown-red-ish"? Something to test (I might be too lazy to do it :/ )

  • @tristanelwell5964
    @tristanelwell5964 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Scott, traditional painter here: value proportion is important, but the reason an area might be reading as a light tint of a color, rather than white, is because your darker values are too saturated. If your halftones and shadows are an identifiable hue, that's the color an object is going to read as, no matter how light you get. The darker areas on a white object are always going to be relatively low in chroma (discounting the effects of colored light sources, which are a whole other level of complication). So, the darker values for white can be a warm gray, a cool gray, a purplish gray, a greenish gray, etc, but the "gray" aspect is always going to be stronger than the "color" aspect.

    • @tristanelwell5964
      @tristanelwell5964 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, if there is an appreciable color cast to your shadows (or lights!) on a white object, then ALL your shadows will have some of the same color cast, because that color is coming from the ambient light in the surroundings.

    Great video (as always) I was thinking about what you were saying about the 'chalkiness' of light colours particularly white. I think you're right that it does have to do with not getting full opacity and therefore needing more layers. But do you also think its due to a combination of this and that the lightest colours (particularly whites) need compounds which tend to produce larger particle sizes in the paint. Assuming we load a brush with a similar mass of paint for any colour, the number of particles for white (compared with a dark colour, say black) will be fewer because each particle is larger. Thinning too much really cuts down the number of particles and so if we apply this too thinly to a surface and we will start to see the discrete particles rather than the continuum of smaller particles which makes up darker colours. We read that as 'chalky'. Not sure there is much of a way round it other than many many layers. On a giant scale its kind of like getting a big brush and painting a surface with watery sand compared to fine silty mud (something of course we do all the time?!), the silty mud would more likely cover the surface than the sand. Probably getting too nerdy now, but did that make any sense?

    I think a very, VERY, transparent white wash might be the final key to painting white. The white wash would leave white consistently over all of the white areas while keeping the shading.

    I think its more a problem of attempting to get a white skin tone with presumed blood flow(red base) it will always look pink.Since as you mentioned white is more translucent even full coverage is not really 100% there will always be some of the red leaking through and our eyes sort of average it out especially when then surrounded by red. Look at albino animals skin, very pink/red BUT if they have fur that is pure white but since fur/hair is dead it is under layed with a grey. I think your "value distribution" theory is definitely correct in where to place values though which is why the black shorts were so successful! These types of videos are great though they remind me of Alton Browns good eats! :D

    I heard it from other youtubers as the 60% rule: to paint black at least the 60% of the final area has to be black to allow a correct read for the eye. Sane goes for white, and indirectly for all the ither colors

    One way of providing more of a deathly look would be to wash with a blue tone and allow it to accumulate in the lower parts of the face; in the eyes, on the earlobes, and on the lower part of the cheek around the Buccinator(instead of rosy cheeks being toned on the upper cheek - on the zygomatic). Reason being is that in later stages of death, the blood begins to pool, so gravity would pool the blood of the face in lower/deeper regions. Also, the fingertips and lips.
    For some really flavorful undead - you could have story involving their deaths to be that of a witch trial, a ritualistic burning, or a house-fire: Any smoke-related death would have the victim potentially die from Carbon Monoxide poisoning - which would turn a victim's blood a vibrant pinkish-red; so the skin would be quite pink while the lips are ruby red.
    I could see that as a very interesting backstory for some Grimm Cinderella type; maybe after Cinderella is wed to the Prince - people of the realm find out about her Fairy Godmother's magic spells that were cast upon her: they accuse her of consorting with demons and demand her execution for Witchcraft, which the Prince is forced to obligue by due to the obviously odd circumstances of their meeting. Perhaps an undead bride with a burnt/charred wedding gown and her hair done up with a broken tiara in the likeness of the Disney Princess - coupled with the Prince Charming having blue tones and speckles of red "goosebumps", as is seen in drown victims; because he threw himself off the bridge in grief of his wife's execution. He could have a "Davy Jones" vibe; having various aquatic things growing on him.
    Husband and Wife - Water and Fire; seems to have quite the little ring to it.

    What I've found works best for White and Black is to stylize the color palette for black and white since truly black and truly white surfaces in RL do lack the visual contrast and detail of more colorful surfaces. This is how I do them;
    1) Use de-saturated blues for your mid-tones unless you have a specific light source in mind. Blue is easily read as gray reflecting natural light so no matter how light or dark it is it will almost always be read as 'light' when de-saturated and juxtaposed against black or white.
    2) Eliminate the necessary number of outlier values and allow the black/white to take over for the midtone and every value thereafter. So for white you eliminate the shadow and darkest midtone and allow your lighter values to take over as your shadow. For black it's the same just in reverse where you're eliminating the highlight and lighter midtones to allow the darker midtones to become your highlights and allowing the black to take over from the darker midtones all the way down to the shadows.
    Doing it this way subdues the lighting and avoids the harsh lighting effect you were getting from your value distribution method that lead to her reading the skin as pink. It'll also help keep black things from looking shiny by subduing the contrast and detail to allow for some of it to be swallowed up in the midtone as often happens with RL black surfaces.

    Wait, is that wight watered down or is the brush not very loaded with it? Also how much time do I need to wait between layers ?
