Hey Brodie, I recently learned about a college in my state where one of the majors is broadcasting, and I enjoy watching NASCAR, so I could do that, but I also enjoy doing theatre. However, I only started doing theatre last year, so I don't know if I should do an acting career or a career at NASCAR as one of the commentators during the races.

Johnny Bench is my all time favorite player and I ran into him when I was grown up and was a Jerk to me.

Hey Brodie, I’ve got a fellow reporter in our news room right now who is reporting news but really wants to do sports instead. What would be some advice you would give to him? I’ve suggested finding some minor league teams to do some part time work with. But he seems to really just want to make a jump from small market news to national sports media. I tell him that’s unreasonable and wonder if it truly is hard to do a move like that. Any advice would help.

hey kyle: i think you're pretty accurate with the best advice. it does happen where sometimes, folks catch a lucky break and make an instant leap with little previous experience... but... the most prudent advice is to start somewhere that gives him a lot of repetition/experience. also: start a sports youtube channel... will give more of a platform to get better at the craft, and then showcase work to others!

Hi Brodie. As someone who is just beginning their journey into sports media, more specifically, pursuing a broadcaster/play-by-play career, do you feel a college degree is necessary for a broadcasting career? Currently, I am working with a small local network in Texas. I’ve been gaining experience and am working to be a professional broadcaster. I be receiving my associates degree in communications soon but, is pursuing and spending the money on a bachelors degree in a sports media major needed for the career and to get job(s). Or would it be better to keep getting reps with the network I work for and use my experience to promote myself when trying to get a professional job.

hi noah, a degree is pretty mandatory. but anything after that may not be necessary depending on the exact kind of work you are after. in broadcasting, typically, real-life experience is far more valued than diplomas.
