Every time I feel a pang of sadness or of guilt, I come to this channel. It has elevated my mood on countless occasions. Thank you to the entire team that are touching innumerable lives and changing them for the better.
Then you must be dumb asf 😂😂u do realize Alain speaks a lot of nonsense... If you have a problem with the comment dm instagram @kenyan.mugo I tell you why
Sounds nice but I really don't believe you could have a serious relationship with just anyone. Why not go and pick a random stranger in the street to love then? I think compatibility is both a prerequisite and the achievement of a relationship. You better not start a relationship with literally anyone but someone with whom it'll be easier (than with some others) to achieve compatibility. And compatibility is not even an all or nothing issue but a continuum. The higher it is in the beginning, probably the better (easier it will be to increase it) the product.

I consider The School of Life videos and materials my true education..I learned with you what matters in life, what is mature love, a proper prespective on history and politics, and the value of an uneventful day..Bless you for everything you did and do
This is so true. I have looked to and relied on this channel for a comprehensive guidance not just for my life, but my thoughts, emotions and the perception of my own reality. I am grateful to this for not feeling as lost as I would feel otherwise.
Agreed! But this essential distillation should be the beginning, not the end. Until a student has read the 5 million words behind these ideas, they may carry the Credos around in their mental pockets, ready to roll out at a moment's notice, but never fully understand them, their arguments, or applications. Part of what's wrong with our current education system is that we spend far too much time and effort simplifying things that shouldn't be simplified in the name of expedience. Some things (like education) just cannot be simplified without tremendous loss. Education is not about teaching facts, it's about building intellectual skills powerful enough to navigate this world in a productive manner beneficial to both the individual and his or her world. I love the work of Alain De Botton (especially on social anxiety) and would make a bunch of his work required reading if it were up to me. But we live in a corporately driven consumer society that espouses individualism over all else (for a reason one can only fully comprehend through the study of the arts) and until the people who study the arts can eradicate the notion that education = job, we're stuck with sound bites and prayers. You are miserable not just because your world doesn't revolve around you, but because you believe it should and continue to follow the prescription for success and happiness of those who have no intention of allowing you to actually obtain them because they would both come at a cost to the people in control.
Hamza Saleem the value of an uneventful day .. 3:25-3:40 and importance of mindfulness to ‘keep the ordinary coming’ ;| even if we have been thankfully been provided alternative explanations to normalcy throughout the video.
There has to be some overlapping common interests so that you at least have the notion of a common direction. But in the end growing together through communal interests is what synthesizes the compatibility. At least what understand from it
Christine, weirdly enough I've been coming across your comments on videos I've been watching...So many times that I told my friend about it. It's such lovely happenstance esp because we share a name. :-)
Of this video, the thing that I remember the most is that repetition is the way to live by these concept. Every morning just after I woke up and every night before I go to bed, I read 2 little textes to remember what is important in my life.
It's good that it helped you but believe this. You are not an idiot. You are not insane. You can unlock potential by believing in yourself. By believing you are as equipped as most people to get what you want from life. Crack on. Make some decisions, small ones at first, do them. Make bigger decisions, and so on.
"We don't count one bit in the grander scheme. That should be a liberation." I love this so much. I've tried to convey this sentiment to several people... for some reason, many find it quite frightening to think that, nothing actually matters. I realized when I was 20 that I'm a nihilist, and was maybe like 20 and 1/2 when I realized what a relief that is. That nothing matters. That I could fuck up monumentally, more than anyone had ever fucked up before in the world, and it wouldn't even matter at all. 100 years from now, no one will even know my name. I'm grateful for that. Still not sure how that terrifies people...
This channel has deeply helped me in ways unimaginable. Thank you for reminding us that we are just mere human beings in such a weird yet beautiful world 🌟
Thanks for putting this summary together. You have seen me through the worst time of my life, getting divorced, and you are still helping me to navigate my post divorce life. Your channel saved me from insane thoughts and anxiety on many occasions. To begin with, you helped me to feel less alone since you made me realise that my issues and my story are not unique. At the same time you helped me to understand my weaknesses and to work on them while remaining kind to myself. The concept of good enough in certain situations has prevented me from being too hard on myself, but still enabled me to extract the lessons. You also helped me to understand the importance of being single for an extended period of time to give myself a chance at feeling whole while I am alone (not lonely!). I now realize that this is a key component to a healthy future relationship. Lastly, you helped me to differentiate between people who are worthy of my love, energy and effort and people who are not. I have become more selective and that has been so empowering for me. I am a lot closer now and more appreciative of the people in my life that count. And I am sure I am not alone in any of this. I am sure your channel has helped countless people in countless ways. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you!
I don't know about you but, for me, learning to be okay with being alone (not lonely), and not settling has made it impossible to find someone to have a long-term relationship with.
The school of life has always been a huge comfort whenever I was feeling down. The coincidence of seeing in my newsfeed a portion of the london real video featuring Alain de Botton was so timely, that after watching the whole version, I had to revisit your channel and find this. Thank you so much for all the wisdom you are sharing with us. A timely reminder in trying times.
In all things reflect, analyse, consider, reject emotions, base life decisions on principles of right and wrong. Your school is exceptional in its depth of examination. Thank you.
I can't describe how thankful I am to the school of life.. I owe you a lot.. If I had enough money I would immediately donate it to you.. Thank you so much for your amazing work!!
I think the rules that will really stick with me are: 'we are all imperfect' and 'transcend yourself' because it reassures us that if we trip or fall in life, no one is looking and reminds us that we will mess up but that's okay☺
I've been subscribed to this channel for 4 years and I cannot describe how much it has helped me!!! I was already gaining precious knowledge when I started listening to the videos and then when I did therapy that knowledge was definitely expanded!!! Now I can see so many things under a different perspective regarding me and other people and this makes me feel soooooooo bliss!!!! It has been a very encouraging, engaging and enlightening experience!!! So thank you sooooooo much!!! I may not have mastered the 8 teachings of the schools of life, but I definitely understand them and I definitely try my best to apply them all the time!!! So thank you!!! GRATIDÃO!!! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Cheerful despair! Fake it till you feel it. I like to wear a serene expression on my face and I've come to really feel it, as walking, especially in nature, lifts my depression
The first rule of this game is that it is not a game. Everyone must play. You must love us. You must go on living. Be yourself, but play a consistent and acceptable role. Control yourself and be natural. Try to be sincere. ~ Alan Watts, from "The Book"
In times like these, I always watch videos from your channel. It gives me a sense of calmness, peace, and resilience when I watch your videos. Thank you for continuouly uplifting us with the great lessons you impart ♥️
The calming voice of this man talks and talks... Then in the end the girl's voice always so abruptly comes in, manages to get me each time :D Awesome video.
I love this channel! It's a very good source of self-assurance and revelation, thank you to everyone who is responsible for creating this great channela and all those who contributed to its growth.
I love all of the rules but "know your insanity" particularly made me smile. I have indeed been finding beauty in the more _obscure_ parts of people. The ones they try to hide to fit the mold. It's marvellous.
Perfect timing. Staying with my roommate during this COVID-19 period has driven me mad, real mad, for the very first time in many years. Up until now, I used to always seem myself a "nice person," which tends to be more like a "perfectly kind person" in my ideal. Because of this perfectionism, I always suppressed my anger. By not expressing or even allowing myself to experience anger, it manifested itself in the form of grief. Up untill now, I had never been angry at the virus, the government, or people around me. I was just so sad. But this doesn't have to be the case anymore. If I'm angry at someone, I'm going to acknowledge that anger. I will embrace my temper, my scornful words, and my nasty tone. This is what I really feel in the moment. I am going to honour my feelings. And yes, I have never felt as humane as I am feeling now.
I want to just say thank you to everyone who puts time into these videos. You guys help me through so much everytime I see another one. Like it says it the video I'll always need to remind myself and watch regularly but every video I feel closer to being the person I want to become. I appreciate every moment and thought put into these beautiful films. 💛💛
To be a “better” person I was yesterday. Better = less hubris in my self-awareness. Just love AdB philosophy. Goodness. Ruthless Authentic Accountability. Love it! And Thank you. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
We are perfect in our imperfections. They make us unique and give us an advantage over others that only you have. Learn to embrace your imperfections so that they work for you and not against you.

this helped me immensely. personally #4 resonated with me so much. the crippling fear of being perceived as an idiot has stopped me from doing projects that i am passionate about, stopped me from talking to people i think are cool, it basically put me in this suffocating box of my own judgements that any decision i make had to be idiot-proof. i have made a conscious decision that i will start embracing it. the first step of which, is posting this comment when otherwise i wouldnt really comment what i am thinking in the fear of being perceived as a pretentious idiot. so yeah. i am pretty dumb and it is okay.
Once again, School of Life, you have nailed it‼️ Brilliant and RIGHT ON‼️ Outstandingly said‼️ I did the cheerful melancholy today❗️ And sometimes, not so cheerful melancholy. Kind of got up on the wrong side of the bed, and continued my entire day on that track. However, it was a big plus for me and my consciousness, that I am now aware of accepting myself in this condition, instead of wishing it away or blaming myself for putting friends, coworkers through my trials and tribulations. Now at home, 10 PM getting ready for bed and having just listened to Tara Brach, another spiritual teacher, I say to myself, it really wasn't that bad. You didn't yell at anyone..... I was aware all day that I should be careful with others because I could feel the vulnerability of being in that position, and I was uncomfortable but sane. Come on in melancholy and park for a day, and let's see if I can keep calm and loving to myself, and others. AND GUESS WHAT, I mostly did. It's just me and my mind which constantly is putting me down, and that's the main party to whom I need to observe and care for, it's all right little darling, I will be there for you, (MYSELF)❗️☮️☯️💟
People refrain from talking about their flaws and tragedies of life. Alain de Botton has been like a group therapy kind of thing for me. Not only the School of Life but each one of his talks and ideas has been a blessing. I read the comments and assure myself I’m not alone.
If British long suffering got frisky with Buddhist philosophy...I suspect their baby would be something like this gem. There are many people in my life that I think will benefit from this, so I have sent it off to all of them! Thank you for your work to help us all make life a little more livable.

I can't tell with proper words how much The School of Life has helped me in the most everyday problems of my life but I would love to share this amazing content to many others to help them, the problem here is that they don't speak English and I'd appreciate a lot to The School of Life if they can put Spanish captions so in that way so many people could get the opportunity to understand such helpful and wonderful content. Thanks again.
What I call the "Paradox of School of Life" is that the people who need this advice the most are the ones least likely to watch this and receive it. The channel keeps talking about humility and accepting that you are not that great, when in reality most viewers need the opposite (a self-confidence boost.) You cannot bring people down to earth when they already have the humility to watch TSoL.
Happiness and confidence are slightly deceptive; if you were to repeat what Tsol says you would want to be taken seriously, and would be anxious to hear what others think about the ideas you bring up. A confidence boost to do something you dread, has as many answers; "but a few questions", "Why don't you go and ask the most beautiful girl you know on a date?"
Teaching humility isn't just about bringing people down to earth, it's also about convincing the people on earth that earth isn't such a bad place to be. Someone who thinks they're perfect and someone who despairs at the fact that they're not, both suffer from the same problem.
I think you need to dig deeper. Humility, and understanding that indeed, all humans are imperfect, and in a very real, societal as well as cosmic sense, not of it really matters, is critical. However, so is the flipside: the kindness, forgiveness & grace that we should extend to not only others, but ourselves as well. Acceptance is the key to confidence. I think you may view 'confidence' and 'self-esteem' as derivatives of comparison; you're using societal measuring sticks to judge whether or not you should feel good about yourself. This is one way to go about it. I think the School of Life though, encourages us to think of it differently; to treat everyone, ourselves and others, essentially the same. To understand that our yearning for these things is simultaneously understandable as well as foolish. To let go. And to be at peace with that. I think that's where true love (self-love as well as love for others & the world) comes from. Do I think everyone can receive this type of information and take it, on balance, as truth, immediately? no, of course not. But the funny thing is, I couldn't have, even a few short years ago. That doesn't mean these people you talk about who need a self-confidence boost will always need it, or those who could stand to bear some humbling won't understand this later on. Again, hoping for that might be hoping for life to be what you think it should be, rather than as it is. Let things take their course.
@@sebastianelytron8450 To someone who thinks they are perfect: "accept that you are NOT perfect" To someone who feels bad because they are not perfect: "ACCEPT that you are not perfect" If you let perfection into your life it will become the source of all your troubles. Stop thinking you must be perfect. How are you supposed to ever be confident when your standards are so impossibly high that you will never reach them without deluding yourself? People don't need a confidence boost from a youtube video, they need to learn to stop relying on youtube videos for confidence boosts.

Thanks Salma. We desperately need this in Arabic. I submitted Arabic subtitles long ago for another great video (a country you can be proud of) but it never got published. I think many are willing to do this for free if they only let them.
Hard to put into words just how much this channel has helped me. May we all find encouragement in discovering how to best manage this thing called life.
I read many self help books and saw 4 years everyday min 3H self Help content. It was jus addiction I now understand. The rush of dopamine when watching and thinking the result it’s rewarding. But Starting any task there’s lot of frictions, mistakes, frustration & self help just teaches Always Be Positive and Hustle. So in that mentality, there’s no stopping and no resting and no introspecting on the negative thought. So lots of ideas or introspection of own self is lost and we just think inside a box what the industry lays. The Toxic of Self Help By James Jani Video portraits it very well and Now School of Thought’s Video I am Seeing and it gives lots of Good thinking outside the box what self help industry portraits. Journal, Meditation is very beneficial that is also I got when seeing those videos but it’s an addiction trap and it doesn’t teach about emotions and most time say ignore them that’s bad and I experience that. It is beneficial for short term but in long term lots of things accumulates and attacks together. And lastly asI said earlier, there’s always a rush to see new videos, read new books to improve but underline words are same and work is zero but we are thinking we achieved something.
After experiencing anxiety and panic attacks and overthinking for years, I'm proudly to say I understood most of the rules, except love. It hasn't yet come to me.
The funny thing is, we become professional overthinkers, without even having experiences to prove those thoughts. We think we know, because we have feelings and those tend to act as a morning fog, dissipating rather quickly.
Dear God, this is wonderful! I know some people think of The School of Life as warmed-over pop psychology, but there are some real nuggets of wisdom in every video. I find the "lessons" useful and try to incorporate the ideas into my daily life. I cannot say I have become wiser (probably still the talkative idiot I always have been) but I am getting a little more tolerant of other people's insanities as well as my own. Thanks for being there, School of Life!
Knowing I am an idiot and so is everyone else is liberating. The times I have laughed the hardest have been at myself and the idiotic things I have done.
Thanks for posting this. It's nice to know that all your videos can be summarized this way, because I wouldn't want to watch the same kind of thing over and over again. You seem to believe in accepting imperfections and even praising them instead of seeing the imperfections as a matter of perspective and that as works in progress, they're what (can) make us great. But your apparent tolerance for our problems and their continued existence shows that The School of Life hasn't truly refined its collective perspective and seen that irresponsibility is the source of all the world's problems and tolerance for irresponsibility is why we haven't eradicated it. You're part of the problem. You're so nice that you never get to the point for fear it would alienate the many people watching your channel that don't want to do what works for them and makes them happy. They don't want to deal with the consequences of their actions and actually do better. They want to hear you tell them it's okay and that as long as they don't try too hard and accept their imperfections that they'll be able to carry through, all the while avoiding the reality that despite whatever way you want to spin it, almost everyone by their indifference, complacency, and acceptance of problems allow themselves to be taken advantage of on a daily basis just so they can earn an underwhelming living, all the while the planet is being destroyed and we've already passed the point of no return. The School of Life might as well be called The School of Death, because if people really counted on this channel for life advice, they'd just be happier versions of the absolute morons that have been grumbling uselessly about not getting their ways. And being happy being wrong is like planting and watering flowers before a nuclear apocalypse. Unsubscribed, you schmucks.
The Credo of the School of Life (1) Accept imperfection (2) Friendship (3) Know your insanity (4) Accept your idiocy (5) Good enough (6) Beyond romanticism (7) Cheerful despair (8) Transcend yourself
Disagree with 5 pretty fundamentally. Telling yourself you're good enough is only really a prescription when you are in the depths of vicious self criticism. Good enough doesn't really inspire an endeavour to improve. 'doing my best' is a term off the top of my head that although is relatively soothing and blunts despair, also holds yourself to an honest and intrinsic yardstick. Although that being said, I am an idiot. 😉
This "good enough" thing can be interpreted in many ways. It basically means that there is nothing wrong with you and, from there, you can move forward: improve yourself not because you are flawed, but because you want to grow and learn.
@@XaviOvf Yes, but sometimes there IS something wrong and you should recognize it and change it - both for you and for those around you - not accept it and feeling as if what you're like is entirely uncontrollable and set in stone. Being at peace with who you are is only beneficial if you're an anxiety-ridden overthinker. Unfortunately, most people who are at peace with who they are aren't the ones that should be.
Petition for making this the front video on the main channel page. It is most likely not needed and has already been decided by the team behind this channel but i think it sums up very well the theme of this channel.

Thank you School of Life and thank you Alain de Bouton! for the calm and resolute kind leading towards much more sain inner-life for each and every one!
These so-called rules all focus on the “negative” aspects of the human psyche. It’s almost as if it’s trying say what Buddhism has said for eons. All life is suffering. It’s what we do to transcend suffering that makes life meaningful. Or words to that effect.
One of those things we seem to only get when we get old. We may not be able to put it into these words, but we start to act on this in our 60’s. Would be so cool to have people embrace this when teens.
Summary:
1. We are imperfect,
2. (True) Friendship,
3. Know your Insanity,
4. Accept your idiocy,
5. Good Enough,
6. Beyond Romanticism,
7. Cheerful despair,
8. Transcend yourself.

There has to be some overlapping common interests so that you at least have the notion of a common direction. But in the end growing together through communal interests is what synthesizes the compatibility. At least what understand from it

It's good that it helped you but believe this. You are not an idiot. You are not insane. You can unlock potential by believing in yourself. By believing you are as equipped as most people to get what you want from life. Crack on. Make some decisions, small ones at first, do them. Make bigger decisions, and so on.

I love this so much.

In loneliest nights of self doubts and painful silence, I come to this channel to talk to even if am mostly listening
This is why i love these guys ,the clarity that brings after listening you is impeccable.

And yes, I have never felt as humane as I am feeling now.

this helped me immensely. personally #4 resonated with me so much. the crippling fear of being perceived as an idiot has stopped me from doing projects that i am passionate about, stopped me from talking to people i think are cool, it basically put me in this suffocating box of my own judgements that any decision i make had to be idiot-proof. i have made a conscious decision that i will start embracing it. the first step of which, is posting this comment when otherwise i wouldnt really comment what i am thinking in the fear of being perceived as a pretentious idiot. so yeah. i am pretty dumb and it is okay.
Great list, particularly accepting idiocy. Embracing it is important to learn, grow and develop. As Socrates said "I know that I know nothing"

@@joez6235 I fail to see how the same piece of advice could apply to two people with extremely different outlooks on life??
@@sebastianelytron8450 To someone who thinks they are perfect: "accept that you are NOT perfect"
To someone who feels bad because they are not perfect: "ACCEPT that you are not perfect"
If you let perfection into your life it will become the source of all your troubles. Stop thinking you must be perfect. How are you supposed to ever be confident when your standards are so impossibly high that you will never reach them without deluding yourself?
People don't need a confidence boost from a youtube video, they need to learn to stop relying on youtube videos for confidence boosts.
I simply love the voice of this man you (School of Life) uses in your videos...

Wise words, thank you 🙏
After experiencing anxiety and panic attacks and overthinking for years, I'm proudly to say I understood most of the rules, except love.

I just finished reading the School of Life book The Great Thinkers (loved it!), and throughout I heard it, in my mind, in this voice.

2. (1:03) Friendship,
3. (1:45) Know your Insanity,
4. (2:31) Accept your idiocy,
5. (3:13) Good Enough,
6. (3:42) Beyond Romanticism,
7.(4:28) Cheerful despair,
8. (5:29) Transcend yourself..
The Credo of the School of Life
(1) Accept imperfection
(2) Friendship
(3) Know your insanity
(4) Accept your idiocy
(5) Good enough
(6) Beyond romanticism
(7) Cheerful despair
(8) Transcend yourself
These videos make me feel normal and grounded. I love it.
This is the comment I've been looking for.
It is basically.. nobody is good enough... everyone is broken, healing, imperfect and an idiot.
@@user-qb4id8zn3h I couldn't have said it better. 👍
“Ordinary is not a name for failure”
Thank you thank you thank you
I love how the whole point of the video was, that I should subscribe to your channel😂😂😂
This is why School of Life is my favourite channel. Thanks for your videos.
1:38 - "Slower to judge, and quicker to understand." Too bad most of the world doesn't do that.
Petition for making this the front video on the main channel page. It is most likely not needed and has already been decided by the team behind this channel but i think it sums up very well the theme of this channel.
Can you do a video on painful memories? I constantly have flash backs to dumb things I’ve done or said or mistakes I’ve made and they can feel physically paralysing
One of their videos with the seemingly harsh title 'don't worry, no one cares', might touch this topic a little
Oh School of Life what a WONDERFUL gift you are to us!!!
The way of the future!
This channel is a beacon in every sense to human kind
I’d replace the “idiot” part with an acceptance that we are all ignorant about something. Or just add it in.
True
The idiot part is the best bit
One of those things we seem to only get when we get old. We may not be able to put it into these words, but we start to act on this in our 60’s. Would be so cool to have people embrace this when teens.
