How to fish RIPRAP! 💪 // Project E // My tips on how to fish around man-made placed rocks

  • In this video, I wanted to talk about one of the best structures to fish on year-round.....RipRap!
On this topic, there’s a few common questions:
+ How to fish around riprap
+ How to fish around rocks
+ How to fish around bridges
+ How to fish around a dam
Some of my teaching points in this video:
    0:25
The Definition of RipRap: Man-made placed rock to prevent erosion
    2:00
Isolated/elevated rocks are a great ambush point for a bass
    3:08
    Change your speed
    3:50
Bass are moving up and down the riprap all the time - They’re not on one spot
    4:52
There’s always going to be a direction that’s better than the other (It has to do with current)
    5:11
They’re going to be facing up-current
    6:21
As the day changes, the fish will change depth
    7:27
Water color will dictate what baits you should use
    8:21
With the spinner bait, the angle is very critical
    10:45
    Change your retrieve
    12:23
    Indentation:
A spot where bass can get out of the current
    12:40
Where the rocks END is just like a highway to a bass
In this video, I hope to give you some pointers on how to catch 'em better all around RipRap!

I have watched a lot of teaching videos on bass fishing but the depth that you go into starting with the electronics then lures and retrieve, water clarity and presentation it is the most complete I have seen. You are really good at this. Thank you!

The guys that are able to find the differences in the rocks, such as transitions, current breaks, holes, and indentations, are the ones who are gonna catch them. Great job breaking it down for us E.

Thx it was a good video. I also.like how u made in the details page points u talked about like chapters of a book at the listed times.

I really liked the tip about water clarity and lure color selections. One thing you may have mentioned, but possibly I missed, is what kind of line you usually use for your cranking and spinnerbaits? I usually use fluorocarbon fishing line because it has low stretch and it is super sensitive. Many times I will actually fish my crankbaits and spinnerbaits by simply dragging my rod tip in a slow sweeping motion so that I have an even better sensation of what those baits are hitting down there along the bottom of the rip rap. Great video!!!

Moving from Arizona to New Mexico for my retirement, our lakes' main structure is rip rap. Once I accepted that, I have caught more fish. I'm still always looking for more tips. Our lakes constantly fluctuate, and I always see holding crevices for fish, for when water rises. Pointing them out to other fishermen, they don't seem to understand. You gotta think like a fish, sometimes. (-:

Good stuff. Been Fishing the Rip Rap of Lake Texoma(Dam). Interesting as they continue to draw down lake (2.5’up ) the bite varies varies from day to day. One day cranks worked the next finesse baits were used to get bites(calmer 2nd day as well- water dropped 6”)
Think your point on targets(maybe a little more bush in the water along bank) and bait activity(wind) made the difference.
Guess if it gets slow throw left and catch Striper.

when i see the fish moving by the rip rap at the lower here they are always going clockwise. very rarely counter clockwise.. thoug here it seems to be more specific timing.. like if the crawdads spawned and are all up in it.. or post spawn when all the tiny fresh spawns and fingerlings like to hang out in them.. on the banks.. what would you recommend near the rip rap just wondering.. i usually do weightless texas rigged. i think from boat you can take more advantage of it with more baits. how can they spawn and make a bed in the rip rap.. lol. the bottom edge? where its dirt but on the rocks.. i never seen that. my lake is different though.l. its hard for me to even see beds here and its super clear water. usually they make beds deep.. the upper here is a pain also because in the spawn it lowers they start to make beds then the water raises 20-25 foot because we are at bottom of aqueduct.. but the lower has rip rap too and stays a little more steady with water height but ya its high pressured here so maybe the bass just smarter and make beds deeper where they know fisherman cant see em.. i do get hogs near rip rap post spawn though.. and usually its consistent every year one near there post spawn..
