I bought 4 booster boxes of fakes intended to be real for prizes for homework completion at work a couple years ago. Got them on Ebay, fantastic price so I got more than 1 and it wasn't clear they were fake but then I didn't know to look till one of my students questioned the validity and told me how to tell... sure enough they wer duds. I still have them. Love to get rid of them but I refused to give them to the kids because I don't want to promote fraudulent trading but also can't bring myself to throw $200 of fakes out. Not sure what else to do with them.
Wow that’s a tough pill to swallow especially that you wanted to give back to your students, would make an awesome prize for sure to receive these cards!! Not sure what could be done with the fakes now. There are people out there who collect fake cards only, however it’s pretty much just cardboard to be played with maybe at this point. Maybe donate them?
@@CollectingWithGules yeah I would donate them but to where? I don't want to risk them being used to defraud others, that's why I won't give them to my students. They are popular. I started with 3 card packs because I would go broke with 10 card boosters with the speed they disappear. But was asked to look for 10 card packs and got burned bad. I did find legit booster boxes later (so as not to disappoint the kids) but it was a hard lesson. Ijust wish I cou,d find boxes of 3 xard packs os I didn't have to go to Dollar Tree or Dollarama every other week.
Biggest tip for spotting proxies is the cards sheen. MPG manufacturers cards via offset printing with specifically with OMET printing presses. These printing presses have custom rollers that produce very unique sheen texture and reflectivity when applied to card stock and it’s very consistent. Proxy card sheen always looks incredibly wrong, either way to glossy to point of it looking wet and or the texture is porous, which tells me it’s basic TCG card stock being fed into a laserjet printer. Printing resolution is another way to easily determine if it’s a proxy. Laser jet printers usually cap off around 300 dpi regardless whatever resolution they say they can print. The text on newer cards can easily identify the authenticity do to its lack of clarity. OMET offset printing presses for MPG specifically produce cards at 800DPI which is why smallest of text is always razor sharp.
oh one other thing... the background and the character are totally separated, its like a ridge tracing... example like the background first then the figure on top... the background and the character will never connect... that's how it's totally legit.

Im from Germany and i learned "Medientechnologe" basically "Printer"😅(its actually a 3 year learning process) I buy 1-2 boosters here and there, always at big trustworthy stores.... i dont mind how rare they are, i just like the artwork on holos, reverse holos etc. Im surprised how bad the printing, centering and cutting is on some of the real ones.....i pulled a Houndoom Holo from a shield and sword booster (absolutely gorgeous artwork and holo effect) but the edges are cut bad and the centering is like salt to my "Printer" eyes lol
Hey thanks for watching. I would say 99.9% of the rainbow rare cards need to have texture on them. If it’s smooth and super shiny, it’s probably fake unfortunately. 😥
Dang I have a few vintage holographic cards that seem like they pass all the tests. Except that they feel a bit too stiff. They feel a bit more thick but I’m just not sure lol
It is possible that fonts differed on batches of cards that were printed back then. That being said, if it passed the light test, it’s most likely a real card.
@@hidection5362 does the back of the card have Pokémon on it or Pocket Monsters? If you’d like, send me a pic of the card on my IG page @collectingwithgules

Thanks bud, appreciate that! I realized after I filmed that video what they were lol. It brought me back to being a kid when I would ask my parents for a few quarters to buy them in the vending machines lol
Mine has what appears to have a "sticker" on top of the charizard artwork, however it passed this guys' test, the light test & all. Is this what you are referring to when you said disco ball? it's a holographic card.
Hey bud thanks for watching and subscribing as well. Unfortunately at the moment I do not have that type of video. I am looking into, however it’s pretty much the same signs when it comes to sealed products. Look at the wrapping of the plastic wrap. The ink and font on the booster box will be very different when it comes to colour and type. I’ve seen fakes and it’s quite obvious
Thanks for the info. Wish it had been up when I got caught up in buying fakes unknowingly a couple years ago. I will share this video to anyone in need.
Thanks so much for the support!! Really appreciated. Hopefully I can help as many people possible to not buy fakes as this market for fakes keeps rising as we go on into the hobby
@@CollectingWithGules just curious generally are the 3 card Dollarama or Dollar Tree store packs legit? I have been buying them for prices for my students bur ow I'm second guessing myself.
