How Mourinho Is TRANSFORMING Roma! | Explained

  • When Roma won the inaugural Europa Conference League in May 2022, not only did it mark the club’s first major silverware since 2008, but also Mourinho’s first trophy in five years. The longest trophy drought in the managers highly decorated career was over.
Before the showpiece against Feyenoord, he laid to rest his famous ‘special one’ nickname, labelling it “ancient history,” then signalled a new chapter in his football life following difficult spells at Man United and Tottenham in which his status as an elite coach was called into question for the first time. And now, he has his sights set on something bigger - Champions League qualification and, next season, a genuine push for the Serie A title, something only three managers have achieved in Roma’s history.
Loved by the fans in a way he never was at Old Trafford or Spurs, getting his way in key battles with difficult players, and showcasing an effective brand of counter-attacking football that has seen them rise into the top 4, it seems Mourinho has rediscovered his magic in the Eternal City. But how has he managed it? What has changed? And what is the secret to his recent success? On today’s EFD Explained, we’re heading to the Italian capital.

Players learned to play different roles and positions(worked out amazingly for Lahm but still...) and all but team itself didnt improve, and chrashed out of Europe embarassingly twice in a row. They were really good in 2015/16 as soon as there was less overthinking and more of playing players in their actual positions(only experimenting with Kimmich and Alaba), but it still was not it. The team was in the mud after Fergie left.
His last title winning team was a skeleton crew full of mediocre players, relying on the inconsistent and injury prone (if great) van Persie as well as iconic players who were past their peak (Evra, Ferdinand, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Vidic).
May I remind you of some players who started several games that season: Rafael, Phil Jones, Jonny Evans, Nani, Anderson, Cleverley, Smalling (who I know has come good now). He honestly deserves some respect for winning the league with that team but it's a godawful team to inherit after Fergie and his entire coaching team left (or maybe Moyes insisted they be fired? That was definitely a mistake either way)
Either way, maybe he could've had a better chance if he was given the job of the post-Fergie rebuild but... yeah I'm not sure. I love Mourinho for the record.

    • @gm2407
      @gm2407 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That was my opinion at the time. SAF had the players in solid habits and prep. DM unsettled that. Jose would likely have been able to get the right replacement for Scholes that summer and probably would have got an 80 point season that year. I also think that squad is underrated. Sure there were vetrans in the squad but they could have been replaced gradually. Also Mourinho works well with vetrans. Replacing Scholes was the first issue with that squad.

I liked the video, but I believe there are some things that are not true and others I disagree (it is a question of opinion):
1- Despite being worse in terms of xg conceded than with Van Gaal, Mourinho's United had a good defensive record. Specially if you take into account that the back 4 was composed by two old wingers playing as full backs (Valencia and Ashley Young), Phil Jones (bad defender) and Smalling (he is good for Serie A standarts and playing in a back 3, but not for a top Premier League team in a back 4).
2- Under Mourinho, Manchester United did their best campaign in Premier League after Alex Ferguson (81 points). Also, they won three titles. Only 6 years after they would be champion again.
3- During his second Chelsea spell, despite the disastrous third season, he won the Premier League and the League Cup. Chelsea's defensive record in the first and second season were very good.
4- It is not true that Mourinho is a low block manager. In the majority of games his teams plays with a mid or high block.
5- I agree his tenure at Spurs was bad. However, he took over in the middle of the season, when Tottenham was 14th in the Premier League. It is also worth mentioning they were recently thrashed 7-2 by Bayern.
6- Spurs played majority of the games with a mid block. Low block was used only exceptionally.
7- Mourinho never had a full season at Tottenham. He was sacked before the end of his second season at Spurs.

The entire thing about money spent on CBs is in such bad faith given how much City (Laporte alone cost almost as much as Lindelof and Bailly together while City already had Kompany & Otamemdi) or Liverpool who spent more on Van Dijk than Jose was allowed. Look at City's fullbacks (100m in 2017 alone while Jose was forced to convert Young + Valencia). Both City and Liverpool smashed the World Record fee for a goalkeeper in consecutive summers as well. The record had stood for 16 years before City signed Ederson.

The best result for Roma in the Champions League era was back in 2017/18, when the club had a historic comeback in Olimpico vs Barcelona. They almost did another one in the semi vs Liverpool. Still the greatest one after the 1983/84 final.
Not to mention, the next Champions League Final was held at Wembley, a good place for the Italian football to win a lot after Euro 2020 win. Santiago Bernabeu was the place where Italy won the World Cup in 1982 and Inter Milan's historic Treble with Jose Mourinho in 2010.

At this point if Boehly really wants to build a longer project he should approach the people who really made this club what it has been for the past 20 years. I will encourage him to hiring Jose Mourinho and having Lampard and John Terry as assistance managers. Those are Chelsea modern legend and for sure the dressing room will play for the badge. It makes sense to have people who know the in and out of this club in place for a longer project than a guy who has no historical attachment to Chelsea. Todd hire Jose as manager and Lampard and Terry as assistant. Lampard and Terry can help integrate those young players you are buying and Mourinho can mold them into premier league star.

Never gonna work. Chelsea owner is to mediocre for Jose Mourinho. That is why he choose the "yes sir" lampard to be CM.
The problem in Chelsea is the owner want to micromanaging everything without knowledge to run it. Every sport is different, bought a volleyball club and try manage it like football club not gonna work. When he bought player with 8 year contract i think he never considering the Bossman and never considering the power which player have in football at all.
When he came to the dressing room people said Perez or Laporta also doing it, even Abramovic also doing it, which is true but the different is how many year Perez or Laporta or Abramovic been living in football industry ? Is Todd have the same knowledge of football like Perez or Laporta ? This owner need to stay behind for 2 or 3 season and learn in and out about football like Newcastle owner doing right now before trying to micromanage everything.

Let's remember that Roma were in a downfall after monchi disaster, Mourinho managed to rebuild this team , but the challenge isn't complete yet, for completing this challenge he must take us back where we belong: champions League! There are only 2 ways: 4th in serie A (pretty hard for our start of the season) or winning the europa league, this will probably be his last year if he fails, he doesn't want to go, but the Friedkins yes, if he brings back champions League football to Roma, he will 99% remain. I have a personal theory about Tammy Abraham.
Chelsea has the 1st option to buy him this summer for 80 million. If they don't do the purchase, they lose the right starting next season.
My theory is that Mourinho plans to keep Tammy for the long run so he's telling him to sabotage this season so Chelsea would lose interest in him. Could that be true or was he a one season wonder scoring 27 last year?
