I'm starting a small reef tank, and these quick 5 minute videos help a lot! it's nice to just watch something that's just quick and to the point. No advertising or anything, just raw knowledge.
I understand you about equipment failure and agree. However, I’ve had a lot of tanks and a lot of heaters and I actually only had one heater fail in almost 30 years or so of active aquarium keeping. It failed because I dropped and broke the glass case. My fault. I stopped using the glass ones after that. On top of that I totally disagree with you about the failure and replacing of the controller. What you’re showing there is an InkBird. I have a lot of InkBird controllers doing a lot of different things and I have never had a InkBird controller fail. InkBird is my go to for a lot of controller equipment as a result. I’ve been using them for 15 maybe 20 years...?
i dont mean to be offtopic but does anybody know a trick to get back into an instagram account..? I stupidly forgot my password. I would love any assistance you can give me
@Jeremias Cristian Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
The ok ne heater I cant reccomend at all are the colbalt neotherms. They have the highest fail rate I've ever seen with a heater, to the point where our store has had to stop stocking then due to the complaints. Besides that, i always reccomend a temp controller. Those brs heaters look pretty nifty too, can't believe no one thought about a audible alert, that seems so obvious now that I think about it.
An audio alert doesn't stop the malfunction nor does it help when you are gone at work. It needs a auto shut off redundancy circut like Finnex does so that if it fails on. The controller senses the heat spike and kills the power to it.
I live in the caribean and i dont use heater i have a constant 80-82 except in summer that can go up to 90-95 and still dont use chillers and my corals do awesome and are colorful
What about people in areas that lose power a lot are there systems with battery backup. A reef aquarium has been a dream but I'm not sure I can be successful here
Hey John, We haven't tested the AquaEL heater, so I'm afraid that we can't compare. They certainly do look similar, so it's possible that they're produced by the same manufacturing facility.
Bulk Reef Supply thanks for your answer. changing the subject. I have big a problem. I have Ick and parasites in my DT,I tried to Qt them but was too stressful for the fish so they still in there and I’m medicating with reef safe medication I don’t have corals just invertebrates. I got a 135 gallon I’m cycling it and my idea was transfer my life stock to the new tank but after this circumstance what I can do? What is safe to transfer and what no? Are my invertebrates carrying ick eggs? If so what I can do??? My blue tang still with white/ bumpy skin today is my 3 rd of medicating her in how long I should see results? I don’t want to wait so long and waist time in something that is no working but I don’t want to rush it either 🤦🏼♀️
It really depends on the heater controller at hand. Many heaters have a built-in thermostat, so you could pair those types of heaters with an external controller, like the InkBird, for backup protection from overheating.
Each manufacturer and heater type (glass vs titanium vs plastic) have different ratings. Of course, the ambient room temperature plays a role too. If you're talking about the BRS heaters, we suggest a max tank volume of 40 gallons, 75 gallons, 100 gallons, and 200 gallons for our 100w, 200w, 300w, and 600w heating elements, respectively.
My brand new heater failed in under a year (8 months) and cooked all my inverts in my DT. Thankfully no fish were in there as they are in QT. Every 6 months I will be replacing the heaters on both tanks.
Bulk Reef Supply It wes for sure a reminder anything can happen. I had no idea you guys made your own heaters. For sure next time I will be going with BRS! Loving this new video series!! Keep up the great work!
just bought one of those heater controllers they dont work very well. unless you calibrate it ever 3-5 days had it for over 2 months nothing but problems keeps cooking my tank.

I've got that same cobalt aquatics neo therm in a biocube and it's the best heater I've used on the tank.
Love these videos great job

They are in sales so...
I have 3 heaters for my RSR250. 2 online at all times, one on standby. In my basement, temps can drop like a rock so no chances taken.
great informative videos.
is a flow pump necessary with a side plumbed sump and pump return?

@Jeremias Cristian it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thanks so much you really help me out !
@Atlas Cayden Happy to help xD

Is this aquael plastic ultra heater as good as the cobalt neo therm?
Hey John,
We haven't tested the AquaEL heater, so I'm afraid that we can't compare. They certainly do look similar, so it's possible that they're produced by the same manufacturing facility.
If I have a heater and a probe, should they be next to each other or far apart?
We usually put them relatively close together; usually in the same sump chamber.
I have a 135 gallons I want to putt the heater in the sump which is 55 gallons how I should pick the heater W ? By the size of the tank? Or sump?
You'll want to size a heater based on total water volume

do you think 100 watts is good enough for a 15 gallon or should i go for the 300 watt to leave me some headroom ?
Unless you have abnormally cold ambient room temperature, a 100w heater will do the trick for a 15 gallon system.
If they already do ignore my comment. But why don’t manufacturers add in a relay for over temp protection?

is there a way for me to use the titanium heater element by itself (without the bulky heater regulator)
If the heating element has power, it's on, so you'll need some way of turning it on/off based on the tank temperature.
Do you have an ETA on when your BRS Titanium Heater Elements are going to be in stock? :)
We do still have some 600w, but would expect to see more in the month of December.
What should be the heater capacity in watt per gallon? Please help

Am i the only one who thinks its a smart idea to buy undersized heaters so they dont switch on and off as often and thereby increase in lifespan?
Hmmmmmm good question...... I'm not sure if an undersized heater is gonna be able to get the right temperature tho
My thermostat threw an 'HL' code. I thought I reset it. It didn't reset. The temp continued to climb. 58 fish dead this morning.
OOF

Yikes! Glad to hear that the fish weren't harmed!

inexpensive? it's the most expensive thing going in my tank. 3 gal pico
