  • It's super easy to make a vector brush in Affinity Designer - here's how to do it!
PS - that house picture is amazing and I won't hear anything else about it 😂

Hello thank you for all these amazing video tutorials your making to help us all learn Affinity Designer and photo I appreciate all the had work that goes into making all of the videos. Is it possible for you to do a video tutorial on making intersecting letters together like your B&B logo. Thanks from a new fan from New Orleans.

The only issue is it's raster image repeated along a vector path. This is fine but Designer could use a true vector object repeated along a vector path brush; a true vector brush.

I created a vector brush using one of my scanned images (a drawing of a lemon/lime/orange bunch that I painted in with water markers) instead of a shape like you did, and my brush painted in bxw, though my image is color. I guess that was because my image was pixel-based. So, I created the same brush in Pixel Persona and it painted in color. Thank you. I learned a lot playing around with the instructions that you shared.

That’s a really good idea and use of the vector brush 👍🏽

If you do draw your path reversed and your brush stroke is upside down you can reverse the path in the tool palette up top (I use iPad so not sure exactly where it is on desktop) and should fix it. I use it all the time as well when using text on a path to flip the text to the right side of the circle. Great tutorial, thank you for this 🙏

I, for one, love the house. I grow so tired of these so-called artists who feel the need to conform to reality and place doorknobs on the doors! ;) (Thanks for the tutorial, as always!)

I know right?! Who needs doorknobs! Two way flappy doors like they have in restaurant kitchens are the way forward!

If you know, what's the difference in the Affinity Designer Vector Brush (used to creating my own in Illustrator) to the Pixel Brush. The entire Pixel (Raster) thing in a Vector program is so confusing to me. Thanks in advance.

The vector brush work in (as the name suggests) vector which is calculated based on maths and some fancy algorithm. It basically means that once you use it to creat a brush stroke, the brush stroke can be edited and readjusted to your liking. Vector lines are also infinitely scaleable meaning you can zoom in as far as you want and it'll always be a straight line.
The pixel brush uses pixels to paint the brush stroke. Once you painted it, it can be readjusted only redrawn. Since it uses pixels if you zoom in on the lines eventually you'll see the jagged pixel edge of the stroke.
Hope that makes more sense of it 👍🏽

Well my understanding is that the Vector brushes in AD are actual raster based image that follows (stretched or repeated) along a vector curve that you draw.
I know it's confusing. Technically a 'true vector' file is defined as only consisting of lines and curves with solid color fills but no matter what vector application you use when you start applying gradients, FX styles etc then they will be saved as raster components in your vector file.

It is not hard to underrate something what doesn't exist. Vector brush in Designer is pixel brush on a vector path. The problem is that no way to expand it.
