Thank you Ms. Elsie for all the joy and inspiration you've brought us. I was 15 when I decided to make my very first Aran sweater. So seven years ago, I came across this video and fell in love!! Every time I worked on my sweater, this video was playing to push me on. I finished it at 16. I'm now 22 and I still have it. I'm starting another one and had to revisit my tradition of watching this video for encouragement. My heart sank when I read about the passing of the knitting Queen.
May you continue to rest in peace, Ms. Elsie.

I too am greatly saddened! She was indeed a lovely lady. We were planning a video of how to use the bottom portion of her wedding dress, maybe 2 yards for a christening outfit . She was awesome. She was buried in her golfing attire :) I'm sure she knitted the cap! Priceless bittersweet memory.Thank you for paying tribute to her all these past years later...

So sad to hear Elsie has passed. All the more reason we need to hold onto these traditions. My Nana knit all of her life. She knit our school sweaters, winter hats, gloves. She knit for each of her grandchildren (she had 25+ grandchildren). She knit Aran sweaters for us as children (faster to knit because they were much smaller). Her talent with a pair of knitting needles was unbelievable. She taught me, my sister and cousins how to knit. I sadly have to say I haven't picked up a pair of knitting needles in over 20 years.....I have a knitting basket with wool and needles, maybe it's time for me to pick it up again.

Gorgeous sweaters. I have a few hand knits from Ireland and many I’ve made myself. I do wash them, not often, in water being care ful not to agitate them to prevent felting. Wash only when soiled. Hang outside when it’s cold to freshen them up.

Of all the Scandinavian Knitting Patterns...the Aran is the most beautiful. I do however, appreciate the Faire Isle Pattern, and Norwegian knit can also be very pretty. So many different styles are available. And that wool!!! Wool, when I was a child...was hated, for its roughness and itchiness. But now that I am older...the warmth of them is much prized. I think maybe, the wool I experienced as a child may have been an inferior quality however. Today's wool, can be so soft. Merino is quite nice. And cashmere...although expensive, is absolute heaven. Thanks for the video...two thumbs up. 👍🤗👍

In the Uk these sweaters are known as Aran knits, and the wool weight used is also called "Aran". The original oiled Aran wool certainly is water repellent, but also VERY smelly. You simply cannot wear them in close proximity to others, lol, as they will start sniffing and exclaiming about the strange odour. It eventually washes out too, if you use modern detergents or soap. It is also very heavy and slightly stiff to wear because the knitting tension is fairly "un-relaxed".

I just saw this video recently and loved the blanket pattern as well. So, I went on a quest to find it. I don't know the whole pattern, but I do know that the main pattern in the body of the project is called "Irish Eyes". I found it on ravelry.com - the project called Irish Eyes baby blanket. In order to get just the pattern in the blanket on the couch you would need to work just the just Cable panel B.
