    Wow! Just what I needed to fix the text block of my dad's Bible. Now onto your paring leather video for the cover. Thanks so much for the time you spend on these!

    Hi there, thank you for the video! I have some clarifications if you don't mind. can I check how you've threaded the thread through the grooves? did you snake two threads all the way through each groove? or did you use separate short threads through each. It looks looped at several parts but I can't really tell.

    When you say "Japanese Paper", please explain. And where do you get this?

    Would it be a good idea, not making the saw cuts horizontal to the book, but diagonally?
    Wouldn't the cut edges had more adhesive suface that way because of the diagonall cut or is this adhevise area to small with paper and it makes no difference?

    What is the name of the lining that goes paste down to the cover on the inside?

    GREAT simple explanatory video Alex. I loved and appreciated your father Art when he was alive. I miss him, and by the way, you sound like your father. What is your price for rebinding a bible in black genuine cowhide? Is your company in Kentucky or Indiana?

      Hey Mike! Since moving from Alabama to Tennessee in December of 2014 and working on only one Bible during 2015, I have accepted no new work. My binding operations are presently shut down. My new schedule just does not allow time for such work. Perhaps in the future I will be able to return to my hobby.

    A. How did you remove the glue?
    B. Can any thread be used as long as it has good linear strength?

    • @AlexOgden
      @AlexOgden  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Kyle! On the question of how you remove the old glue from a book spine, we use paste! That's right, we use wheat paste to soften the PVA or other glue that is on the spine. Just put a generous amount of paste on the glued spine and let it sit for 15 minutes or so. Then see if it can be gently removed with the point of a bone folder. Trial and error and you'll figure it out. Linen thread has traditionally been used in bookbinding. It's very strong and is a natural material that reacts well to the various materials of the book. But yes others thin threads could also work.

    so you don't actually sew it? You just make the "divet" and glue the thread in there?

    • @AlexOgden
      @AlexOgden  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      When working on a "perfect binding" traditional sewing methods cannot be used. The video illustrates how to handle such a situation.

    perfect binding is the worst binding technique!

    • @AlexOgden
      @AlexOgden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct! Thankfully there are ways to make them much better, though it will never be as good as sewn signatures.
