I have my Tele in my hands while watching TV, volume off, just plunking strings. If the show gets boring, the volume knob goes to 10. Whole Tone Scale is becoming easier by doing this. Playing that sucker back and forth repetitively is beginning to show benefits. Never thought I'd get that one down.

I think this is great once you've already learned the basics of all the major areas. But if there's things you haven't done yet, it's better to get a basic working ability over a couple of weeks. For example, I never bothered learning triads. Rather than begin learning it for 15 mins every few days it's better to get decent at it first by making triads my primary area of practice for a while. Once I've gained some knowledge and ability, then I can build on it for 15 mins a couple times a week.

On the note of chord inversions and little wing in particular, that song is almost perfect to do an exercise I came up with. Pick a 5 fret range anywhere on the neck, and play little wing (or another song you like that uses more than 4 chords) using as many different chord inversions as you can find in the area through the verse and chorus. Then find another 5 fret range and do it again. Then another. Then start mixing them all together.

I always start wanting to have a specific practice routine with a simple goal and get going practicing the major and penatonic scales for 15 minutes, I may learn a new lick or two, butr then I get distracted and noodle for the next two hours. It's harder to commit to the full practice routine than beginning it for me.

A great routine based on songs could be:
Alternate picking: the unison section (not unison solo) of Dream Theater's Metropolis 1
Sweep Picking: Again from Dream Theater, the intro sweeps from Glass Prision
Odd time signatures: Playing Dance of Eternity (from Dream Theater) to a metronome. Also serves as a general practice across all skills.
Then scales of your preference, sight reading and improvising (learning your favorite solos helps too)

Hey Tyler, did you first learn all of these techniques separately and spend a lot of hours focusing on only one technique or have you always had a practice routine like this? The reason why I am asking this is if you really practiced in this way ever since you started guitar I really do congratulate you on the amount of skill you acquired given the short time periods you dedicate to each aspect of guitar playing.
    Keep up the good work!

In a nutshell, from a guitar player who's been playing for over 40 years: every "routine" I have ever seen has been some version of a:) Practicing scales including major scales and modes, melodic minor, diminished, pentatonic b:) practicing all arpeggios in a key c; running your scales in intervals,3rd 4th and 5th intervals d:) learning chords, inversions, extensions e:) picking (don't forget finger style as as alternate and sweep picking, and legato). If you don't know your notes on your neck, major and minor scales, and how chords are constructed in the context of a major scale, start there. And most importantly, learn covers and how to play with others (much different then jamming to jam tracks in your bedroom). Transcribe solos.

just a beginer but i made a pretty good practice routine:)
    1. warm up,(Eruption by van halen)
2.play slowly( i go 80000 bpm but im just a beginer so you can go faster)
    3. work on sweep picking/shredding
    4. learn a few hendrix/stevie ray vaughn/slash solos (i know its easy, but im just staring out)
    5. work on/learn at least 7 pentatonix scales
    6. random improvising, just have fun! xd :)

When you practice, do you use a timer for every 15 minutes, or do you just estimate?

That weird creaking at 7:00 genuinely made me think that either my headphones were gonna break, or my skull was moving around. Freaky. The video was excellent though and taught me quite a lot.

Great video but you missed out checking your phone for messages and updating your Facebook profile!! A quick smoke, cup of tea and a sandwich, toilet break and just checking a few film trailers on you tube! So your 2 hour practice session is now 4 hours! Then you realise you've forgotten to pick the kids up from school!! 😩😂

I'm beginning today and doing some research as to what I should be doing for practicing and I was planning on practicing (not counting playing) for half an hour a day. Is that too little? Should I be doing more?

You said to practice based on who you listen to... now I’m JUST getting into guitar. Like yeah I’ve been playing basic chord (G, D, Em, A, E. C) for 5 years and just putting a capo on a song that needs it.. but now I’m really wanting to get into the deep part of it.. I play piano too.. been playing for 8 years... anyway I’ll get to what I need to say.... I really like Eric Johnson and I’m literally just throwing myself into the hard stuff and I’m just trying to play Cliffs Of Dover... what kind of exercise can I do to possibly help with me wanting to play that song?

I have a question and several suggestions. First: Where do you rest your right hand on the guitar when you're picking? I can't quite tell in the videos. But I've been trying to figure out where to place my hand without unintentionally muting the strings.
    Now, the suggestions..
Ever consider using Periscope? It'd be a great way to do live Q&As.
And, less serious but still worth suggesting... how about live-streaming, or even just recording and posting (without [much] editing) one of your daily practices? Nah, I like the Periscope idea better.

Rob G Rest it on the bass strings that you don't want ringing out. It took me a while to discover this myself.

Rob G In some situations you can press your pinkie finger on the pick guard, I don't do that often but if you really need to or want to.

    • @lastshanty
      @lastshanty 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Taylor Carter Keep at switching between the open and the barre chords. You'll suck in the beginning, but keep at it. It gets better.
Put the non barre notes first, then the barre finger, when you switch from an open chord, to make it easier. And don't worry about speed, do it slowly, you'll get there eventually!

Taylor Carter like with everything on guitar , the key to overcome hurdles is simple . Practice more . Period . Especially spend more time on tour areas where your struggling . It'll come eventually .
