Nicktoons was what got me head-over-heels for this show, if they hadn't censored it, my parents probably wouldn't have let me watch it. They didn't even want me watching Power Rangers. It feels silly seeing the changes as an adult, but if it weren't for them, I probably wouldn't have fallen in love with the show.
No, the Nicktoons Z Kai dub at least had death be a thing. They just smartly edited and changed some dialogue around it for the sake of the kids watching, but it was still very much there. And it certainly didn’t pretend that people who died were sent to “the next dimension”. LMAO Or that very obvious ships were cargo robots, or that people who were very obviously killed were using parachutes.
They should not have went all in and they should not keep the 9,000 light in the uncut version because it being iconic does not mean that it should stay
Here’s how it could work: The reason 9,000 is inaccurate is because it changes the powerscaling. At just over 8,000, Goku would be at just over 16,000 in Kaio-Ken Times Two, meaning he’d need Times Three to actually beat Vegeta, who’s at 18,000. Changing Goku’s power level to over 9,000 means Times Two would be more powerful than Vegeta. Just change Vegeta’s power level to 20,000 if you’re going to keep 9,000. Then, in the Namek arc, change Cui/Kewie’s power level to 20,000 as well to keep the thing about them being equal in powers.
Wdym with going all-in. Keeping 9000 would be a definitional example of compromise and half measures. Returning the line to over 8000 was the all-in choice here
Epic video! I think this is also when they stopped refrencing death all together in the edited dub; when they land on Namek they stop saying words like "kill" or "die".
5:46 I recently discovered that the dialouge from the Nicktoons/edited version is actually identical to the dialouge from the Funi DBZ dub! Not to plug myself, but I have a video on my channel comparing all three.
08:18 I love how even in the uncut Krillin says "damn it", then follows it up with "what the heck"! Gotta wonder if FUNi was trolling or just plain sloppy...
I honestly don't think it was either. People irl just say "heck" and "dang" sometimes; I always assumed Funi wrote lines that way to reflect that. Plus, Krillin just seems like the type of person to swear and then not swear right after, lol.
This is why I rather watch the Japanese or uncut versions. DB doesn't feel the same without the swearing, blood, violence and death. When I rewatch time and time again I don't want to miss anything.
The 8000 vs 9000 thing was actually clever. Let’s face it Chris Sabats over 9000 in the z version was nowhere near as good as Brain Drummads take. They wanted to make a more acurate dub but used the fact that their world be another version to do both an accurate version of the over 8000 which is what was originally said and a version that had the iconic over 9000 line done like how Brian Drummad did it. It’s a smart move in the long run
Nicktoons Kai holds a special place in my heart. Honestly a lot of the dialogue changes I actually kinda prefer, maybe it's just nostalgia. The usage of "bastard" and "damn" seems a bit overdone in the uncut imo. The massive removal of scenes here and there is something my memory struggles to remember.
Watching this over again reminds me of just how cruel and somewhat unredeemable Vegeta is. Shoot, he spent a good 30-40 years of his life killing, pillaging, and taking great glee in those who he has hurt. Even when he seemed to move on from that version of himself, he relapsed and had one of THE most heinous of rampages in the whole series committed by a non-deity! He's shown great improvement in the past 10 years but unlike Piccolo or any other former antagonist, he will ALWAYS be a liability due to his potential for destruction on Earth...
I see where you're coming from and I understand why you may not like this edit of Kai, but be aware of the fact that even the original anime cut down the violence for stuff like the destroyed Cell Jrs. and the beat down on Videl being slightly less graphic than the manga. Censorship is everywhere so you really just have to pick your poison.
I don't think the CW4kids version has that much more censorship than the Nicktoons version since that's the dub they got instead of the Uncut version. If he didn't cover it here, it's most likely they didn't mess with it. Second theory is he's probably waiting to make it, it's own video considering the source.
Dragon Ball has absolutely no business being on Nicktoons.Should’ve just stayed on Toonami and kept it raw uncut and uncensored just how it was back in the 90’s and 00’s.
18:45 Probably wasn't their intention, but I think this is the only time an English dub had any character refer to Goku as "Son", like some do in the Japanese version.
If you guys don't mind me asking ahead of time your opinions as a fellow otaku & as a fellow weeb myself & as a fellow person of culture myself. What always wrong with power rangers ??
cutting the punches and kicks from a fighting anime goes crazy ngl
In the flashbacks of episode 10, the flashback of Tien having his arm punched off by Nappa, was not censored
Nicktoons had ocean dub levels of censorship 💀
CW4kids/Toonzai took it a new level.

I don't understand the concept of censoring punches, kicks, and words that reference death in a show that's revolved around fighting and killing.
