    --------------------------------------------
During the reign of Emperor Yao, the people of ancient China were constantly plagued by deadly floods along the Yellow River. Eager to put an end to the devastation, Yao selected Gun, one of his officials, to devise a plan. After nine years of failed attempts using dams and dikes, Gun's employment came to a questionable end. After his passing, Yu inherited his father's work. Learning from Gun's failures, Yu set out to construct a series of canals to direct the surging river into nearby fields and smaller waterways.
Legacy of Yu is a solo-only, fully-resettable, nonlinear campaign game in which you step into the role of the legendary hero of the Xia Dynasty, Yu the Great. It will be your job to build the canals ahead of the impending flood, while also defending your growing village against neighboring barbarian tribes. With each game, stories will be shared and new gameplay elements added. The campaign features a self-balancing system which adapts to how well you are doing. The campaign ends once you either win or lose seven games.

5.0 - My absolutely favorite games. You can pry them out of my cold dead hands.
4.5 - Love this game! At the same time missing something that would make it a 5. Could be hard to table, lacking variability, a little light, etc.
4.0 - Really great game, almost always keeping, although has meaningful complaints as to what takes away from the experience.
3.5 - Really enjoyed, don't love it, may lose out to better games but the idea of never playing again is a bit sad.
3.0 - A good game, would play and suggest with the right people, if I never played it again wouldn't lose any sleep.
2.5 - A game I'd play again , but will never suggest it myself
    2.0 - A game I don't want to play again
    1.5 - A game I can't find any reason to recommend
1.0 - A game that is just bad.

Legacy of Yu is my favorite type of solo game. You either win or you lose. I don’t like playing against an AI and I don’t like trying to get a better score than last time.

I also really liked that you could walk away in the middle of your turn and come back and know exactly what to Do. Sometimes solo games you have so much going on that if you get distracted for a second you can't remember if you missed something or already did something.

I don't envy game designers. It must be so hard to find that goldilocks zone of difficulty where you aren't on a cakewalk nor doomed to failure and to find that balance for a majority of players

I played through the whole campaign with 3 losses and 7 wins. The gameplay is fun and does get more challenging as the game progresses, but yes you definitely get the strategy after a few games and can use that same strategy for the rest of the wins to complete the campaign, without too much variation. I think I’ll keep it in my collection as I’d like to pull it out every year or so as I really like how easy the set up and tear down is, the art and graphic design is beautiful, and there’s enough going on with the mechanics of the game that I can try several new strategies each game. Thanks for the review.

As always, I appreciate your honesty in reviews, including explaining why you feel that way.
I am thoroughly enjoying my first campaign ten games in. It’s perfect for me in several ways as a solo player - quick setup/tear down, interesting puzzle that evolves with each play, a reasonable-length campaign, hour or less playtime.
All that said, I hear your concerns and how it may not work for all. Fortunately, there are many games to try and find one that works for you. I’m glad I found one with Legacy of Yu

I only played one game session yet, and loved it! To my surprise, I crushed it… Good pace at building the canals at the right time to get stronger, building huts, farms and the other one whose name I don’t remember as soon as possible, hiring new workers as early as I could and cashing them under the lower spaces for constant income and dealing with barbarians just enough so they wouldn’t overwhelm me. At the end, I built the last canal, killed all barbarians and still had some resources to spare. I had to check the rules to check if I did something wrong. Don’t get me wrong, it was challenging and I took my sweet time (~90 minutes?), but it was very rewarding to win that first game.
But I can totally see what you mean, especially on the repetitive nature of the game. I’ll certainly play for the whole campaign and see how it grows on me. Even if, probably, I don’t replay it and do not give it a second run, after 8-13 games I definitely will have got my money’s worth out of it. :)
Thank you for the review, Alex! I enjoyed watching your first 3 playthroughs. I’ll check the other ones at Camp Co-Op!

Grabbed this yesterday. Really nice components and art. Interesting puzzle. Nice size (I solo large Euros like Obsession and Feast For Odin, so it's nice to have a solo-only game you can set up so fast). And I love the fact that the campaign is fully resettable. I'll be sure to share this with my friends. The fact that the publisher encourages this (it even says so in the manual to lend it out!) is really nice.

This is why this hobby is so great.
There is a game put there for everyone. Everyone will not have the same taste in games.
I have played this game 10 times and have a 50% winning rate.
I have been enjoying the plays, but once I complete the campaign, I can't see myself playing another campaign.
Although I like the game, Raiders of Scythia is still my preferred game.
Thanks for an awesome video and take care.

I would disagree with two of the problems. Yes the game is repetitive, but most of my solo-only games are (Finished, Colossus). So I play them in sessions: 2-5 games in a week, then I pause for several months. About the first mission - today I restarted the compain and won #1. It was very close at the middle. Maybe I will have to loose #2 or #3 to get a bonus, but nothing is fixed. My main problem is the lick of the draw - in the previous compain I restarted game #6 or 7 and can say that getting 2 twisted barbarians among the first 4 can doom the mission regardless of the number of powers that you have gathered. In my opinion variations with shorter campaign or one-shot missions could make the game better (in the long run).

Hi. New to LofY. So far so good. However I have lost game 2 of the campaign and have card No 47 as a result of the Defeat Card. I'm instructed to file it under Other Setup Cards. Then what? When and how do I use it? Nothing in the Rulebook to explain

Finished the campaign with 10 games, and I feel what you mean. Last several games I've played just to finish the campaign and open some last legacy elements. Challange was no longer there and it felt a bit too repetative. At least the time spent on last games was also quite short, so I don't feel sorry because of that. Currently I don't see myself playing the campaign again.

I can see what you are saying and cannot disagree however I have played 7 games so far and I love the puzzle. I have thought a couple of times about what you said in terms of are you actually winning or is the game designed to make you lose and then win. However in my last couple of games I have run the course with the extra things I gained for loosing but the bad stuff for winning is still there and I am still winning. I have improved my game play, understanding of the rules and strategy. I think if I started again I could win that first game because I now fully grasp the game rather than the game running me. Overall though I just love it. It’s so engaging and you are fully lost for an hour of puzzling. I think yes it could be repetitive but I have already played this game more than most other games I own and for me as a regular solo player it’s fab but I think it’s absolutely possible for other people to feel as you did.

I was not expecting this review to take the path it took, I will admit that. Thanks for your thoughts.
I am two games in only: win followed by a lost. Both at the end by a nail. I had quite some fun these two games, but I can see and understand what your complains are. Specially the repetitiveness of the game, something I am also afraid of. A good way I use to solve that part is having a pause in it and playing something else in the meantime xD
For now I am quite pumped to play the game and want to use that fuel to go through a full campaign. At the end I will decide if I want to keep it to play a second one in the long run or sell it. Future me problem

  • @brettchristensen6734
    @brettchristensen6734 ปีที่แล้ว

Not sure I agree, but it is hard to argue much. I lost my first like many, as a learning game. I only lost once more though, after winning the next 4 and then taking a break. The only game changer IMO was the first lost bonus. I expect that losing your first 2-3 games can change the experience. The one defense that I would say to the "lose the first game" argument is that the design may have been to use the first loss bonus as a standard run, with the difficulty amplifier trying to sweep. I won 7-2. I loved it. That said, don't feel the need to revisit but also 100% got my money's worth out of it. I can see the challenge of trying to sweep it on a replay, but for now, have loaned it out to a friend to enjoy.

The way you appreciate the mechanics of this game, I respect this review.
I have ordered the game and hope to enjoy it many times…. …but I entirely respect this review. It really shows your honesty and credibility.
One experiment I would love you to try is: reset the campaign and run the first scenario again.
This would show you if you have indeed learned how to play better versus the game’s rails just drove you to victory.

Thanks for your review, Alex. Very informative as I make a decision to purchase it or not, since it carries a hefty price tag. I really enjoyed playing it at first. To me as a game that would have been a one-shot, it would have worked. The way it forces you to repetitively play the same thing and also not even feel like you are really in control... Unfortunately over time it didn't work for me anymore

  • @toe.knee.sobaskie1678
    @toe.knee.sobaskie1678 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I found it to be too easy even as I kept winning. I played the final 3 games with a house rule that I needed to pay for the first townsfolk card. I still kept winning. I do believe that my continued winning was the direct result of a particular loss benefit card. With that being said I still really liked it. I might play it again. I think that it would be a very fun two player only game with a small expansion that added pieces and you both cooperatively work towards beating the game but also need to do something to beat your opponent.

To me it's like Paleo, a game that I can play once or twice a year through all of its content, then happily shelve it until the next time. I didn't experience it much as being repetitive, but that's because within the span of the campaign, I liked each session a lot. Even if it took me 13 to win!

I have played this 9 times now. Lost first 3 games, then won 6 in a row. My enjoyment for this game went 'down-up-down'. After feeling hopeless because the game felt very difficult and punishing in the start i finally won a couple of games, which made me continue. But after that I kept winning, because I found a "winning formula", which made the game tedious.
I'm gonna finish the campaign, but then i'm probably gonna sell my copy 🤷‍♂️

I see your point. But most of the boons you get for winning or losing only last a few games and are not that powerful. It’s a small, short term boost to level things out. I played the campaign through a few times now and feel the tight balance of the game remains throughout. No matter if you win or lose. Which boon did you think was overpowered to disrupt the balance of the game?

I really enjoyed Legacy of Yu. I have played through the campaign, end result 7-1. It really feels like a euro game made for one. I won my first game, lost my second. And then it was a combination of me figuring it out and the advantage I got. I found it to be too easy. Will replay it again, using the promo to increase the difficulty and getting a different advantage. For me I didn't think the first game was pointless, regardless of if I won or not. I removed 10 cards from the game and that means progress. I think the process of geting through the unlocks makes for a rewarding progress each game. Sadly there wasn't much left to unlock by the end. For me personally, it is better than Hadrian's Wall.
