- Driving in Bucharest, the capital of Romania. Bucharest is located in the south-east part of Romania, on the banks of the Dâmbovița river, less than 60 km (37.3 mi) north of the Danube River and the border with Bulgaria.
The city became capital in 1862 and is the center of Romanian media, culture, and art. It is described as the cultural, financial, entertainment, and media center in the country with a significant influence in Eastern Europe.
In January 2023, there were 1.74 million inhabitants living within the city limits, and adding the satellite towns around the urban area, the proposed metropolitan area of Bucharest would have a population of 2.3 million people.
