As I mentioned on Patreon this movie, and the movie "Gremlins", prompted the very first PG-13 rated movies.
Loved how you noticed the Club Obi-Wan in the beginning.
4:34 - 4:38 Fun Fact: The guy that walks Indy, Willie, and Short Round to the plane is a cameo by American actor Dan Aykroyd. I highly recommend the Ghostbusters movie series that he's in.
8:44 - 9:50 One of my favorite scenes of the movie. Indy and Short Round arguing over their poker game. While Willie tries to get away from the wildlife.
17:34 - 17:51 This is the scene that made this a PG-13 rated movie. And it's the scene that still creeps me out til this day.
This is a good movie. It's difficult to rate this one. Because 'Raiders of the Lost Ark" and the next one "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" usually ties as my favorite of the Indiana Jones movies.

While I'm not obsessed with jewelry and money like she is, and I also don't scream like her, I'd probably be as freaked out/ hesitant to do these adventury things as she was. Can't say I'd be as brave as Short Round even though he's younger than me. I think they did a decently realistic job of having a character out of place in an adventure movie.

We lived close enough to the park that commercials for the ride were on TV with Saturday morning cartoons. Waiting for our trip to King's Island that summer seemed like an eternity. Fun Facts: The exterior of Pankot Palace was realised through the use of both matte paintings & a set constructed at Elstree Studios here in the UK. The bridge & village sequences were filmed in Sri Lanka….oh & the bats are fruit bats, not vampire bats.
Harrison Ford suffered a severe spinal disc herniation by performing a somersault while filming the scene with the assassin in Jones's bedroom. A hospital bed was brought on set for Ford to rest between takes. Lucas stated, "He could barely stand up, yet he was there every day so shooting would not stop. He was in incomprehensible pain, but he was still trying to make it happen."
The guard crushed by the roller was played by Pat Roach; the same actor who played the Nazi guard who is diced by the plane in Raiders!!! He also played General Kael in Willow….which is also well worth watching!!
Interestingly Temple of Doom isn’t actually the second film. If you go by the years the films are set in the sequence goes as follows.
    Temple of Doom - 1935
Raiders of the Lost Ark - 1936
    Last Crusade - 1938
Kingdom of The Crystal Skull - 1957
Indy 5 title tbc - 1960s (this based on them recreating the NYC welcome home parade for the Apollo 11 astronauts in Glasgow & also from what I saw on the location shoot in North Yorkshire)

Here's a fun fact for you: a lot of the action scenes in this movie were planned for _Raiders_ but got cut because there's only so much you can put in one movie. This includes the raft scene, the mine cart chase, and the whip vs sword fight.
Kate Capshaw suffered almost as many mishaps in filming as her character did: she got a shiner when part of the board Key He Quan hit one if the big guys with broke, and a big piecechit her eye (the crew showed up the next day with black eyes painted on); had a couple near-panic attacks filming the scenes with snakes and bugs (Willie tossing that snake away is all that remains of a longer scene that got cut); one of the elephants ate that vintage dress she wears in the Shanghai scenes and they had to claim insurance and rebuild it before doing pick-ups and reshoots.
Amrish Puri shaved his head for this role and kept it that way until he retired from acting, and apparently in his day he was India's answer to Christopher Lee: the guy you get when you need an imposing bad guy.

If you’re new to Indiana Jones. I’m right there with ya. In fact, this is still the only Indiana Jones movie I’ve ever watched. But I HAVE played LEGO Indiana Jones which is a great LEGO game and video game in general. However the last time I’ve ever watched this movie fully was when we rented it from the local library in my hometown. And I was VERY young at the time. And I remember being so terrified of the part where he literally pulls the guy’s heart out and the guy somehow STILL alive after that. But I still love this film so much. Good on you Stephen Spielberg.

Thank you for loving this and NOT hating on Willie! She was deliberately not like Marion to give Indy a different type of love interest, an "indoor" girl - one out of her element. And she provided a lot of fun comedy. I know I'll get a lot of hate for liking her character, but so be it. George and Steven wanted a different love interest (like Bond) for each movie. That's also why this was set in 1935, one year before Raiders in 1936 - so Marion is still in Nepal during the events of this movie. Please watch Last Crusade as well as Crystal Skull - Crystal Skull also gets too much hate. I love it as much as the others.

Willie was a good character idea realised poorly. In the end the result is annoying character though.
Fish out of water but has an arc and eventually rises quite a bit to the terrible situation. That's solid grounding.
Not sure Kate Capshaw was ever the problem. I'm sure she was directed to play Willie that way.
Great Indy movie, still the weakest of the trilogy. I don't count that 'other' movie.
I feel like a fan edit that took out a few of the more ridiculous Willie screams, especially the 'off-camera' ones, cut the 'We're not sinking, we're crashing.' line and made a couple of tweaks would greatly improve the character. Because that punch in the mine cart, that's a golden character moment.

ToD gets a bad rap, but it's my favorite of the IJ movies. Unlike Raiders, Indy actually accomplishes something other than killing bad guys - he rescues hundreds of children from slavery and returns a sacred artifact to the village.
And Short Round is the best! I sincerely hope Ke Huy Quan will take up the mantle of the series once Harrison retires the character. I would love to see him tilt the hat up and say "Dr. Round"
My headcanon is that Shiva delivers Indy to the village to save his people. And because the cult is using the name Kali for a diety that is clearly not Kali 👹 Shiva would be displeased by this depiction. By invoking Shiva's name against Mola Ram in the finale, he causes the shankara to ignite but isn't burned by the one he catches.

For me, Temple of Doom is one of the most underrated movies of all time. It goes balls-out in the action and absurdity so you have to admire its daring, even if it's not your cup of tea. The relationship between Indy and Short Round is such a breath of fresh air, and Ford has never been more charismatic in a movie.
I am perplexed, though, that they didn't go with the obvious choice of making Willie gradually adapt (just a bit) to the increasingly extreme events around her. I appreciate initially making her completely different from Marion, and to have her be this prissy queen... but that only really works for the audience if she's allowed to undergrow character growth. And yet, they didn't do that. I have to think SOMEONE along the way suggested it, and George Lucas/Spielberg just rejected the idea.

    • @brokenrhyme
      @brokenrhyme 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @WastedPo
      @WastedPo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@brokenrhyme - I think the difference is that people liked her personality off the bat. Willie was (intentionally) grating. So it was odd that they didn't allow Willie to change - it would've been such an easy and logical story choice.

Temple of Doom is ok, it’s certainly not terrible, but the first movie set such a high bar it gets a bad rap in comparison. It just suffers from being the weakest of the original trilogy. (Crystal Skull has a much worse reputation than Temple of Doom, South Park even did an episode making fun of how bad that one was. I never saw that one though.)

George Lucas, and Steven Spielberg were both going through divorce, making this film -they weren't in good moods.
The film was shot in Sri Lanka, and the location was not "named" as India turned down filming rights,....with some old imagery of how India was shown un the past. This story is set in 1935, a year before "Raiders" so it's a prequel. Yet, the imagery of the cult, in south Asia, has a number of viewers mark this as their least favorite Indy Jones film (or, maybe not).
If you ever view films from the 1930's or around, made by Hollywood,...well, even into the 80's, when "pale face actors" play Asians - Lost Horizon, for example, or Alec Guinness as an Indian Guru in 1985's "Passage to India",...Speilberg cast Asians, which is correct, yet by imitating how much of "the civilized world" depicted Asia,...yes, there are a few problems with this film too.
And, if not mentioned by the other 275 comments, Kate Capshaw, who portrays Willi Scott, became the wife of Steven Spielberg, after this film. They are married still :)

I had a lot of fun with this movie when it came out in the theaters. Nothing touches Raiders but this was enjoyable. I’m one of the few who actually liked Kate Capshaw and thought their tryst was an amusing diversion. The Willy Scott character gets unfairly derided. It’s ok to have a reluctant heroine who does just enough to warrant respect. Marion had her moments of dependence. Not as many, but they were there.

The weakest of the trilogy, mainly because of the female lead. Luckily, the sidekick Short Round saves the day. 😀
I kept wishing for horrible things to happen to Willie. I would have loved this as a Indy & Shorty movie. But it was probably best that Willie was so annoying, since this movie is technically a prequel to Raiders, so he was free to reconnect with Marion. And thank goodness for that.
The awesome Pat Roach appearing as the overseer of the slaves, and probably his worst death ever: into the rock crusher. Ugh!
I loved the mine cart chase. It was one of my favorite parts of the old arcade game too. 🙂And Willie was more helpful by this time too, which was kinda redeeming. Still didn't like her though. And nowhere as much as Spielberg did (if I remember correctly he and Kate Capshaw got married after working together on this movie).
I loved Short Round. This was the only time we saw him in the trilogy, and I kinda hated that. He was awesome as a character in this.

This movie is better made as an adventure movie, it's more structured and ongoing than the first one. I like both 1 and 2 for different reasons, unlike most who dislike this one. And, Willy is not AS MUCH a damsel in distress as some claim her to be. No, she's no Lara Croft but herself. Not everyone is a badass. Furthermore, Short-round is supposed to be the sidekick here, not Willy.
