    I love this series!! You do such a good job training and watching ur puppy grow and get better and better at listening and learning is sooo cute😍😍 the only comments I would make for the first month getting a puppy is exposure and training in the outside world as well! Maybe not taking them on long walks but at least going out in the front yard or to a park that’s not super busy and making a point to feed ur dog and keep them feeling safe and comfortable outside especially when people or other dogs are walking by is very important! You do want your puppy to be familiar with the outside world that way they’re not afraid or anxious and still being able to give you their attention while outside with different noises and smells distracting them!

    I love this series, we just adopted a 3 month lab mix and I grew up in the generation of beat your dog into obedience. I never liked that approach bc my childhood dog was scared of my dad. We’ve been using some of these training methods and it’s been 3 days and she’s already making great progress, she understands the commands to sit, stay, leave it, on me, down as well as leash obedience on walks. We only train for 30 min at a time then she gets to play with her toys. She’s only had 1 accident in the house and it was because I miss interpreted the signs.

    I have a new puppy, Rosie, she just goes wild at food time. I saw one of your videos that covered that, tried it and it worked! I’m going to do that every day. She showed a big difference even the first time. I have been holding the bowl up out of reach and waiting for her to be calm. That wasn’t working. I love all your tips. I’m on oxygen and have to walk with a cart and I was getting so upset and starting to yell at Rosie I knew it was time to get help. I’m so thankful for TH-cam and all the great people out there sharing their knowledge with the world! THANK YOU!!!

    Thank you 🙏🏻 so very much for sharing! I can’t tell you how much this series is helping me. The biggest thing that I’ve learned 🤓 from you is that my puppies training is really all about my training. The more that I learn & teach to my Charlie, & the more consistent that I am, the better he learns. It really is my training, how well I listen & learn, & how well I can then try to educate my dog. Thanks 🙏🏻 again.

    I've really been enjoying your series with 5alive as his age in the series and our new golden are about the same. Concerning house training, we've had great luck using a bell set at the door. Even at 9 weeks we could tell the difference. She would very subtly nose the bell if she had to pee and hang and swing from it if she had to poop :-) , seriously! Not a poop in the house since day 1 and just a few pee accidents when it was our fault for not paying attention. No accidents since 10 wks or so.
    Also have watched all your puppy biting videos with some success. She's a very high energy field bred dog with a high prey drive (so hands are prey). We're really working on this :-) Thanks!

    I am absolutely loving this series and watching the videos over and over. I'm curious, though, how many of these strategies are advisable when adopting an older dog, either an older puppy of 3-4 months, or an adult dog of a year or two of age?

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      THIS is such a good question, mediocrepoetry! YES, you can start all of these foundational skills with a dog of any age. This is precisely how we begin with any rehomed/rescue dogs as well. There are always adjustments made for the dog's specific needs, but this kind of goal setting remains the same. ALL of our puppy training videos apply to adult dogs. They are simply the foundation on which we'll start building the skills. Happy Training!

      Love your videos. So helpful! Any chance you could talk about overcoming car sickness in puppies. I want to take my new golden retriever out with me on errands and visits but he drools like mad and ultimately vomits. So it's not too much fun and I've stopped taking him in the car because I don't want him to permanently associate travelling in the car with feeling terrible. Any suggestions or a future video possible?

      Me too! If it helps you feel any better I did some research after watching this video and found that my breed of puppy will not have complete bladder/bowel control til about 6mths. So having her fully potty trained at 4mths old just isn’t attainable! I take her out every hour (probably more) and she rings a bell to go but sometimes she will drop mid play session and just let it out! Lol even though she went out before our play started! So don’t be too hard on yourself if your puppy isn’t fully potty trained til 6mths! Or better yet, look up your breed (if possible) and see what age is biologically appropriate to be fully house trained! Til then you can only try your bestb

    I don't know if you still reply to comments on an older video, but I am wondering if you would recommend, especially if you don't have any other dogs at home, to visit a dog school, just so the puppy can learn how to act arround other puppies/dogs? Or what's the best way to get your pupppy used to other dogs and socialize it without owning other dogs yourself.

    We’ve had our puppy home for 3weeks, she is now 13wks and although she will always ring the bell to go out for poops, she won’t for pees! She really has no tell, she will just drop in the middle of playing to pee. Most of the time it’s right next to the door which is frustrating because I’m cleaning it properly so she clearly knows to go to the door but she doesn’t ring her bell! I am still taking her out every hour and it’s starting to get frustrating! I never scold her but if I see her drop to pee I run and take her straight outside. Usually it’s too late! Am I doing something wrong or is it normal for a 13wk old to not have complete bladder control yet? Everything else she has mastered beautifully!

    My lab puppy has got everything down except the crate. If he’s really exhausted he’ll go to sleep inside it (which is in our room, so he sleeps with us and takes naps alone in the bedroom during the day), but otherwise we’re dealing with some pretty bad separation anxiety at times. Slowly getting a little bit better, but sometimes I wonder if he’ll ever truly get over his fear of being left alone 100% as he gets older.

    So i got my puppy in january and ive tried to be very vigilant over him but sometimes i look away briefly and hes had an accident i try to stop him in the midst snd immediatly pick him up and put him outside to let him finish.
    Its kind of fustrating because one time i was very vigilant and he gave no signal of having to go and literally peed right in front of me to which i gave a loud no spooking him and taking him out asap. Hes had like 3 accidents that i have spotted and or found. I dont know how to prevent it hes only out when i am watching him and when hes not hes in his crate. He doesnt go in his crate unless hes had diarriah and cant help it. I take him out often and he does it outside i even stay longer out to make sure he doesnt have to go. When is he going to get it that pottying inside is not acceptable?? My other dog got pretty quickly but then again i got her at 6 to 7 months. Shes now 3yrs. My puppy now is 4 or 5 months...he was born november or last year.

    Love your videos - been following them with our new border collie pup. He’s now 11 weeks.
    The one thing we can’t get to grips with is the house line and his chewing of it. We redirect every time but it’s relentless - he obsesses over chewing it and will take a chew toy but then within seconds go back to the house line. This happens time and time again and it’s exhausting.

      I had a similar issue with my puppy chewing on his bed despite giving him appropariate alternatives with praise and treats. Eventually, I ended up giving my verbal correction, picking up the bed and leaving the room for 30s. I made sure he was calm before I came back in and then very calmly put the bed back down. Praise for good choices, rinse and repeat. Maybe some version of this could work for you?

    If we need to be away for work on weekdays, should we train our puppy to pee inside the house? Can puppies be trained to pee both outside and inside the house?

    We've had our Yorkie mix puppy for about a week and a half now. We're not having very many problems with house training and she's ok being in her crate during the day without much fuss (as long as she's under my desk while I work from home 😬), but at night, she can't stand being in the crate by herself. She'll cry for hours and keep us up. However, she'll sleep all night (except for a midnight bathroom break) if she's with us on the bed. Is this going to be a bad thing in the future?

    I started giving mu puppy his meal while teaching him tricks and now he seems unable to eat his food without engaging with me. I'm scared we're stuck in this, it's like I have to force him to eat (I give him the right ration for his age and weight) otherwise he just goes on another activity, and will skip a meal. This isn't good for his weight (he was underweight and not fed well when I got him). He is 11 weeks old and I've had him for 10 days. Anyone has advice ?

    Is it realistic to pretty much have a fully house trained puppy after a month? I’ve heard some say it can take 6 months. That seems crazy to me. Also what do you think of the door bells?

      My Lab puppy was fully house trained after a month. We first started out making sure we took him out every 1-2 hours, then working up to 3-4 as he got older, all the while making sure as he got used to the idea of “outside” meaning time to potty. At 12 weeks, we pretty much just leave the door open to our yard for him to go to the bathroom, and even if the door is closed he’ll wait patiently for us to let him out. Every dog is different, but it takes consistency. Have faith in yourself!

      Our puppy is 13wks old (we’ve had her 3weeks) and she goes out every hour, will ring the bell to poop, but still drops to pee randomly on a whim! It’s very frustrating! I love our bell because sometimes she does have to go right after we got back inside and if we didn’t have the bell I wouldn’t know she’s at the door ready to go! I’m thinking the accidents have to do with bladder control. I’m not convinced she has complete bladder control yet simply because she doesn’t always give me signs she has to pee. So maybe it has to do with size and age? Make sure you’re cleaning with the enzymatic cleaner as well! Otherwise they will always pee inside!

      Most people don’t. I’d like to see them do a training video like this with a chihuahua! Note that they are working with larger working breeds/people pleasing dogs, they are overall more trainable.

    Would you like to raise a guide dog, and make a new series? I would like to raise one later, but not sure if I can make it successful. Most rules are the same, but guide dogs can not eat human food, and not play ball games to make them too exited.

    Just brought home a 5lb puppy. She is so little, all the treats even small ones are hard to use as she has to stop and spend time eating them. Also she doesnt love her kibble (and even the small breed puppy kibble takes effort for her to eat). I am not sure how to lure and train without easy to eat treats! IDK what to do

She used to be in a big cage but she was free to ofc. Well now the dog (she) was put in her cage as it was her safe place and old flat and she broke it in 2 days. Please help me help her to not be put in azil.

      I'm not sure, but to me it looks like "dried baby cow bladder" - sorry, I just know the german name for it, but if you go to a site of an online shop you can probably find the item. Seems to be a nice and easy snack especially for puppyteeth, trains chewing without it being to stressful for the growing bones and teeth
      Edit: my puppy is getting born in around 15 days and i definetly added it to my basket for the first fooditems order^^

    • @Kenzi0815
      @Kenzi0815 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      At another point it seems to be a "hard cheese stick".
      Another recommendation would be "coffee wood" - needs more supervision, but even if ingested the wood is soft and wont hurt the gums. As far as I researched these 3 options are the best for puppies (that can also be eaten, not just chewed)
      For chewing toys overall I bought kongs and nylabones.

      Look up videos on the puppy blues. Almost all dog owners (old and new) go through it. Went through with it with my puppy at 9-10 weeks old (literally had a huge panic attack), and now at 12 weeks old he’s gotten so much better and is so much more manageable and fun to work with. If you feel too overwhelmed, however, seek professional help from a trainer. Just give it some time, and if after a couple more weeks you’re still feeling they aren’t having their needs met, then think about rehoming.

      Yeah my puppy is 15 weeks now and we feel like we just got over a HUGE hump. Hang in there. Remember a crate is always an option if you need a break. We would go through the checklist. Poop yes, potty yes, food yes, play/training yes and we say yes to all, back in the crate he goes till the next round. Even if he cries, we know all of his needs were met.

      Look up the puppy blues and know you’re not alone! It will pass, I promise you! 10wks is still extremely young! You will not have a potty trained puppy at 10wks old! She should have specified that age matters, she’s probably assuming most people get their puppies between 8-10wks!

    • @sisterursuline
      @sisterursuline 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hang in there. I had a full blown panic the week I got my puppy and had to go stay with family for a bit - no kidding! These videos didn’t help, they actually made it worse for me. They are unattainable for a lot of working people. Being in a pen made my puppy cry all the time and it was breaking me. Instead I have a puppy proofed room with easy to clean carpet overlay and he (and I!) are much happier. Felt like I could hardly shower or cook or do anything else before this because I was following these silly puppy schedules which are hourly in many cases. Too complicated. Don’t think that everybody is training their dog this way, they aren’t. Or having them potty trained in a month! Come on.

    Crating inside the house is illigal here in Finland. Crates are used just for transportation or _temporarily_ like during sickness. It outrageous to keep dogs in crates where they can’t move much.

    Fully housetrained in a month? Seriously, I love this channel and appreciate all the advice, but it's starting to make me feel like a failure as a puppy owner and it's not much fun to watch anymore. I've had my 9 week old Aussie pup for going on 3 weeks and no way do I believe he will be housebroken in another week. Even with constant supervision, houseline, etc , he has random accidents right in front of me. Everything excites him at this age, especially if he sees my cat.
    Maybe HER dog will be, but every dog is different and age has a huge impact. How many accidents has this puppy had? I never see any admissions.

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there, Laura! This is an important question! 5 Alive had a few accidents in the first couple of weeks he was home. He was originally pad trained when he came to Kayl, so she had to quickly teach him that going indoors wasn’t an option. If you’re still regularly having accidents, you need to be more proactive about taking your puppy out! Even if that means an extra couple trips at random times, even if your puppy hasn’t given you any signals.
      Kayl’s puppy hadn’t had any accidents after about the second week home. But we wouldn’t consider the puppy “house trained”. She’s still putting in extra effort to make sure the puppy doesn’t have an accident, and she knows that if it does happen, it’s time to increase the management and supervision!
      Most importantly, don’t get frustrated! It’s a process, and every puppy’s timeline is different. But after 1 month at home, you can definitely set a goal for no more accidents indoors!
      Happy Training!

      Yeah I can’t watch these or other dog training videos like them anymore, since getting my puppy.. they’re perfectionistic and unattainable for people who lead normal lives, work, have other commitments etc. My pup and I are happier for it.

      Feeling a total a failure too. I watched loads of these videos before we picked up our pup and have watched endless hours of them since we got her. So far - we go outside lots of times in a day and she rarely wee’s but as soon as she comes in she goes wee and poo on the carpet. We are taking it in turns sleeping on the settee with her on a night and she sleeps from 10pm - 6am but when we’ve tried to put her in her crate she whines and barks incessantly and tries shredding the towel we put in there. We are totally knackered. She is 12 weeks old now and nothing is working. She nips and bites all the time and my arms are cut the shreds. We’ve tried using a lead on her in the house but she wants to rag the lead - these videos all make it looks so easy but we’ve obviously got a devil dog.

      @@sheenaghbyrne4763 Right there with you, my friend. I really do appreciate these videos, but I think they really make it seem way easier than it is, especially for very young puppies.
      Mine cries in the crate too, but covering it completely with a blanket helps him settle. Maybe that would help you?
