  • Welcome to Agriculture Academy, where we show you how to start a profitable business in agriculture.
    There are many small animals that you can rear on your small holding. Goats are one of the most rewarding, because the does are prolific milkers and their meat is a low-fat source of protein. If it is the milk you are interested in, then this video is perfect for you. Goat milk offers so many benefits, it can usually be consumed by those allergic to cow’s milk and the high fat content makes it suitable for cheese and soap making.
    Stay tuned until the end of this video and we’ll give you your very own info-graphic that you can download.

    We have Mini Nubians created by crossing Nigerian Dwarf goats with Nubians. They are easier to manage than standard sized Nubians, eat less, but make more milk than Nigerian Dwarf goats.

  • @genegoodwin8925
    @genegoodwin8925 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    We started out with Nubians years ago but switches to Alpines. We did have a Saanen Buck once, but he was way too much to handle. We now stay with Alpines who milk more months per year than the Nubians and my wife makes many cheeses. We also make soap and yogurt.
    There is a book written by Mary Ann Toth titled "Goats Produce Too" which we recommend to anyone thinking about getting goats or anyone who already has goats. It is by far the best book we have ever found for raising goats and using the milk.

      @@sprout5606 Yes, it is Mary Jane Toth. (my mistake sorry) It is a great book if you love goats and want to make things with the milk. My wife made about 12 different cheeses, four different yogurts, delious ice cream and our own soap for years. My wife even called MAry Jane once and they talked for quite a while. If you love goats and want to use the milk you will ever regret buying Mary Jane's book "Goats Produce Too".

    Am a Ugandan interested and having a passion to dairy goat farming in an urban setting but my challenge is where to get good dairy goats. Thanks for this interesting episode about dairy goats

    • @katrinaanon1038
      @katrinaanon1038 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you are looking for goats in an urban setting for dairy, consider the Nigerian Dwarf(ND). In general, you can raise 3 NDs in the same space as one regular goat. The biggest problem is making sure the NDs you buy are good producers of milk.
      Not all NDs are raised for milk. Their small size lends themselves to being pets, plus their temperaments can make them good pets. So make sure if dairy is your intention get a ND with proven dairy genetics.
      The other thing not explained in this video is that dairy goats have a lactation (milking) cycle. This is generally consider 305 days from the birth of the last kid. You can go beyond that but you need to basically consider it is going to be 305 days from birth of the last kid, and then 2 months of rest for the doe before she is freshened (bred) again and after 5 months before the doe gives birth and you get back to 305 days of milk production.
      It is also better to think of milk production by weight instead of volume. Roughly speaking you could get a little over an average 1 liter per day (roughly 1 kilogram) per day over the 305 day milking cycle. If you have several an offset breeding times you should have at least one doe in milk and the rest dry (ret period) or pregnant.
      The downside is the amount of time this takes. Realize you are getting an average of 1 kg per day, and you need to milk twice a day to get reliably that kg of milk. Are you going to ok with get 1/2 kg of milk in the morning and that 1/2 kg in the evening? Also realize that if you have one buck (male goat) it has to eat, but that buck can breed a number of does and he will happily do so.
      Goats are fussier eaters than most people realize, but not too fussy. Also good forage (food) makes good milk. You cannot feed them junk and expect quality milk. The male, which you may need, also needs to be kept away from the does except when breeding.
      Good luck, I hope this helps.

    My Saanen and grand champion Alpines. My Alpine always kidded two girls that at fair took grand Champs. My Saanen ( called banana udders) won the milking contest. She had a 7 wk old wether that got reserved and they, the buyers gave it back to my son. Yes it was a strong 4-H group full of different clubs but, as the leader of our GTTOPPERS I l loved it. Now a granny on the other side of our continent and a 6 yr old grandson I am hoping to get our g.k. into it.

    What wool/sheep breeds can we choose in tropic are (Indonesia)?.. 😊😊😊

    • @AgricultureAcademy
      @AgricultureAcademy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try and find a breed with very fine wool or hair, as opposed to those with very thick coats. Try to research any local breeds, or select a breed that has been bred to suit a similar climate to the one you experience.
      This could be an interesting topic for a future video. Thanks!
