    They only penalize "half the distance to the goal" when then penalty yardage is greater than the distance to the goalline. If you are on the 10 yard line and you get a 15 yard penalty, they only mark off half the distance to the goal (5 yards in this case).

    • @SPFW21
      @SPFW21 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The only thing that confuses me is that the ball was down at the 38...15 yard penalty brings it to the 23...another 15 yards should've been 1st down at the 8. The 1st penalty didn't bring them within the 15 yard mark. What am I missing here? Did the ref just make a mistake?

      That’s not quite right. Half the distance is when the penalty yardage is more than half the distance to the GL. If you get a personal foul on the 24 it’s a 12 yard penalty. Only exception is defensive pass interference is always a spot penalty - in the endzone ball is spotted on the one yard line.

But nobody really cared in LA about the charges because San Diego is about a 2 hour drive down the 5 freeway. And a lot of the San Diego Chargers fan base is in LA anyway. The dodgers left Brooklyn in '56, and my grandpa still hates them. The saddest part is most of the old fanbase are just left without a team in the sport they love, sometimes for the rest of their lives.

    • @jrthmc29
      @jrthmc29 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Technically UNTRUE. Allow me to explain why this is false and you are incorrect.
      In 1995, owner Art Modell, who had purchased the Browns in 1961, announced plans to move the team to Baltimore. After threats of legal action from the city of Cleveland and fans, a compromise was reached in early 1996 that allowed Modell to establish the Baltimore Ravens as a new franchise while retaining the contracts of all Browns personnel. The Browns' intellectual property, including team name, logos, training facility, and history, were kept in trust and the franchise was regarded by the NFL as suspended for three seasons.
      So technically speaking the Browns front office, players and staff left and became a new franchise know as the Baltimore Ravens. Thereby leaving the "Cleveland Browns" in Cleavland.
      Also when the Browns resumed play in 1999 the club's roster was re-stocked via an expansion draft. Seeing as how the team still was based in Cleveland haviing truly never left the Browns were not technically considered to be an expansion franchise by the NFL.
      Now you know the whole truth rather than the false information you have believed for the past 22 years now. Go and tell all your friends 😁

    Regarding the supporting teams: many teams who move have trouble getting new fans in their new city, but they usually move to cities that didn’t have a team beforehand and the people there had supported another team. Many people support their college teams more than their nfl teams especially if they went or currently attend the college. People also support college teams based on location (I live in Ohio and I’m an Ohio state fan even though no one in my family went there). If people move, they don’t typically become fans of their new area’s nfl/college team and will stick to supporting the teams they always have.

    21:08 The whole penalization rule of saying "half the distance to the goal" is all determined based on what type of penalty it is, because they all grade differently in terms of yards and some giving free first downs. i.e. since the first penalty was for 15 yards the new spot would have been 15 yards further from the end of the play, but there was a second one that would've been for 15 yards but the ball was less than 30 yards from scoring a touch down so they took half the distance to the goal; this goes for any penalty that is longer that is half the distance to the goal.

    The Rams used to be in LA before moving to St Louis in the 90’s. So there was a fan base already in LA before the Rams moved back. But when a NFL team comes to town, most people choose to support that team, even if they already had a team maybe out of state or in another city. I live in Jacksonville, and before we got the Jaguars my family were Dolphins fans, but when we got our own team, we chose to support them.

    The penalty toward the end took 15 yards off, which put them close enough to the goal that adding another 15 yards would have put them into the endzone, and since they can't penalty themselves into a touchdown they were given "half the distance to the goal" instead of a full yardage.

    Penalties can vary in yardage, depending on the severity. Usually they're 5, 10 or 15 yards (the latter if it's a personal foul), but a defensive pass interference can be a 100y penalty at worst, because the ball is placed at the spot of the foul. When a player gets ejected, the team still plays with 11 men on the field, but the player is out. In case of Aaron Donald, that meant the Rams had to play without the arguably best defensive player in the league.
    There have been incidences of targeting (purposefully injuring an opposing player), this led to the Bountygate scandal that cost the Saints a few draft picks and got players and coaches suspended.
    In the US, a team usually has a large fan base in it's home town but also some fans in other places. This is especially the case if the team has been in a different city before. e.g. the Rams have been in L.A. previously until moving to St. Louis and now moving back. Many teams have resettled elsewhere and even re-branded. There are also expansion teams that have been added to the league later and that didn't exist previously. If people don't have a home team, they often pick a team they can identify with or that is playing attractive football. It's also very common to be fan of a player and cheer for his team as well, if he's not on yours. This especially happens when a player from your favorite college team gets drafted by an NFL team you usually wouldn't support.

    Our lesson for today: The “cleats” on American Football shoes are often about 3/4 inch long and about the same diameter at the base. (They’re conical with a truncated tip.) They are made of hard plastic and have a small steel cover on the end. They are also removable so the they can be replaced as they wear down or to change the cleat length to meet field conditions. They hurt like hell when a 280 pounder steps on your calf, or better yet, your hand.

    Wimbledon FC situation was similar to the Cleveland Browns move to Baltimore in 1996. Browns owner Art Modell decided to move the team to Baltimore(Ravens now). I think there was a disagreement about a new stadium and funding. Cleveland kept intellectual property of the Browns such as name, logo, history, etc. The NFL added a 31st team in Cleveland in 1999 and used an expansion draft to fill the roster for the new edition of the Browns.

    If a coach was ever caught intentionally strategizing harming another team's player, they would be banned from the league for at least a year, the team would forfeit draft picks, and HEAVY fines would be levied against everyone who was involved. The reason why the catch at 7:28 is controversial is because when you catch the ball you have to make a football move (running/ jumping/ stiff arm) to consider having possession as a receiver, if you catch and you're falling to the ground without making a football move with the ball you have to maintain possession of the football with two feet inbounds and you can't let the ball touch the ground before you catch it or as you catch, or in this case you have to keep firm control of the ball (no bobbling) if it touches the ground right after you catch it.

The thing is the rule on replays is if they don't have clear evidence that the call needs to be reversed they won't. It helps that the rams were contenders within the first few years. But it usually takes a few years to gain a following in a new city. The chargers also moved to LA around the same time and they really struggled for their first few years even though they weren’t playing too badly.

    As for having a thug do some damage to the other team...I'm pretty sure the league would come down on a team that did that, but also you're "starting" people who aren't as good. I think in American Football, it can ruin the cohesion between some units, because it is detrimental. But, in this case, the player that got DQed is the best player at his position in the entire league, so it is a huge thing if it happens early in the game(although in this case it was at the end of the game).

    About the teams moving: yeah it's complicated. I think before the team moves, the NFL has to do a lot of surveying of new cities, and find out which cities have enough people willing to support a new team. Also, it's a multi-year process, so people know the team is going to move a few years in advance. So, the new city has time to groom the fans up there. Also in some cases, a team relocates to a city it was before, ala the Rams(they were in LA before they moved to St. Louis). There are even some cases where a new franchise starts where a different team used to play, like in Houston. The Houston Oilers relocated to Nashville Tennessee, and renamed themselves the Tennessee Titans. Then a few years later Houston got added to the NFL again as the Texans. So, in cases like that, the city definitely wanted another team as many people had supported the team there before.
    But yeah, i'd reckon that when a team moves, most people are kinda pissed, and a lot of people stop supporting them. When the, now, LA Chargers moved to LA from San Diego, a LOT of people from San Diego were pissed and stopped supporting them. San Diego is a small market, but they had always been very loyal to their team, so they were rightfully pissed off when the team owner decided to move to a bigger market in LA for more exposure. Thankfully, it seems like that has backfired though, because now there are two teams in LA, and the Chargers are definitely 2nd wheel to the Rams... LA has historically been a pretty shitty sports town though, outside of the Lakers in the NBA, and arguably the Dodgers. The NFL just doesn't survive there very long.

    Teams get new fans mostly due to the fact that when a team is moved from one place to another it is usually due to financial issues such as seating, ticket prices and jersey sells. So they only naturally look for a larger market and therefore will inherently have a greater fan base potential. Which is the main factor in seating, tickets and jersey sells.

The Arizona Cardinals was the original team from St. Louis and were the St. Louis Cardinals. One the common reason a teams moves is due to the lack of support for a new stadium. So, another city looking for an NFL team can lure a team away by offering to build a new stadium. Lack of fan support and low attendance is also a reason a team will move.

    One problem with getting ejected is that teams are limited to a certain amount of players. Everyone is pretty much needed because most players do not play 90% of the plays each game. So if you lose one player it can affect not only your offence or defense, because you don't have another sub to give players breathers, also special teams.
    So essentially you can have a total of 9 players for the line of scrimmage on defense. Your playbook calls for 4 D- Linemen each play. Thats 2 full rotations plus if someone gets injured( which happens almost every game). So you lose 1 guy to injury then another player gets ejected your down to 7 men for 4 spots which isn't terrible. Except maybe one of those guys that isn't playing was on special teams. Now you have to have someone who may not know the position and play there.

Basically, the NFL's positions are 'injuries happen, but if you're actively trying to cause them, we WILL punish you'. Of course, as with my statement on steroids, there might be people who just play as dirty as they can get away with. (The defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, yes I Googled his name to spell it, _was_ definitely one of those guys, and old age MAY have mellowed him out but I'm doubtful.)

    @7:36 The reason why it was controversial was because you have to have full control over the ball when you hit the ground for it to be counted as a complete pass. If the ball is juggling in your hands or falls out of your hands when hit the ground, it is an incomplete pass. They was challenging the call, saying the ball was being juggled in his hands as he landed.

    the best thing about the clips where the guys are throwing punches at guys wearing helmets is that Crabtree and Green are both Wide Recievers! They need their hands to catch balls.

    23:35 The Rams actually were in Cleveland originally (1936-45), then went to LA (1946-94), then went to St Louis (1995-2015), then back to LA in 2016.

    Harbaugh constantly whines, he's the San Fran coach who threw a fit. To be fair tho, he may have had a point this time. If the ball is knocked loose after it hits the ground before you gained possession its incomplete, and the rules were much stricter back then about what qualified as a completed catch.

    It doesn't happen often, but there are times where franchises move. As mentioned by the Blokes with the whole Cleveland, Indy & Baltimore thing. The Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee and were the Tennessee Oilers for a couple of seasons before changing their name to the Titans. The Raiders originally played in Oakland. They moved to LA during the early 80s and then moved back to Oakland. Of course, they moved once again to Las Vegas last season. The Rams were originally located in LA. They moved to St. Louis to fill the void the Cardinals left when they took off for Arizona. The Rams were sharing a field with the MLB Angels which became inconvenient. St Louis built a brand new domed stadium (TWA it was called - can't remember the current name of it). After 20 seasons, they moved back once again to LA.
    St. Louis is a bit of a mystery to me. They are die-hard fans for the Cardinals (their MLB baseball team) and always seemed to support the Blues (their NHL hockey team) rather well. It's odd that two NFL franchises left there for better options. They had fan support as their attendance numbers were solid.
