IKR? I like the length of this one. Euro 900 was of a regular size I think. Here you can see how far from the handlebars he sits and there is still a place for a Chinese family out there.

I’m not a motorcycle guy, but the engineering on 80s Japanese bikes is ridiculously cool, especially this.
Despite all the complexities, there's something neat about the transfer case that makes me want it. The amount of engineering that went into make it work is pretty impressive. The handling and smoothness seems like a treat as well.
Edit before someone corrects me: Not a transfer case since no power going to the front wheel. It's really like a second, two speed transmission, so I suppose it might be considered a subtransmisson? Or it could be like bolt-on overdrive, but it's hard to say without knowing what's inside it.

Yeah it's. Not really a transfer case is it. It's more of a gearvendors bolt on overdrive. What it is for sure though, is pretty god damn cool.

Man this is one odd motorcycle. The chain transfer to the shaft drive is one of the strangest things I’ve seen, but it’s Honda - they’ve made even stranger things.

I bought my cb900c from some undeserving git who couldn't figure out that the main fuse was broken. I practically stole the thing for $600

I'm so happy you reviewed this! This was the first motorcycle I owned before it got totalled. It came with the old dealer-added Vetter half-fairing and people at gas stations would ask me if it was a Goldwing.
The rear end actually came from the GL1100 from the Ohio Honda Marysville plant.

They made this bike a 1000cc fine version for 1983 with some of the same styling cues as a V 65 magna. And yes it makes a great long instance cruiser and town bike.
You know how sometimes you want to plug something into a computer, but it doesn't have the right port, so you dig through "the box" of cables and stuff and end up putting like 5 adapters together just to make it work? That's this bike.
I see you also know the forbidden ways of the USB-to-DC37 foot-long row of adapters.
I've done that, but for electricals - living on the edge to the extreme, by connecting three different surge protectors just to play Street Fighter with my friends. It felt awesome, but I know how dangerous that is.

Ehhhhh I kiiiinda disagree a little bit. I mean no doubt it’s a good looking bike, but when you look at the sport bikes with the aerodynamic bodies there’s just something about them.

Just got one of these last week. It's as willing to flick over even with the stock handlebars. Mr. Regular's riding impressions with the Hi-Lo are exactly the same as mine. For the money, these bikes are so fun and are built like a brick shithouse.
This is my exact bike, same colors and everything. It's been great, and very reliable. 80,000 kilometers and going strong
In '83, Honda made this bike into the CB1100F. It was the fastest bike made that year, and they only made it that year. It was a regular chain drive. They're pretty rare, and people who have them know what they've got. That was probably the ultimate of this kind of bike.
I had a friend years ago who had one of these. He called me after he got it and was like "do you wanna see the weirdest thing ever?" I went over on my sportster and he showed me the weird setup here and we just couldn't figure out WHY they did it. But you're right, it was a parts bin bike. They wanted that motor on a shaft drive, and they had to do it with whatever was laying around. Reminds me of that scene on Appollo 13 where they were trying to figure out how to make a filter with whatever was on the ship.
The drivetrain sounds like typical Honda - answering a question no one asked.
Only Honda could have made something like that work and manufactured it in any kind of numbers. Can imagine MotoGuzi or Harley Davidson trying that? The things would be lucky to start in the showroom. You are right that it is a solution to a problem that existed nowhere outside of Honda's minds. You have to be amazed at the engineering and manufacturing prowess it took to manufacture that bike to such a consistently high quality. It is like some circus acrobat doing a triple Lindy or something. Sure it is pointless but my God how did they do it?
I've owned one of these for a few years now, and it sounds like you're kinda missing the potential of the hi-lo. Around 5.5k rpm the engine gets much buzzier and twitchier, and depending on how you're riding it can be really useful to flip around that depending on if you want more power or smooth comfort in the moment. You basically have a ton of granular control over what rpm you want for your current speed. For example, when I do spirited riding I'm usually flipping the hi-lo back and forward to keep my rpm's between 7-9k where the engine has the most power, in many situations there's no need to do a full shift and climb back up again. When you get used to it and don't need to look down anymore it's really rad.
Oh, i thought that was just my bike. I have a 1980, and the 5.5k rpm “twitch” is def where I use the the hi-lo most frequently. :)
I test rode one of these when I was riding a Honda Magna but I couldn't sell the Magna in time to get the cash for the CB900. This is a much better bike, quality-wise, than my Magna which was the most expensive bike I ever had to keep running. The Magna's V4 engine kept having major mechanical problems in spite of my babying it and giving it obsessive maintenance. If I ever get a chance to get another CB900, I will jump on it.

@@will7its It was expensive because it kept dying on the roadside and had to be towed to a professional mechanic who could resurrect it after doing extensive surgery and parts replacements. I've owned many Honda motorcycles and all of them were good except this one. Once I got it running well, I sold it before it self-destructed again. It was a money pit on two wheels. Worst motorcycle ever!!!!
Believe it or not, the most reliable motorcycles I've owned were Honda Shadow's and Harley Sportster's. Minimal maintenance and maximum smiles per mile.

I owned one of these bikes for years and it is a smooth power beast. Great suspension, sound, and riding position. One of my all time favorite bikes and I have owned a lot of bikes.

I like the look of this one. Used to have GPZ 750 with that upper half windshield on a square headlight. I still have GPZ 500 which is 1/2 of GPZ 900 engine. I think KZ1000 had a reputation of not as reliable as Honda. Still way better than that heavy XS1100 without a single modern part inside.

Yeah but im thinking he is saying like the 80s were the last you could get that look and setup (carbs aircool etc) so him saying that those were the last, is incorrect. They made the 1200 bandits which were air cooled usually with an oil coller and still pretty quick until like 07 then had to convert to FI. Plus companies make retro sport and standard bikes today, so we can indeed still get bikes that look like these ie z900rs and w800
This was my first bike and I still have it. Mine was even the same color when I got it. I use the transfer case like an overdrive, and it makes a big difference when you’re pushing 80+ down the interstate. It’s so freaking smooth, but one thing you’ll notice when you ride one is that when you get on the throttle the ass end will actually lift a little bit. You expect it to squat, but it doesn’t. It’s a weird feeling.
shaft jacking. Lots of shaft bikes experience this. I've been lucky with my Vmax, as it doesn't seem to do it. That does sound unnerving.
I have the 83 Honda cb1000c with the transfer case, love this old bike, super smooth and powerful.
RTV ass transmission, god Honda was going nuts in the late 70's early 80's with that stuff.

My dad bought one in 1982.. It was so smooth I fell asleep every time so the old man used a belt and strapped me to him.. riding south of Flint in Hadley hills...Good Times.
I own a 1982 model in burgundy that my father bought new in 82, I was 6 yo at the time and will never forget how big and wide it looked compared to his 73 Triumph Tiger 750, with the 4 header pipes and quad exhaust out the back it was awesome from a kids perspective, it was the first bike my dad ever took me for a ride on the street with at 6 and at 18 he let me take my motorcycle license riding test on it. My dad hurt his back in a car accident in 84 and had to have several surgeries over the following years keeping him from riding it much keeping the miles very low and of the 9,878 on the OD it I put all but about 3500 or so them and finally a few years ago my dad officially gave me both the Triumph and the CB900C citing he would just borrow it from me if ever wanted to ride, a proud but kinda sad moment. Having several other motorcycles in my stable and due to it's sentimental value to me I don't ride it all that often but it truly is on of the smoothest motorcycles I have ever ridden and as far as the dual range goes I pretty much just keep it in low range while riding it around town or in the mountains and keep it hi range when on the interstate. The video didn't go much into it but the Air ride suspension is front and rear, the forks don't take much 11-16 PSI and I don't really notice all that much of a difference however the rear is the important one with a much wider range 28 - 64 PSI depending on you weight, passenger or load, it take a little bit dialing in but once you learn what PSI you need to run mainly with a passenger it works pretty good, if the air gets to low a light will come on and let you know, even after 38 years it still holds air very well.
I freakin love my parts bin CB900Custom! It does nothing amazing like today's bikes, except, it's an amazing bike. Love it.

I had one, 82 CB900C while at Columbus AFB in Mississippi and loved it. Drove it from 85-86, and it was wonderful. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.
Pro tip: Those CB900 camshafts are a direct fit for the 79-83 CB750. A nice little performance bump.
Yes, I know. I once broke a camshaft in my 1982 CB750c and the dealer talked me into using 900 cams as a replacement. Improvement was noticeable but not considerable. That was in 1983. I haven’t head of a single mention of this since then.

I'm no english major, but I'm pretty sure any vehicle that has 4x4 with a real low range gear has a transfer case.

@@GabagoolGaming Yeah 4WD = transfer case. Anything else is just AWD. I don't care if some manufacturers use the term 4WD for marketing on their AWD vehicles.
My dad truck (which use 4x4) has three transfer case mode: RWD mode, 4 high and 4 low.
@@andrewo8987 When I talked with my dad, I use AWD term as "Automatic transfer 4WD" because AWD vehicle are so rare in Indonesia that make him not familiar with that term. Commonnly, vehicle here sold as 4x4 for old SUVs and trucks, RWD for sports cars, high end sedans, modern SUV, pickup and some vans and FWD for the rest car types.

Laughs in 1975 GL1000K0 - the biggest carbed, lumpiest cammed, naked standard (that actually weighs less than this CB900).
My Dad had one with the wind jammer. I rode it when I was 12. Was a great bike in its time. Very balanced, quick, and smooth. Plus it had a stereo cassette player which wasn't common even then. And the 4 pipes sounded specifically tuned and great sound. One of the best bikes I ever rode and it didnt leak oil like the Harleys.
Nothing beats the look and feel of a classic sport cruiser bike. Watching this review makes me miss my '82 Yamaha XJ750 Seca.

Keep going back in time with motos. So many interesting ones. My first shaft drive was a Honda GL 1000. Once u go shaft, you never go back. Currently have a 97 BMW R1100. Crank case takes 4.5 liters, gear box takes 800 mL, shaft drive takes a lttle less, 700 mL, I think. Not so bad. Easy to drain and fill. 3 different oils. Weird part is clutch assmbly is all the way at front of engine/drive train and is transverse (?) mounted. You gotta start at the back of moto and start disassembling/removing everything to get to a wear item. Will sell the bike before I replace it. I like 'interesting' bikes, but will stick with Honda the rest of the way to my grave.
I had a 86 GL 1200. As much as I miss it I was a little relieved when it got t-boned before I had to disassemble 1 billion parts to start maintenance on it

I had one of these, I loved it. It's true that it's deceptively heavy, I'd manoeuvre through city traffic easy as anything but had to be careful about leaving enough stopping distance since that rear tire wasn't really wide enough for the size. The engine does sound great, appropriately enough it's got a nice cruiserish growl at low RPMs but screams like a proper I4 superbike as soon as you put the hammer down.
I had one of these in the mid-90s. It was burgundy. I absolutely. loved it.

Bouncy bouncy bouncy. As much as I loved my old Nighthawk, the soft suspension combined with the frames on these old Hondas make for a wobbly ride over 60mph.
So you had crappy suspension. You are aware that has nothing to do with the bike itself right?

I consider myself a gearhead, and I've never heard of this bike! I'm the late 90s/early 00s, I had an '82 KZ650 CSR, and my Dad had an '82 CB650 Special. I love the old "universal Japanese motorcycles". Faster, and more reliable than the Harleys I always fawned over!
I had two of these in the mid 90's. An '81, and an '82. (Honda also made CB1000Cs with the ten speeds.) I can't say enough good things about these bikes. They had absolutely bulletproof reliability and just a real solid, but nimble handling.
I've often thought of the acceleration "delay" as the equal to a regular car's auto trans downshifting. It wasn't a delay so much, as it was a "pouncing." And for an 80's shaft drive, they were all like that. The front end didn't lift, per se. You got a more of a flat, horizontal lifting feeling during acceleration.
I just passed up an absolutely mint local one for sale for 18 Benjamins. Which was probably about half to a third of what it should have sold for.
I didn't know the ratios back then, but I'd say it was about equal to around 6.5 speeds total. Not really a sixth gear, and not quite a seventh gear.
If you find one of these, and you're able to, it'll still serve you well. Be warned though, the '81s were known to slip third gear. So you'll be shifting from 2nd to 4th. But still plenty drivable.

I had an '82 and loved it. It handled well on the Cali freeways, and was a blast running in the high desert canyons and across the Angeles Crest.
I had one . 1982 version. Built a hitch for it and towed a small 3' x 4' trailer. All my camping gear, guitar, rode it 2 up through the mountains in BC Canada. ( This was in 2006 ). Awesome bike for touring, shifted like a Mac truck. ( Yes. it took a solid 5 minutes of fiddling with the choke to get it to warm up .) Was a fun smooth solid ride, very dependable, never let me down. I did own an 1985 750cc Honda Magna, bought it with 4000k on it. Now that was a fun bike, that v4 engine was fast and smooooth. Wish I still had that one. Now I find I am wanting a T120, just wish it was shaft drive, can't stand messing with chains, oh well. I wish Honda would build me a new naked GL1000, THAT I would buy in a heartbeat.
I have a BMW R1150R. It is a naked street bike, with shaft drive, and an upright riding position. The R engines are very smooth basically bomb proof. You haven't even broken one in until you hit 20,000 miles. In the nearly 16 years and over 40,000 miles since I bought it new, the only non consumable maintenance I have done on it was a starter, an alternator, (both of which are kind of consumables in their own way) and the control cluster on the left handle bar. That is it. You might think about one given what you are looking for. It has about 80 HP and is fast enough to be fun but not crazy kill you fast. On the highway it just feels solid. It is like having a slightly beefy but athletic German girlfriend, she is healthy, hearty, can cook and is going to take care off you no matter what. You can pick one up for about $2,500. Buy one with a lot of miles on it. If the oil has been changed, they run better the more miles you put on them. And go for the 1150. The legend is that the 1150 was the last BMW built to standard without regard to price. They have less plastic and just feel more solid than the 1200s that replaced them in the mid 00s. Every time I think of replacing my bike, I decide against it because there nothing I want that it doesn't do. Just something to think about.

I'm so glad you reviewed this bike. I bought one soon after I swore off alcohol and it not only made me feel that I was hallucinating, which I didn't know you could do with the DTs which I didn't have anyway, but it caused me to stay off of motorcycles for decades! I'm going out immediately to buy something I can tear some shit up with!!!

@@MrDmitriRavenoff I mean when i see this bike on and off it really reminds me of mine, just with an overly complicated drivetrain. but min'es a 2015 865cc, last air cooled and it rips. I can concede the new ones now are liquid cooled 900's but are pretty darn quick too.
Well, over the years, the Bonnie kind of migrated to a sort of "new" category market likes to call "retro" or "vintage style". And there are a lot of brands that have picked up on this trend, see Kawasaki Z900RS or even more recent Husqvarna 701 Svartpillen. Nostalgia just sells better.
Not really the same thing. This is longer, heavier, and raked out in the front compared to a modern Bonnie. It's actually closer to the Triumph Speedmaster than the regular Bonnie, but faster and revvier.
The regular Bonnie's counterpart would've been something like a smaller CB with a twin, like a CB500T.
Kenny CB1100: Am I a joke to you?
That was an awesome bike. I had one new and it was a great cruiser. It was not a crotch rocket. They were a beautiful piece of work.
We replaced the stick clutch with a Barrett’s Kevlar Clutch. We put headers, rebuilt the carbs, brakes, ect just started in the front end and worked our way back ! It turns on hard and instantly nearly. For a heavy old bike it preforms now much brand revs instantly. Replaced all shock seals , the bike rides like a boat going through waves on the water . No bam, bam, bam when hitting pot holes very nice for my back . The best part the bike is it’s a Honda and dependable ! We are happy with the way it turned out.

Bought a maroon 1982 cb900c in June 1982 off the showroom floor. The bike was ahead of it's time. Many features were rare in the day. Triple disc brakes, dual horns, oil cooler, shaft drive, halogen headlamp, and, of course, the two speed sub transmission. The engine is from a cb900f cafe racer and the drive shaft is from the Honda Gold Wing. I do shift it like a six speed, but keep it in high range until I come to a stop. I have no trouble shifting the hi-lo shifter. Use your heel to shift up. It is synchronized, so don't rush it. Sometimes it may take a second to go in. Downshifting is with the toe. If you keep the revs up a bit, this thing flies. To blow by someone, I just leave it in high range and downshift to first gear. It takes off like a rocket. It handles like a dream. I keep the air shocks close to max pressure and the bike is very nimble. The bike sat for 13 years as I was raising kids, but I had airplane gas in it (I used to fly). When I went to start it it fired right up. I road it for a while and then bought a 2014 Harley Ultra Classic in June 2014: exactly 32 years to the hour after buying my Honda. The, now ex, wife like the big seat and wrap around backrest of the Harley and I like having the fairing and windshield, but the Honda is much more fun to ride and handles a lot better. Unfortunately, it's been sitting for a few years with auto gas in it, so I will probably have to rebuild carbs, but I look forward to putting it on the road again. I've had it almost 41 years now and can't part with it. Someday, when I'm gone, the kids can do what they want with it.
2-Speed transfer case? you mean 5 overdrive gears? :P
That's kind-of what I was thinking, too. Seems more like a secondary overdrive to me than a transfer case.

I have no idea about what was explained and didn't understand it. Yet, I found the vid so comforting
I owned both the 750 and 900 versions of this bike. Even down to the colors. The 900 did feel noticeably strong at all speeds despite its weight. But also handled and braked much heavier. The 900 was also much smoother. But… the 750 being lighter felt much more nimble to ride and much simpler mechanically. It really depended own how you want to ride. I loved my 750 the whole time I had it. Then test road the 900. I loved the 900, but didn’t love my 750 any less. Long rides the 900 was best of the two. Honda street bikes were simply the best.
Listing all the cons, this sounds awfully like a Harley
Ride a Road Glide or a Dyna and you will "get" Harley. Not saying you will want to buy one, but you will understand. And I mean a Dyna before they were all Softail's.

Too bad the weather is going to start getting cold soon. Watching these makes me want to take my motorcycle out and just ride.
I have one of these; a 1981 model in root beer brown metallic. Scooped it up from a friend of a friend for $600 a few years ago. I didn't know it used to be my grandfather's bike until I brought it home and my Dad recognized it. After two owners and 15 years, it came back to the garage. Never really appreciated its weirdness or how well it handled until someone else pointed it out.
Side note: If the rear brake caliper ever gives up, one from a GL1500 will fit, work great, and cost less than rebuilding the original brake caliper.
I had an '81 and it was just beautiful. When I'd stop at a cafe on a weekend drive, I"d park among all the Harleys and every other snazzy bike. EVERYONE would want to know about my Honda. I drove it 92,000 miles and only did regular maintenence. I miss that bike. 45-48 mpg ... smooth ... comfortable. It was a great bike.
Once again Mr. Regular gets a Koolness factor for digging bikes too. Ride on, my friends.
